Ashoka frequently has a general need for translations to and from English in a variety of
languages. The most requested languages are Spanish; Portuguese; French; German;
Arabic; Thai; and Indonesian, but it is helpful to have experienced translators on call for
any language.

Translate the Volunteer Newsletter from English to Spanish

The Volunteer Newsletter has a global subscription base of over 1000 potential
volunteers who are interested in helping Ashoka Fellows and staff accomplish systemic
social change around the world. Help expand the readership of this bimonthly
publication, which varies in length between 20-30 pages, by translating it from English to
Spanish.

Translate the Ashoka Welcome Packet
Virtual
The Ashoka Global Fellowship Team has recently revised its Welcome Packet,
introductory material orienting new Fellows to Ashoka. The team is looking for
volunteers to help translate the packet into a number of languages so it can be easily
read by Fellows from around the world. The packet is 56 pages of general information,
not very dense but with some terminology particular to Ashoka. If you are extremely
proficient at translating from English to Thai, Indonesian, Polish, German or Arabic and
would like to help with a section or more of the packet, please send a description of your
experience and the time you have available to devote to the project. We will then
provide you with a sample page so you can get a better feel for the material.

Translate Ashoka’s “Fellowship Express” from English to Spanish

The “Fellowship Express” is a quarterly publication with global electronic distribution to
over 1700 Ashoka Fellows around the world. It highlights new Fellowship programs
along with collaborations and exchanges this international community of Fellows
undertake to further their work across countries and regions of the world. Each quarterly
Express is between 7-10 pages in a newsletter format. The next edition will be
published in July, 2007.

The Association of Parents and Friends of Special People (AAPPE), led by Irae Cardoso
(Ashoka Fellow, Brazil), is an organization that works with the deaf and special needs
communities in the state of Alagoas, in the northeast area of Brazil. AAPPE is looking
for a volunteer to help translate organizational materials into English for a partnership
with an institution for deaf children in England and for general international use. They
also need translation of documents from English into Portuguese.

Translate, Proofread, Narrate Stories for Literacy Project

Dr. Brij Kothari (Ashoka Fellow, India) promotes literacy in novel ways through his
organization, PlanetRead (www.PlanetRead.org). One is BookBox, a social enterprise
which is a web-based jukebox of digital books in over 24 languages (including 10 Indian
languages). BookBox’s strategy is the proven approach of Same Language Subtitling
(SLS) pioneered by Planet Read. BookBox grew out of a business plan competition at
Stanford University, which PlanetRead won. It contains a feature called
“AddMyLanguage” through which people from any part of the world can add their
languages to the stories. It has generated enormous enthusiastic response.
Dr. Kothari is looking for language experts who can proofread, translate and narrate the
stories. He needs expertise in Kiswahili, Thai, Kurdish, Finnish and Swedish. The most
urgent and current need is for Kiswahili. Volunteers must have excellent language
command and should be able to work quickly through email and from home. An ability
to narrate stories from home is a plus. A long term relationship is desired. For every
story they help to launch, volunteers will receive a one-time credit of 6 USD to purchase

Help Prepare Internet Launch for Youth Venture in Germany

The German Youth Venture team is currently piloting the youth initiative of Ashoka to

who can program HTML, use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, and who

Survey Indian Fellows on New Tools to Focus and Expand Their Programs
New Delhi, India or Virtual
Explore Fellow interest in sharing, learning about and adopting social and environmental
impact measurements tools. This would involve:



Researching existing impact measurement tools internationally to see which
ones would be best suited to Fellows’ situational needs.
Identifying which Fellows would like to advance to their next level of growth
through training and mentoring on finances, linkages, impact measurement tools
and growth plans.
Identifying Fellows who wish to receive training on Adaptive Blueprinting
Methodology that will allow for wider dissemination of their ideas, smarter
collaboration and community-building.
The timeline for these projects is 3-5 months and work will be based in the New Delhi
office. A small stipend of around Rs.4000 a month may be available. Virtual, off-site
assistance would also be helpful. Volunteers should have 3-4 years work experience, a
strong understanding of the needs of the citizen sector, be conversant with social impact
measurement concepts and tools, be a team player, and be comfortable with the Indian
experience. Good research, analytical and quantitative skills, along with good listening
and people skills, are important.

Organize Global Contacts for Full Economic Citizenship Initiative

The Full Economic Citizenship (FEC) initiative aims to create inclusive economies in
which every individual has the ability and choice to actively participate in the local and
global economies as producers, consumers, and wealth creators. FEC brings together
businesses and citizen organizations in partnerships that can help each increase their
social impact.
FEC is looking for a Contact and Relationship Management volunteer to assist with the
consolidation and organization of their rapidly expanding global resources and contacts.
This would involve communicating internationally, updating contact information, assisting
with the consolidation of country teams’ contacts, and managing other tasks that arise.
They are looking for a volunteer with strong organizational and computer skills
(experience with Excel is necessary; experience with databases preferred). The
volunteer would be needed one to two days per week throughout the summer, generally
in Arlington (but virtual work may be possible from time to time).

Design Communication Materials and Website for Global Initiative

Ashoka global initiative, Full Economic Citizenship, works within business/social
collaborations to create economic and social value to all partners while providing critical
products and services to low-income communities.
They are looking for an expert in design, marketing and communications to create
publishable communication materials that can be delivered within a negotiable
timeframe. They also would like a volunteer experienced in web design to create a new
website for this initiative. If offering virtual help, the volunteer should be near the
Arlington office for periodic meetings and consultations.

Youth Venture

Youth Venture, an Ashoka partner organization, invests in the ideas and capacity of
young people ages 12-20 so that they can create, launch, and lead their own social
ventures as sustainable community-benefiting organizations, clubs and businesses.

Venture is looking for on-site and virtual volunteers for the following positions and
programs:
1. “Young Venturer” Connection/Development Specialist: Help with the Young
Venturer Fellowship Program and with development projects part or full-time. The
qualified volunteer should be enterprising, and fundraising and institutional development
experience will be helpful. The time commitment is flexible. This position is located at
the Global Office in Arlington, Virginia, easily accessed by the Rosslyn Metro station.

2. Become a Member of a Youth Venture Selection Panel: Youth Venture is seeking
judicious adults of any background to join the Youth Venture Selection Panel, the panel
to which two to four youth teams present their Venture Action Plan for evaluation.
Selection panels occur either live or virtually over the phone, depending on where the
venture teams are located. A panelist will receive the venture applications in advance
and will be able to question the teams before participating in the final round of decisionmaking with their fellow panelists.
The time commitment is approximately 3 hours per panel (one hour for reading the
selection booklet and up to 2 hours for the panel participation). Panels are launched
throughout the year as teams in the pipeline become ready to present. While some
months are busier than others, at least one virtual panel is offered every 2-3 weeks.
Live panels occur most frequently in New York, and occasionally in Concord, NH;
Leominster, MA; Seattle, WA; and Washington, DC.
Participating in a panel will allow a volunteer to get right to the heart of Youth Venture
and play an important role in a short amount of time. If you want to help young people to

3. Become a Member of a YSA Youth Venture Selection Panel: Youth Service
America (YSA) awards up to $1000 in start-up funds to young social entrepreneurs who
want to create sustainable civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses that are a
lasting asset to the community. YSA Youth Venture teams also host National and
Global Youth Service Day events. See more details about YSA at

YSA Youth Venture holds virtual phone panels to choose new YSA participants. YSA
panels have preparation and a time commitment similar to the Youth Venture panels. To

and your contact information.
4. Technical Allies Program:
Technical Allies is a program that hosts a series of teleconference workshops where
“experts” in particular fields connect with Youth Venture Teams to provide advice on a
variety of topics such as marketing, event planning, volunteer recruitment, etc.
Workshops are held twice a month over the phone (dates vary) and are one hour in

length. Technical Allies can be lawyers, artists, businessmen and women, writers,
anyone with acquired skills who is willing to share them with our young people. The TA
Program has two components:
Special Guests: This program presents an opportunity for Venturers to ask experienced
entrepreneurs and venturers questions pertaining to their technical field in a workshop
atmosphere. The workshops are one hour (plus prep time), are held over the phone,
and are facilities by a Youth Venture staff member. This is an excellent opportunity for
Technical Allies with limited time.
E-Advisors: E-Advisors are committed to responding to Venturers’ questions via email.
Youth Venture staff relay emails from Venturers to Allies in relevant technical fields who
can answer their question within 48 hours. This requires a long-term but flexible
commitment to Youth Venture. The strength of a TA’s impact is dependent on the level
of involvement and dedication. The approximate time commitment is 3-5 hours a month.

Changemakers

Changemakers is an Ashoka initiative that focuses on the rapidly growing world of social
innovation by providing solutions and resources needed to help everyone explore the
fundamental principles of successful social innovation. Changemakers has built the
world's first global online "open source" community that competes to surface the best
social solutions, and then collaborates to refine, enrich, and implement those solutions.

Changemakers is looking for volunteers for the following three projects:
1. Create marketing packets with competition finalists. Work would consist of basic
word document creations, etc.
2. Create a database for each competition. This would consist of doing online research
in specific topic areas, including Disruptive Innovations in Health, Climate Change, and
Games for Life, among others. The work would consist of gathering contact information
and entering it into the database.
3. Research Fellows working in the competition topic areas and write feature articles on
their work for the Changemakers website. This would require excellent writing skills.

Update Website or Profile Universities Teaching Social Entrepreneurship

As part of Ashoka’s Global Academy, The University Network is a network of academics
and practitioners that are working to strengthen teaching and research in the field of
social entrepreneurship. They are seeking a volunteer well-versed in Drupal to help

them simplify their website. They anticipate this taking about 10-15 hours over the
course of a few weeks. An ongoing position is a possibility. Check out the site at

Volunteer with an Ashoka Fellow
Use Web and Graphic Design Skills to Support Women Entrepreneurs in Mexico
Virtual
Maria Cristina Zepeda Porras (Ashoka Fellow, Mexico) is the founder of SIEMBRA
(Integrated Services for Women Entrepreneurs) whose mission is to utilize capacity
building strategies to provide Mexican women entrepreneurs with equal development
opportunities, fostering their independence and self-sufficiency.
She is looking for a junior level Web and Graphic Designer who could spend five hours a
week over four months (or longer if desired) working remotely on a variety of projects
with a project leader located in Mexico City. The volunteer would help to revitalize the
website, create online stores and sell products on Ebay. They would also help to design
catalogs of wool rugs, labels, user manuals, newspaper ads and e-banners. The ideal
candidate will have experience with different technologies that allow for international
sales offering buyer security. They should have knowledge of graphic design using
Photoshop, a reliable PC, and hi-speed Internet access. A degree in web or graphic
design is a plus. This position is open to North Americans with proficient English and/or
Spanish.

Fight Poverty Through Educational Reform
Xela, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
Jorge Chojolan (Ashoka Fellow, Guatemala) has plans to create an alternative school
system designed to spur educational reforms throughout Guatemala, a country where
65% of the indigenous population is illiterate, and 66% of its children are not in school.
Jorge needs help to bring his organization to the next level of professional development
so that its model school, the Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias, can be brought to scale.
The Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias is a K-12 school providing quality, culturally relevant
education to 200 students. He is looking for volunteers to fill the following two positions:
Teachers: There are two English Teacher positions available: kindergarten through
second grade, and third through sixth grade. Also available are positions for teaching
art, drama, dance, and other enrichment classes. These 25 hour/week positions are
open until filled; summer positions have been filled. The volunteers should be

enthusiastic, love children, have some teaching experience, open to innovative
pedagogical methods, and have medium proficiency in Spanish.
Grant Writer: This is a 25 hour/week position to raise funds for operations and new
programs. The volunteer will work with the development team to identify and cultivate
potential supporting foundations and write for and follow through with grants. The
volunteer must have excellent written and interpersonal skills, and be proficient in
Spanish. Experience in grant writing is a plus.
If you are committed to fighting poverty in Guatemala through educational reform, these
are outstanding opportunities to work with award-winning project leadership and to see
concrete results measured in lives transformed. They offer an experience of
Guatemala's rich culture, physical beauty, and social history, as well as language
learning opportunities. The Colegio is not able to offer financial support for these
positions at this time, but very comfortable living can be had in Xela (including
occasional travel) for an average of $400/month.

Defend Rights of Child Workers
Bogota, Colombia and/or Virtual
A lawyer by training, Alejandro Martínez Rodriquez (Ashoka Fellow, Colombia) has
developed a multifaceted approach to improving the lives of working children and
adolescents by empowering them to defend their own rights, including the right to
dignified work. He has created a community organization in southwest Bogota called
“Small Worker” to defend the rights of adolescent boys and girls and their families.
Small Worker has three programs: education for 140 child workers by 12 teachers;
solidifying economic initiatives for 70 children with 8 adult administrators; and
accompanying groups of 250 child workers with 25 administrators.
Small Worker needs volunteer help to help generate resources and create financing
strategies. They also need help to create communication products through videos,
music, art, use of the Web, etc. Finally, a volunteer could help establish relationships
with potential collaborators.
Volunteers will be based in Bogota and will receive food and housing at Small Worker or
with neighborhood families.

Help Protect Rainforest by Sustainable Mining and Environmental Education
Virtual and Medellin, Colombia
In the Chocó region of Colombia, small communities on the edge of the rainforest are
renting their land to destructive gold-mining groups in order to make enough money to
survive. When these groups pull out, they leave the land poisoned and unsuitable for
agriculture, putting the people of Chocó in an even worse situation. Catalina Cock
Duque (Ashoka Fellow, Colombia) is working with the people of Chocó to take up gold
mining themselves, using small-scale environmentally friendly mining techniques.

Catalina has created the “Corporación Oro Verde” mining model to promote green gold
mining techniques, fair pricing, commercial contacts, and everything else that residents
of Chocó need to go into the gold mining business for themselves.
Catalina is looking for a volunteer to work virtually (email and skype) with her
communications department over six months for one to two hours a week to revise and
translate into Spanish the existing literature of her foundation and its programs for
specific publications. The volunteer should have excellent communication and language
skills.
She also is seeking a volunteer who can help adapt standards of environmental
education to enable children of the city of Medellin understand the biogeography of
Choco, and prepare them to act as environmentally sensitive citizens. This volunteer
could help virtually for July and August and then would help local schools conduct
workshops with the adapted methodology during September and October in the city of
Medellin.

Redesign Website and Help Raise Funds for Innovative Health Clubhouses
Santiago, Chile
The Center for the Study of Motor Disorders (CETRAM) was founded by Pedro Chana
(Ashoka Fellow, Chile) to promote a treatment model that allows doctors, patients, and
patient associations to make clinical decisions by consensus that are in the best
interests of a patient’s physical and psychological well being. Through a network of
“clubhouses” for those with chronic illnesses like Parkinson’s disease, patients can
receive medical attention from a variety of specialists, including neurologists,
psychiatrists and occupational therapists. These clubhouses break down the current
compartmentalized treatment system and create one where patients (called “members”)
and their families can educate themselves about medication and therapy, consult the
relevant experts, and ultimately make their own decisions about treatment.

http://www.agrupacionparkinson.cl and to help raise funds for the clubhouses. Contact

Fundraise for Women’s Equality
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil or Virtual
Amalia Fischer (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil) has pioneered a new avenue for social
investment in the women of Brazil through the creation of the Angela Borba Fund
(www.angelaborbafundo.org). Unlike company foundations and funding institutions that
create and administer their own social programs, the Borba Fund raises its own
resources and redirects them to existing, independent programs for gender equality run
by women. She is looking for a volunteer to help raise additional funds for distribution.

Publicity and Fundraising for Brazilian Deaf Community
Alagoas, Brazil
Irae Cardoso (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil) seeks assistance with strategic planning and
resource development for her organization, AAPPE, which works with the deaf and
special needs communities in the state of Alagoas, in northeast Brazil. AAPPE offers
110 deaf students education, healthcare, civil rights defense and labor market
integration (it has helped 380 deaf people in this field) and handles 9000 consultations a
month. Irae is leading an effort to have states in Brazil recognize the hearing impaired
as a cultural and linguistic minority with the same rights as other minority groups.
AAPPE is a growing organization and plans to expand to the interior area of the state. It
needs a volunteer to help review its marketing and organizational development,
create long-term strategies that can meet the growing demand for its services, increase
the visibility of its work and mobilize adequate resources.
The qualified volunteer should be based in Brazil, fluent in Portuguese, and able to work
skillfully within the organization´s website developing these new resources.

Increase Women’s Role in Turkish Society
Istanbul, Turkey and Virtual
Sengul Akcar (Ashoka Fellow, Turkey) is increasing women's professional and personal
opportunities and broadening the perception of women's role in Turkish society. Her
organization, the Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work (FSWW), is a women’s
organization supporting 35 local groups which have organized to start social and
economic initiatives and increase involvement in local decision making. Capacity
building initiatives include early childhood education, product and small business
deveopment, micro-credit, gender budgeting, pre and post disaster preparedness, and
leadership and organizing. Check their website at www.kedv.org.tr for more information

FSWW is looking for women volunteers with the expertise, commitment and
communication skills to carry out the following activities:







Writing case studies and evaluation reports
Desk top publishing
Documentary film making
Fundraising and project proposal writing
Bringing women’s products to the international markets
Designing cloths, handicrafts, accessories from traditional patterns
Consulting and training in areas such as soap making, wooden toy
production, urban gardening, and more.
Volunteers should spend 3-12 months at FSWW’s headquarters in Istanbul and be
willing to travel to partner groups within Turkey when needed. Accomodations and travel
expenses within Turkey will be provided.

Use Business Acumen to Support New Crop Economy
Guwahati City, Assam, India
Pranjal Baruah (Ashoka Fellow, India) established the Mushroom Development
Foundation (MDF) to establish a new crop economy for small farmers. MDF helps the
unemployed and micro-entrepreneurs to process and market agricultural waste as
organic fertilizer which is then used for mushroom cultivation by small farmers. MDF
then helps the farmers to gain better market control so they can compete equitably and
fairly producing optimum income for both producers and sellers.
Mr. Baruah is looking for a volunteer to work for three months in Guwahati City who is
experienced in finance and administration, fundraising, and business and strategy
development. Housing will be provided in a hostel (single room) with phone, TV, internet
access or may be arranged privately for a small fee. All modern facilities are within easy

Advise and Advocate for the Rights of Indigenous Adivasi
Surat District, India
Stanny Jebamalai (Ashoka Fellow, India) leads the Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre
(LAHRC) which provides legal advice and develops leadership among the indigenous
tribal Adivasi community. They not only advocate and provide legal counsel to the
Adivasi, but conduct para-legal training and legal literacy programs so the Adivasi can
equip themselves to fight for their human rights.
The LAHRC needs volunteers who can relate to the Adivasi and their struggle for
survival. Issues will involve land disputes, water rights, tribal self rule and good
governance. Ideally, volunteers should be of Indian ancestry and have knowledge of
Gujarati, Hindi and English. Advocacy and journalistic skills are also necessary. The
volunteers would be located in the seven talukas of Surat district and could stay with
LAHRC staff. Volunteers should be prepared to stay for at least one month.

Redesign Website for National Help Desk for Seeing-Impaired
New Delhi, India
The Vision Enhancement Center (VEC) was founded by George Abraham (Ashoka
Fellow, India) to institutionalize comprehensive, non-medical eye care services through
both clinical and non-clinical means so that the seeing impaired can realize their full
potentials. It provides counseling, equipment training, medical referrals, and rehab
services. VEC is setting up a National Help Desk which is currently served by phone,
promoted by a weekly radio program and powered by the website www.eyeway.org.
The Help Desk receives up to 20 calls weekly and connects those in need with people
and organizations that can provide appropriate help.
Mr. Abraham is looking for a volunteer who can work for four to six months in New Delhi
redesigning their website, making it more user-friendly and interactive, and promoting it
in ways that will raise hits on the site. The volunteer should be skilled in web design and
programming, and understand the accessibility norms of the W3C. A stipend of Rs.5000

Use Web, Media and Writing Skills to Help the Marginalized Dalits of India
North Delhi, India
Ashok Bharti (Ashoka Fellow, India), founder of the World Dignity Forum and pioneer in
the creation of ownership structures for poor consumers, is working to establish self
empowering institutions for the Dalits, the most marginalized people in India. In
December, he is hosting a National Conference of Dalit Organizations, a week-long
event that will include up to 1000 Dalit organizations.
Mr. Bharti is looking for volunteers who will play a key role in communication,
documentation of the event, and internet support. The volunteers will develop content,
write media copy, prepare reports, and help with an Internet campaign. They should
have knowledge about media and communication products, personal drive and initiative.
The bulk of the work will take place from mid-July to the end of January 2008 and be
conducted in North Delhi, near Delhi University. Possibilities for room and board are
very limited but can be discussed.

Serve as Physician, Administrator or Fundraiser for Rural Health Care
State of AP, Hyderabad, India and Virtual
Dr. Patricia Bidinger (Ashoka Fellow, India) leads the Institute for Rural Health Studies
(www.irhs.org) which provides health care to impoverished villages in India. She is
looking to fill three volunteer positions:
1. Physician: This volunteer doctor will work in rural clinics in one of the most
impoverished districts in the state of AP, India. English speaking staff are
receptive to learning and eager to add new skills. This volunteer should enjoy
teaching, have basic medical skills as necessary in a primary care center and be
prepared to stay at least four weeks. Housing and food are provided in the
villages from Monday through Friday and in Hyderabad on weekends.
2. Administrator: This volunteer will work in the city office in Hyderabad with
occasional travel to villages to improve administrative procedures in the clinics.
The goal is to make this office more self-sufficient by improving skills such as
problem solving, accounting, and writing. The English speaking staff is eager to
learn and to acquire new administrative and financial accounting skills. The
volunteer should have strong administrative skills. A person with counseling
skills would also be helpful in teaching patient counselors to improve delivery of
care. The volunteer should plan to stay a minimum of two months.
3. Fundraiser: The Institute would like to build a model home for elderly villagers,
mostly older widows near starvation. The home will be open to the elderly of all
castes, would have quarters attached for paramedics and volunteers. It also will
raise and grow food for its members. The Institute also needs to replace the van
that auxiliary nurse’s use in their village travels while screening for and treating

cervical cancer in the villages. The volunteer will help identify funding sources
and advise on grant writing. This position could be filled virtually.

serious issues such as water, gender, violence against women, the environment, and

Support an Information Campaign on Genetically Engineered Crops and Foods

and the entrepreneur to attract new participants and resources to the long-standing
problem of rural development by providing commercial incentives and technical support.
She is currently engaged in an information campaign on genetically engineered crops
and foods, examining their impact on the environment, human and animal health, small

Dr. Sahai is looking for motivated volunteers with an aptitude for writing, who can help
generate public debates and advocacy strategies to improve government policy.
Volunteers should have excellent English writing skills and some familiarity with the

creates awareness among urbanites about the importance of rainwater harvesting
(RWH) in cities and rural areas to sustain the groundwater resource. The Rain Centre is
a one-stop information and assistance center, the first of its kind in the entire country.

volunteer help in the following areas:
On-site in Chennai:
 Spread awareness of RWH related activities within India and abroad.
 Carry out well-tailored surveys in and around Chennai to document the
groundwater scenario and the impact of RWH.

and books.
 Help make video films about rural and urban RWH in India.
Volunteers should be committed to the importance of RWH and reasonably fluent in

Establish New Database System
Mumbai, India
A former national rugby player, Matthew Spacie (Ashoka Fellow, India) brings
recreational sports and outdoor adventure to children living in some of the poorest

circumstances in the world. Through his organization, Magic Bus, he is building their
confidence and sense of community and teaching them to value teamwork and physical
health. Magic Bus works in Mumbai with over 4000 children each year and supports a
team of over 100 staff members.
Magic Bus has recently received a donation of a new database system to replace its
antiquated one. The new system is an open source web-based database for charities
and societies. The database can be accessed from all over the world and will combine
UK, global and Indian members.
They now need a full time person for a 3-4 month period to oversee the migration of the
old access based system to the new database, work through the data, contact donors
and supporters to update the system and then create a management system for the
organization to use the database effectively. The role will then involve teaching staff how
to use the system. It will be possible to collaborate with the creators of the new system,
who are also based in Mumbai.
The volunteer will:






Review how Magic Bus departments would like to use the database to support
their functions
Conduct resource planning, identifying who is needed to manage the system
effectively
Create a simple and effective system for data entry
Design grouping and functions to support our organizational requirements
Collate and categorize data
Document the database systems for new recruits to implement
The qualified volunteer should possess excellent computer, organizational and data
management skills, analytical ability and a capacity to formulate a plan that is responsive
to expressed needs. Assertiveness combined with patient listening and the ability to
meet deadlines is a must.
The volunteer will be working at the Magic Bus office in Mumbai for a minimum of two
months and up to six. Ideally this opportunity is for a self funded volunteer, however a

Fight Human Trafficking and Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness
Shillong Meghalaya, India and Virtual
Hasina Kharbhih (Ashoka Fellow, India) has established Impulse NGO Network to fight
human trafficking in the historically isolated and conflict-ridden northeast area of India,
which has become a hub for the sexual exploitation of vulnerable populations,
particularly children. Hasina is attacking this problem through her “Meghalaya Model,”
which has been adopted by government agencies and civil society organizations (CSOs)
statewide and is drawing increasing national attention. Her focus is prevention,

protection and prosecution through a comprehensive network of police, the legal system,
local government, Hasina’s organization, and other CSOs. This network prevents
trafficking by keeping watch over an extended database of vulnerable children,
prosecutes traffickers, rescues trafficked children, and provides for their rehabilitation.
Another focus area is HIV/AIDS intervention, building health awareness and initiatives to
ensure the proper provision of health care by the government.
Hasina is looking for volunteers who can conduct research, produce posters, pamphlets,
a newsletter and other material on trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and human rights. The
volunteers will help create community awareness on these issues by organizing training
on HIV/AIDS and human trafficking and children’s workshops. They will also help to
design posters, pamphlets and can contribute to the monthly newsletter. A virtual
volunteer could help with internet research.
The qualified volunteer will have good communication, writing and computer skills,
preferably with some experience in web design and library skills. Volunteers will work

Regional Director, Ashoka Arab World, Iman Bibars, writes,” On the evening of April
21st, I received (or actually collected) an award on behalf of Bill Drayton and Ashoka
given by WANGO.” Ashoka & Bill received the Civil Society Development Award for
2006. The World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations is an international
organization uniting NGOs worldwide in the cause of advancing peace and global well
being. WANGO helps to provide the mechanism and support needed for NGOs to
connect, partner, share, inspire, and multiply their contributions to solve humanity’s basic
problems.
Two persons fighting for human rights in different parts of India were recently awarded a
prestigious human rights prize. The 2007 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights went jointly
to Fellow Lenin Raghuvanshi for his resistance to caste-based discrimination in the
country's north and Irom Sharmila for her resistance to the indiscriminate use of military
force against civilians in the northeast. Raghuvanshi leads the People's Vigilance
Committee on Human Rights which have over 50,000 members working against caste
discrimination and torture across five Indian states. Note that two past recipients of this
award, Basil Fernando and Jayanti Dandeniya, are Ashoka Fellows.
Prema Gopalan, Executive Director of the Indian NGO Swayam Shikshan Prayog
[SSP], has been selected the 2007 recipient of the Mary Fran Myers Gender and
Disaster Award. Prema is recognized as an expert in community driven, gender
equitable disaster response and resilience initiatives which help transform the chaos
of disasters into opportunities for women to lead and restore their communities.

South African Education Minister, Naledi Pandor, recently presided over the graduation
of the first African extra-mural development teachers. EMDP is a program developed by
Fellow Jonny Gevisser. It advocates child-centred teaching and the transformation of
schools into community hubs. The graduation also signified the completion of the first
phase of the pilot project with the South African government and the Minister
commented that this extra-mural approach is the most innovative way she has come
across of using schools as creative, caring, safe and accessible hubs for South Africa’s
children and communities.
Humberto Prado reports that he has been elected spokesperson of Venezuela’s “Foro
por la Vida” (Forum for Life), the coalition of 20 human rights organizations in Venezuela
of which his organization is a member. This is a two-year term for him, a huge
opportunity, and a lot of responsibility on top of his work with the Observatorio
Venezolano and the Observatorio Latinoamericano de Prisiones! Humberto’s primary
concern is prison reform.
Global Fellow Orri Vigfüsson was just named a winner of the 2007 Goldman

environmental honor of its kind, the Goldman Prize annually awards US$125,000 to
environmental heroes from each of the world’s six inhabited continental regions.
Through his North Atlantic Salmon Fund, Orri is restoring the North Atlantic wild salmon
through creating viable alternatives to large-scale commercial open-sea fishing on both
sides of the sea.

Ashoka Fellow Siriwan Vongkietpaisan has long been pushing for enforcement of
Thailand’s anti-slavery legislation. Recently a Bangkok businesswoman was sentenced
to seven years in jail for keeping a girl as a slave. This is the first time in Thai legal
history that the anti-slavery law has been enforced despite widespread slave-like labor in
sweat shops and private households. Congratulations to Siriwan for her part in this
landmark, precedent-setting conviction.
The Essel Group and Zee Network recently honored Ayyappa Masagi with the Essel
Karnataka’s “Best Social Service Award.” Ayyappa is working to improve the economic
condition of farmers by helping them take charge of their water resources. He shows
farmers how to ensure that all the rain that falls on their farms is collected and
percolated into the ground.
Al Etmanski, Canadian Fellow and executive director of PLAN (Planned Lifetime
Advocacy Network), reports the success of the campaign to establish a national
disability savings plan. The Canadian Federal Minister of Finance recently announced
the establishment of a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) - a world first. The
RDSP is a combination investment fund, matching grant program and savings bond
which initiates a movement toward asset accumulation for people with disabilities and

Awards. “Kashf” is led by Pakistani Fellow Roshaneh Zafar. The Consultative Group to
Assist the Poor (CGAP), is a consortium of 33 public and private development agencies
working together to expand access to financial services for the poor. CGAP's staff,
working from World Bank offices in Washington, DC and Paris, serve donor agencies,
