Other Culture Group Assignment- Worth 100 Points Total
Purpose
This assignment will require you to study a culture that is different than your own. Please
choose culture or subculture that the majority of the class is not familiar with, or at least does not
have a direct connection to. If you are having problems, come and see me. I need to approve
all cultures to make sure that there are no duplicates, and to help guide you on the particular
aspects of this culture you will be focusing on. Each group will submit a one-page proposal for
this assignment.
You should have at least four sources. These may include (but not limited to) the Internet,
magazines, newspapers, books, library sources such as Info Track, Lexus Nexus, etc. I would
strongly suggest that you include at least one interview of a person or people from this particular
culture.
You will submit a one page proposal detailing what your group will present. In three to five
sentences give me a general idea of the culture you will present, and why you think it is
important or interesting to the class. After the paragraph please list, in bullet form, what each
family member will be responsible for including sub topic, as well as preparation duties. Check
the syllabus for the due date.
Presentation
Each group will present a 20 - 30 minute presentation. You will detail three to six different
aspects of this culture including a cultural issue. You should turn in one speech outline for your
group and should include visual aids in your presentation. You should have the same outline in
front of you that I have in front of me. Your presentation should consist of 10 –15 minutes of
oral presentation (two to three minutes per person), and about five to seven minutes for some
kind of activity (game, discussion, food, music, etc.) that will reinforce our understanding of this
culture. Make sure you have an introduction and a conclusion to your presentation, and make
sure that there is a clear distinction between your speech and your activity. Make it interesting,
educational, and fun.
Cultural Issue
Every culture has issues, goals, or conflicts. In addition to simply informing us about a culture,
you should include a cultural issue and discuss the ramifications of this to its people.
Topics
The following are some topics you may want to consider including. This is not a complete list by
any means, and you don’t need to include all of these: Dating and marriage customs, family
roles, language / terms / expressions, Gender roles, Nonverbal Communication, customs &
traditions, rules for emotional expression, costume / clothing, stereotypes about this group,
music / dance, foods, significance of time, use of space, entertainment, etc.
Grading
Group members can file a grade complaint based on group plan. If a member of group did not
fulfill their assigned duties an anonymous report can be used to deduct points from that
individuals group culture group grade.
