RARE BOOK CONDITION & PROPOSED TREATMENT SUMMARY
Date: 10/10/2006
Conservator: Metzger/Baker
Title: Gothic Ornaments in York Minster
Imprint: 1831
Dimensions (H x W x Th): 34 x 29 x 4 cm
CONDITION SUMMARY
The book is a half style binding covered in thick calf leather and blue marbled paper with
gold and blind tooling on the front cover and spine. The textblock is in good condition
overall. The book contains 105 plates. The printers ink from the plate images has offset.
One endband has become detached at the spine lining, but holds on to the textblock by a
thread. The spine is detached at the back hinge, remaining attached fully at the front
hinge, and there are two main tears in the spine leather. The back board attachment has
weekend and the cord sewing supports are slightly visible.
PROPOSED TREATMENT SUMMARY
Consolidate the two tears on the leather spine with wheat starch paste. Reattach endband
to the spine with long fiber paper. Rebuild half of a hollow tube with long fiber paper.
Lift the leather on the back about 2 cm onto the board at the spine. Dye long fiber tissue
to match the deteriorated leather color. Firm up the back board attachment with a long
fiber paper hinge. Adhere the consolidated spine to the new hollow tube with wheat
starch paste.
