The extent of my teaching activities include didactic lectures to cardiology fellows
and residents, case-based discussion in the Catheterization Laboratory, and
conference discussion in CCU, Catheterization, and Journal Club conferences.
I spend a significant proportion of my time in the catheterization laboratory where I

indications, contraindications, and complications of cardiac catheterization and
percutaneous coronary interventions. I have mentored several fellows in the writing

1. Health Bridges Project (Proyecto Puentes de Salud).
This is a community service / research project initiated in 2006 to study the prevalence
of cardiovascular risk factors in a rural Mexican population. Selected first-year medical
students spent 6-8 in the town of Juventino Rosas, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.
A total of 13 students participated in this project. During their time in Mexico, the
students carried out a number of health fairs in small rural communities and collected
information on cardiovascular risk factors, health behaviors, socioeconomic factors,
and assessed for depression. Patients with a new diagnosis of a chronic condition (i.e.:

diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia) were referred to a local health provider
for follow up. Research activities included data collection, data analysis, presentations
at state, national, and international meetings, and manuscript preparation. The research
component of the study was approved by the IRB at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. My role in the project was to serve as faculty advisor and research mentor
for the students that participated in the years 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Director, Latino Healthy Heart Initiative – UNC Division of Cardiology
The mission of the LatinoHealthy Heart Initiative is to improve the quality of life for
Latinos living in the communities served by UNC Heart Center by:
1. Increasing the community’s awareness of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors by
demonstrating ways to adopt healthy lifestyle changes.
2. Improving access for Latino patients to specialized cardiac services and treatments
offered by the UNC Heart Center.
3. Strengthening and developing new partnerships within our local community with
Latino health care providers, and religious and community leaders.
This mission is accomplished by working directly with local healthcare providers,
community organizations, and religious and business leaders to develop culturally sensitive
education materials in Spanish, and provide health screenings at local health fairs. This
Initiative is funded by the Strowd-Roses Foundation and the UNC Division of Cardiology.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Annual Latino Health Fair – Member of the Organizing
Committee
This is an annual event coordinated in collaboration with Piedmont Health Services,
Orange County Health Department, and the St. Thomas More School. The UNC Latino
Healthy Heart Initiative has participated in the 2003 and 2004 fairs. In 2005, the Initiative
assumed a leadership role providing cholesterol and glucose screenings and counseling for
the first time in a Hispanic health fair in Chapel Hill. In addition, the Initiative was
responsible for TV publicity, a key factor that made the 2005 event the best attended ever
with more than 300 participants.
