Workshop description
#1 Experimental Water Media
with Mary Alice Braukman NWS
This workshop is an adventure in risk-taking, pushing the medium as far as it will go. It
involves new ideas and new ideas in techniques of layering, showing textures by means of
collage, and how to create different surfaces. Recycling of old paintings in some layering
techniques and will ultimately be collage papers. One goal is to give the student awareness,
of the medium, and emphasize visual growth in a self-expression. The class will begin with
two days of techniques and discussing how to enhance paintings. These first two days will
not be a time to complete paintings. Braukman will demonstrate, show slides of her work,
other experimental artists, individual and class critiques each day. All styles of painting,
representational and non-representational are welcome. She feels this is not a class for
beginners because they should know their medium first before “breaking rules.” Mary Alice
‘s layered, paintings invite the viewer to study the complex compositions that fit together to
create unity, and to experiment with color that stimulates excitement.
#2 Mixed Water Media and Collage Design Workshop
(Usually follows Workshop #1)Art Center, workshop. This workshop will involve the new
ideas and new ideas in collage. The class will begin by doing basic design studies with torn or
cut colored papers that will be your basis for a larger painting. This is your “thumb nail”
sketch but in collage form. It will teach the student to simplify shapes and strengthen design.
The basic steps in collage are to help the student think about design and begin abstract
thinking. These techniques conquer the fear of permanency that paint often gives the student.
This allows freedom and breaks intimidation many students have when beginning new
techniques or are in a new situation. Anything and everything are possible. The following
days will cover: various paper use, transfers, staining, marbling, work with found objects,
applying collage over painted shapes and sometimes cutting up old unresolved paintings and
redesigning the shapes and form. This class is for all levels and serves as an excellent means
to increase the painter’s awareness of shape, color, hard and soft edges, and textures. These
collages can become sophisticated pieces having depth and coming “off the page” or simply
exercises in design and color.
#3 Experimental Techniques in Pouring of Mixed Media
We have covered this technique in the #1 but not in depth. Pouring mixed water media paints
onto sculptures and flat paper. Thinking of three-dimensional work or flat. We cover this in
brief form in the #1 workshop. This is for the experience painter and one understanding color
and design. We do not simply pour and let accidents become your painting. This becomes a
study of taking accidents and experimenting with fluid colors and pulling it together.
Braukman will demonstrate, show slides of her work and other artists working in similar
modes, individual and class critiques and discuss how they can best learn to evaluate their
own work.
New Challenges to Experimental Art & Printmaking - the Arts Center St. Petersburg
February 16-20, 2004
Mary Alice Braukman, NWS, Joan Klutch, AWS
Joan Klutch and Mary Alice will team teach a five day workshop on all new ideas and
techniques of layering, developing textures by means of collage, and using various mediums
to create broken surfaces. This class will cover monotype and solar printing These images will
then be printed on various surfaces (papers, acetate, aluminum, canvas or the base of your
choice.) These techniques will be developed in conjunction with new and different Golden
mediums . Discover why and how to use these mixed media techniques in your style of
painting. Our main class goal will be to give you (as participants) an awareness of the use of
these mediums and to emphasize visual growth in your art through self expression. All styles
of painting are welcome. Everyone will participate and benefit through a sharing of ideas.
