Issues for
AAPM:
Resolutions discussed at the Medical Physics caucus include the
following (full text of resolutions is available on the ACR website):
 ACR–AAPM Technical Standard for Medical Nuclear Physics
Performance Monitoring of Gamma Cameras - Adopted
 ACR–AAPM Practice Guideline on the Expert Witness in
Medical Physics (NEW) - Adopted
 ACR–AAPM Technical Standard for Management of the Use
of Radiation in Fluoroscopic Procedures- Adopted
 ACR–AAPM Technical Standard for Medical Physics
Performance Monitoring of PET/CT Imaging Equipment Adopted, with amendments
 ACR–AAPM Technical Standard for the Performance of
Proton Beam Radiation Therapy (NEW) - Adopted, with
amendments
 ACR–AAPM Practice Guideline for Diagnostic Reference
Levels and Achievable Doses in Medical X-Ray ImagingAdopted
 ACR–SPR Practice Guideline for Imaging Pregnant or
Potentially Pregnant Adolescents and Women with Ionizing
Radiation- Adopted
 Radiation Safety Language in Practice Guidelines- Adopted
 Electronic Health Record Interoperability – Adopted
 Radiation Safety Language in Practice Guidelines: This is
standard text to include in all applicable practice guidelines
involving ionizing radiation. It clarifies that ALARA applies to
staff and public only and not patients. It was noted that medical
physicists should be alert to policy and similar statements made by
various medical organizations, CRCPD and regulatory agencies to
ensure that the term is applied properly.
 ACR–AAPM Technical Standard for the Performance of Proton
Beam Radiation Therapy: Dr Phillip Devlin joined the Medical
Physics Caucus and proposed edits to the Introduction section the
removed statements that proton therapy was superior to photon
therapy. These edits were suggested by ASTRO and included in
the clinical guideline on proton therapy. The Caucus was in
agreement..
 The Caucus discussed the need for ACR to produce a statement
regarding predictions of induced cancers and cancer deaths in a
population of patients exposed to low doses (<100 mSv) of
ionizing radiation during medical imaging procedures. Members
also expressed a need for a statement on requirements for dose
recording in the medical record and limits of patient radiation
exposures. Further discussion with the Medical Physics
Commission on the topic, along with possible collaboration with
AAPM, is planned.
 The Electronic Health Record Interoperability resolution was a late
Budget
Request ($):
resolution introduced by CA due to recent requirements in their
state. IHE and DICOM already have committees in place to
address these concerns. AAPM members of these committees
could also assist CA in this matter.
