1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Communications staff is responsible for the Intercollegiate Athletics Department’s (ICA) publicity
and external communications efforts through the department’s media services and video efforts as
well as its official website. The positions act as a liaison between the coaches, student-athletes,
sports programs and ICA with the local, regional and national media, fans/general public, conference
personnel and National Conference Athletics Association (NCAA) officials to pitch stories and handle
information requests from around the country. The incumbents work to present ICA and the University
of Nevada, Reno in a positive light.
Range 1 – Assistant Director, Athletics Media Services
The Assistant Director, Athletics Media Services, under supervision, handles the day-to-day media
services responsibilities for selected sports, including writing, producing and editing media guides and
game programs, writing weekly and event news releases, updating the department web site,
compiling statistics, and maintaining historical archives. The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant
Athletics Director, Communications.
Range 2 – Assistant Athletics Director, Media Services (in addition to R1 above)
The Assistant Athletics Director, Media Services, monitors work of the entry level Media Services staff
and provides oversight of daily operations. The position coordinates the press box/press row
operations and statistical crews for each of the assigned sports. The Assistant Athletics Director
reports to the Assistant Athletics Director, Communications.
Range 3 – Associate Athletics Director, Communications (in addition to R2 above)
The Associate Athletics Director, Communications, delegates and supervises work of ICA
Communications staff (media services, video and digital coordination). The position serves as the
intermediary between the media and ICA and acts as the Department’s spokesperson when
necessary. The individual serves as the contact for selected sports and supervises Communications
staff in the day-to-day media services responsibilities for all of the University’s varsity sports. The
position reports to the Special Assistant to the President/Director, Athletics.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without

Level of Freedom:
Information released from the ICA Communications Office through information requests, media
guides, game programs, and press releases is the main way that many people learn about the
athletics department so it is imperative that these individuals produce quality work with and without
supervision.
Range 1 – Assistant Director, Athletics Media Services
The individual is under the supervision of the Assistant Athletics Director, Communications but may
be the sole media services representative at events. The position distributes information and makes
routine decisions without supervision. The supervisor is consulted on creation of new information or
media documents for final approval before distribution.
Range 2 – Assistant Athletics Director, Media Services
The individual is under the supervision of the Assistant Athletics Director, Communications, but is
responsible for the day-to-day management of the Media Services Department and will often be the
sole media services representative at events. The position distributes information and makes routine
decisions without supervision. The supervisor is consulted for final approval on major media
publication plans.
Range 3 – Associate Athletics Director, Communications
The Associate Athletics Director works closely with the administration, coaches and staff members to
present the University and ICA as a professional and successful organization to the media,
conference and National Council of Athletics Association (NCAA) officials, selection committees,
donors, fans, community members and other constituents. The individual must provide sound public
relations advice and strategy to all members of the athletics department. The position works with
minimal supervision by the Director, Athletics. The supervisor has final confirmation of major media
news releases and programs promoting the ICA.
Impact:
Professional, well-written publications and regularly updated website material produced by the media
services office go hand in hand with presenting ICA and University in the best light possible.

Contacts with the media, placement of positive stories and press releases and handling of sensitive
situations also help to reinforce the goal of the successful promotion of the University.

Failure to follow ICA media and publication procedures and policies could result in a negative
response from the public within and outside the state of Nevada with regard to the University athletics
programs.

Poor performance reflects negatively on the program, department and university and may result in a
decrease of gifts and ticket sales. Failure to teach and supervise entry level positions to provide
accurate and successful media services would affect the ability of ICA to promote the athletics
programs.
