CALL TO ORDER AND OPENING PRAYER
The Moderator, Rev. Diane Givens-Moffett, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. and delivered the
opening prayer.
QUORUM
The Stated Clerk declared a quorum was present for conducting the business of Presbytery.
APPROVAL OF DOCKET
The docket was presented by the Moderator of Salem Presbytery, Rev. Diane Givens-Moffett.
ACTION:
1. Presbytery approved the docket. (Appendix A).

CONSENT AGENDA
ACTION:
2. Salem Presbytery approved the Consent Agenda which consisted of two items on the Committee on
Ministry report, one item from the Stated Clerk’s Report, and the Nominating Committee report. (Appendix
B).
WELCOME FROM HOST CHURCH
The governing body was welcomed by Rev. Jay Smith, Pastor, Jamestown Presbyterian Church,
Jamestown, North Carolina. Information regarding the arrangements for this meeting was presented.
WELCOME FROM THE MODERATOR
The Moderator, Diane Givens-Moffett, welcomed the body of Salem Presbytery and encouraged all
members of Salem Presbytery to listen for the spirit of God.
INTRODUCTIONS
Corresponding Members and Elders attending Presbytery for the first time were recognized and
welcomed by the Moderator. The Moderator then turned the meeting over to the Reverend Jay Smith to
lead in the morning worship.

MORNING WORSHIP AND CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
Rev. Jay Smith, pastor of Jamestown Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, preached a sermon, “Atrophy to
Apathy”, using the text from Revelation 3: 15-22; Romans 12: 9-21.The Lord’s Supper was celebrated
following his message.
GREETINGS FROM SALEM PRESBYTERY STAFF
Executive Presbyter, Sam Marshall and Hispanic Mission Evangelist, Alfredo Miranda brought greetings,
welcome and announcements to Salem Presbytery. Renee Carter, financial secretary for Salem
Presbytery, was introduced. Alfredo Miranda showed highlights of youth from El Buen Pastor attending
summer camp in New York.

STATED CLERK’S REPORT
Elder Mack Dagenhart, Stated Clerk
The Stated Clerk, Mack Dagenhart, advised Salem Presbytery on the process for nomination of
commissioners for the 222nd General Assembly. Nominations are due in the Presbytery office by
September 30.

PREPARATION FOR MINISTRY

Joshua Cody Stanley shared his faith journey and was examined by Salem Presbytery in order to be
considered for candidacy in the Presbyterian Church, USA.
ACTION:
3. Salem Presbytery enrolled Joshua Cody Stanley, a member at First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro,
attending Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, as a Candidate for the Ministry of Word
and Sacrament as a Teaching Elder following his successful examination.

SECURING AN INTERIM PASTOR
1. Concurred with the Session of First Presbyterian Church, Thomasville, North Carolina, in securing
the Reverend Jennie Hemrick to serve as Interim Pastor for a period of one year, beginning August
1, 2015.
B. RENEWING A CONTRACT WITH AN INTERIM PASTOR
1. Concurred with the Session of the First Presbyterian Church, Kernersville, North Carolina in
renewing the Interim Pastor contract with the Reverend Thomas Brent Burleson for a period of
twelve months beginning July 6, 2015.

SECURING A TEMPORARY SUPPLY
1. Concurred with the Session of the Thyatira Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, North Carolina in
securing the Reverend John Milholland to serve as Temporary Supply for a period of twelve months

Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, North Carolina, effective May 31, 2015.

1. Concurred with the Session of the El Bethel Presbyterian Church, Eden, North Carolina, in
renewing the contract of Mr. Francis Young to serve as their Commissioned Ruling Elder–Lay Pastor
for a period of one year beginning January 1, 2015.
2. Concurred with the Session of the Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church, Glendale Springs, North
Carolina, in renewing the contract of Mr. Sid Crunk to serve as their Commissioned Ruling Elder-Lay

F. PERMISSION TO ADMINISTER THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
1. That Elder Beth Utley be allowed to administer the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on August 2,
2015 at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in the absence of the Reverend Joe Blankinship.

4. That the call of the First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, North Carolina to the Reverend Lindsay
Conrad to serve as Associate Pastor was found in order; and the terms of call (printed below) were
approved; and the call was placed in her hands. The Committee on Ministry is satisfied that this
congregation has complied with the EEO provisions of the Book of Order (G. 2.0804) and the AAEEO
Policy adopted by Salem Presbytery (July 1993) in offering this call. The effective date is May 24, 2015.

8. Martha Gentry was approved to be commissioned as the Commissioned Ruling Elder-Lay Pastor of
the Lansing Presbyterian Church, Lansing, North Carolina, for a six month period beginning July 1,
2015, and that she was granted permission to celebrate the Sacraments and Moderate the Session.
Further that an Administrative Commission comprised of the Reverend Will Heyward, Elder Bob
Beeson, and Elder Carolyn Mock will hold a service of Commissioning on behalf of Salem Presbytery
because family circumstances prevent Martha from attending a Presbytery meeting.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD
Hunger Action Advocate, Rev. Bryan McFarland, introduced Nancy Rhodes, Vice-President of Finance
and Administration at Bread for the World. Ms. Rhodes gave a moving talk about the work and
importance of Bread for the World and led Salem Presbytery in an offering of letters. The offering for
Pennies for Hunger was also received.
LUNCH ADJOURNMENT
Directions for lunch plans and a blessing of thanksgiving were given by Rev. Newton Cowan. Salem
Presbytery was dismissed for lunch.

PRAYERS FOR INTERCESSION AND THANKSGIVING
The Moderator, Rev. Diane Givens-Moffett reconvened Salem Presbytery after lunch and led Salem
Presbytery in prayers for intercession and thanksgiving.

Hopeful Church, on September 12.

The Council of Salem Presbytery met on May 21, June 18, and July 16, 2015.
For Information:

Council endorsed the recommendation of the administrative commission for Prospect Church to
dismiss the PNC.

Endorsed the El Buen application for $15,000 from Church Growth to help support a Youth
Director and the application for $18,000 from GA to establish a wellness center.
Heard about a pilot program funded by the Lilly Foundation to educate pastors and congregations
in matters relating to financial literacy. Salem Presbytery has been selected to participate.
Approved ordination exam readers for the August and November cycles:

11. Salem Presbytery elected Elder David Vaughan as Stated Clerk for a three year term.

benediction and the closing prayer. Salem Presbytery was dismissed to a reception honoring retiring
Stated Clerk, Mack Dagenhart.
