The Subject and the Predicate
Every sentence is made up of two basic parts: the subject and the predicate. The subject of a
sentence tells who or what did something, or what the sentence is about. The predicate of a
sentence tells what the subject does or what happens to him/her/it.

Identifying subjects and Predicates: Draw a vertical line between the subject and predicate in
each of the following sentences.

Simple Subjects and Verbs
In every sentence a few words are more important than others. These key words are the
basic framework of the sentence.

All words in the subject part of the sentence are called the complete subject. Within the
complete subject is a key word, the simple subject.
The complete predicate is all the words that tell something about the subject. The key word
within the complete predicate is the simple predicate or verb.
To find the subject, first identify the verb. It shows action or state of being. Then form a
question by placing, who or what before the verb. The answer will be the subject.
My sister changed the fuse

Identify verbs and Simple Subjects. In each sentence, underline the verb twice and its
subject once.
