Career planning is a developmental process and must be fostered during the entire period of a student's academic experience. To succeed with your career plans, there must be an on-going plan of action leading to the realization of your career goals. This process involves a periodic assessment of self as you climb the career ladder of success. This self-assessment is matched with the other essentials of career planning and preparation that include academic preparation, occupational exploration, self-concept development, experiential learning, and employability skills. These ingredients of career development contribute significantly to one's successful entry into a chosen profession upon graduation. To increase your chances of landing that perfect job upon graduation or attending the graduate school of your Page 1 of 4 All students should visit the CSC at least once per semester, as new internships, job postings, and other publications are received on a weekly basis. Freshmen should register with the CSC as soon as possible to: o Identify occupations specific to your major. o Begin developing your resume/portfolio. o Research scholarships, and other programs specific to freshman. o Research companies where you may want to do an internship. Sophomores and Juniors are encouraged to visit the CSC to: o Update resumes/portfolios o Begin the application process for internships (Internships can be done during summer breaks as well as during the fall/spring semesters). o Identify Career and Graduate School Fairs. Seniors are encouraged to visit the CSC to: o Firm up their resumes. o Gather information on interviewing skills, office etiquette, dressing for success, etc… o Identify Career and Graduate School Fairs. o Research and apply to companies for employment. The CSC resource room is equipped with computers that have Internet access and a work area. The Center also has a host of reference materials and books to do job and graduate school research. Individual counseling is by appointment, and students are encouraged to stop by or call 434848-6447. Joyner Ms. Joyner is the new Administrative Assistant for the Career Services Center. Ms. Joyner is a 2004 graduate of Saint Paul’s College and she is very excited about working with the students here at Saint Paul’s. Please stop by and say hello. On Tuesday, October 19, 2004 students traveled to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia to attend the Diversity Career Day. This career fair is an annual event that brings minority students from across the state to meet with employers interested in diversifying their workforce. There were 126 employers present and over 21 colleges and universities visited the event. Some of the agencies and companies represented were IRS, CIA, FBI, DIA, US Department of State, Tyco International (US) Inc., Rubbermaid, Kroger’s, Target, Ernst & Young, ING, UBS, NSA, Social Security Administration, Walgreen’s, Wal-Mart, Government Executive, The Brattle Group, and Countrywide Financial Corporation. Exploration Summer Page 2 of 4 The Tiger Report SAINT PAUL’S COLLEGE Career Services Center Volume 1 Issue 1 December, 2004 Programs nterviewed Brandon Kimble on the spot; Michael Ortiz was scheduled for an interview on the following day with the Social Security Administration for their Executive Management Program. Ohio State University’s 34th Annual Graduate and Professional Schools Visitation Days registered, given an opportunity to network, and then taken to a fine dining hall on campus that was located next to a historic Cathedral. The bells of the Cathedral rang as if to welcome us to Ohio State. After a wonderful dinner, the students were bused to a student union building where a 300member Gospel choir serenaded them. The choir stood in front of us, and on both sides of us. It was as if they had put their arms around us and sang the most beautiful music. On the next day the students were given an opportunity to visit their schools of interest. 58th Annual US Wildlife & Fisheries Conference Hilton Head, SC Pictured above: Femi Banjo, Alethia Coles, Michelle Cooke, Joyce Forlemu, Michael Ortiz, and Vidhya Sivakumaran SPC Students Diana Che and Tina Jolley Board plane to attend conference On Saturday, October 30th six SPC Students traveled twelve hours to Ohio State University to attend the 34th Annual Graduate and Professional Schools Visitation Days. This special honor is extended to high achieving students attending historically black colleges and universities through out the country. OSU's Office of Minority Affairs hosted these students in grand style. The students were housed two to a room in a beautiful University hotel. On Sunday the students were Two SPC students attended the 58th Annual US Wildlife & Fisheries Conference in Hilton Head, SC on October 31st through November 3rd. Both students indicated that they learned a lot about careers in forestry and marine life. Virginia High-Tech Partnership On Thursday, October 21st Mr. Scott Price, Executive Director of Governor Warner’s Virginia High-Tech Partnership Program visited Saint Paul’s campus to meet with four SPC students who were hand picked to participate in this mentorship program. Clear your schedule for the entire day. 2. Dress as you would for an interview. 3. Bring a pen and paper for note taking 4. Carry a supply of professional printed résumés proportionate to the number of employers you hope to meet. 5. Carry your belongings in a professional business satchel, which is polished and well organized. 6. Review the Career Fair website or newspaper advertisement and plan ahead which employer’s booth you want to see. 7. Open your mind to consider employers beyond your current ideas. 8. Rehearse a 30-second introduction of yourself, your accomplishments and your objectives. 9. Be considerate of recruiters’ time. After asking your questions, make arrangements for future contacts. 10. Thank the recruiter and ask for a business card, so you may send a follow-up letter. 11. Jot down notes after each interview or meeting to avoid confusing your conversations later. 12. Take time to talk to fellow attendees, if possible. Often peers can offer you valuable insight based on their search and employment experience. Page 4 of 4
