Small Business Teams Up With Local Non-Profit Organization
To Debut Composting Program
Waste Less Living, Inc.—a local environmental company specializing in zero waste consulting and
composting services—just recently launched an alternative waste management plan at FLINTRIDGE
CENTER in Pasadena. The Flintridge Center is well known for its community programs in Northwest
Pasadena and Altadena, such as the Mustangs on the Move after-school program, Apprenticeship
Preparation classes and educational services for nonprofit organizations. Realizing that Flintridge Center
could implement more sustainable practices at its office, Jaylene Moseley, the president called upon the
Founder/President of Waste Less Living, Christine Lenches-Hinkel, for assistance. By embracing the
concept of composting to manage its waste stream, Flintridge Center is on target with making a positive
and beneficial impact on the environment.
“With just a little effort, each of us can play a part in helping the earth,” Moseley states. “Our country
currently generates the most waste per capita in the world, and this impacts the health and quality of our
environment. But by educating ourselves and adjusting our practices, we can reduce the amount of trash
that ends up in our landfills. Christine is helping the Flintridge Team do just that.”
Having utilized Waste Less Living’s services for several of its community functions outside the office,
Moseley envisioned bringing the practice of composting and organics waste management to Flintridge
Center on a daily basis…..as this form of waste management is considered the most sustainable waste
management option. Although this system is currently being implemented at a local school in Pasadena,
High Point Academy, Flintridge Center will be the first nonprofit organization and office in
Pasadena to adopt the Waste Less Living program whereby all staff will source separate the waste
they discard into one of three bins…one for trash, recyclables and compostable (organic) materials. All
organic waste captured will be measured and documented prior to disposal at a commercial composting
facility. Waste Less Living will track and report all data back to Flintridge Center. To date, Flintridge
Center has diverted a total of 177.2 lbs. from utilizing Waste Less Living’s eco-planning services.
On January 4, 2011, Waste Less Living completed the first of two scheduled staff training workshops to
introduce staff members to the proposed new system. A second workshop is scheduled for Monday,
January 10 to train staff on sustainable purchasing options and how to identify the waste products for
proper disposal in the waste sorting stations that have been put in place. Waste Less Living will be
responsible for ensuring that all the organic waste separated actually gets composted on a weekly basis.
The Flintridge Center plans to achieve an 80% waste diversion rate.
On May 25, 2010, CA State Sen. Carol Liu honored Ms. Lenches-Hinkel, with the “Salute to Small
Business” award.
