Steven Patterson: My name’s Steven Patterson. I’m the CEO and we manufacture artist paints.
[Images flash through artist using paintbrush, jars of paint, factory worker, factory machinery, paint
pouring out of machine, paint being mixed]
It is a family business. It was started by my father and his business partner over 50 years ago. So
when the company first started 50 years ago like most companies there was only a few people, the
waste was just washed down the sewer and the rest of the stuff ended up in the bin. So yeah it has
come a long way.

The Bin Trim program I think is really good because it’s made us actually take a look at what we’ve
done.
[Images flash through factory workers packaging paints, packaged paint tubes]
So during the Bin Trim program we identified a piece of packaging that we use that by changing it
around and actually using a different one that used less plastic we ended up with over a year we
should save about three and a half tonnes of plastic.
And also about $50,000 by using these lighter weight plastic containers.

During the Bin Trim program we worked out that we also needed to have the paper bin emptied
more often.

So we were getting it done every two weeks, we brought it back to one week and we found that it
was filling up every week but the good thing was that was going to recycling whereas that had been
going to hard rubbish.
[Images flash through empty cardboard boxes, factory workers recycling cardboard]
And it was something like 16 tonne a year that we saved that wasn’t going to hard rubbish, that was
going to recycling.
[Image shows Eliza McInnes, Derivan Product Manager Coordinator]
Eliza McInnes: We have a lot of cardboard. We have a lot of packaging. And we need to make sure
that that doesn’t end up in general waste.
[Images flash through factory workers recycling cardboard, factory worker driving forklift carrying
cardboard]
We as a company that recycles our boxes so any boxes that we have deemed that they can use we
transport to them. We get a financial benefit but we also benefit from the fact that it’s not being
put into landfill.

What was great about working on this program was working with the assessor and them providing
you with an action plan.
[Images flash through document titled Action Plan with Bin Trim logo, Eliza McInnes talking to

And I was just looking at it today and what was really nice about it is it just gave you the jobs to do
and then you did them. And it also gave you graphs showing you where your waste was going and
what could be improved.
But what was really fun was when I looked at this and the list it was like done, done, done, done,
done (laughs).
[Images flash through factory worker driving forklift loaded with cardboard, Steven Patterson, Eliza
McInnes talking to factory worker]
Steven Patterson: I think it’s very important that all business, at home, at work, everywhere, we’ve
got to get in to recycling, reducing, reusing, recycling, all the way through.
