1. Introduction :
1) Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Inha University was established in December, 1971. The Master and
the Doctoral Program were inaugurated in January, 1976 and February, 1978, respectively. The purpose of
education in the Department of Chemistry is to provide mastery of chemistry as well as basic knowledge
in various branches of Chemistry. The department was recognized as one of the top ten Chemistry
Departments in Korea by the Korea Council on University Education in 1993, and was ranked 4th in the
national evaluation of the Chemistry Departments performed by Joongang Daily in 1996. In 2006, the
Graduate program of the department was selected as one of the top seven Brain Korea (BK) 21 Research
Centers for its excellence in research and education. This clearly indicates that this department is a top
level highly research-oriented chemistry department in Korea.
The Department of Chemistry presently has 18 faculty members, all of whom participate in the
graduate educational program and active research programs. The program of teaching and research spans
the whole spectrum of Chemistry. General areas covered include physical chemistry, organic chemistry,
inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry and biological chemistry. The Department of Chemistry has
launched three top-class research centers; supported by various Korean Governmental Agencies. They are
Brain Korea (BK) 21 Research Center, the High Energy Material Research Center and the Nano Center
for Fine Chemical Fusion Technology.
Graduates from the Department of Chemistry, can take carrier routes which include entering graduate
Chemical Engineering - 1
school, teaching after taking education courses, entering private enterprises such as Samsung
Semiconductor, LG Display, several other prominent petroleum companies, and entering national research
institutes such as the Korea Institute of Sciences and Technology or the Korea Research Institute of
Chemical Technology. Students may also choose careers in medical institutes, Korea Food and Drug
Administration, pharmaceutical companies, or cosmetic companies.
2)
Chemical Engineering
The Department of Chemical Engineering provides varied educational and training
courses to cultivate the best domestic chemical engineers who can contribute to their
society and nation with professional knowledge and conduct.
The Department of Chemical Engineering began as one of six original departments
in INHA Institute of Technology in 1954, and then was reorganized into a chemical
engineering major in the school of chemical engineering in 1996. The Department of
chemical engineering established an M.S. program in 1958 and a Ph.D. program in 1970.
