Pre-conference field trip of Portland’s Green Infrastructure for Climate Change
Wednesday, September 4, 2013 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Portland is frequently highlighted as a 'green city', but it is also striving to be a climate
resilient city. This 3-hour tour takes participants to three different on-the-ground climate
adaptation projects and hopefully spark discussion on how cities can become more
climate resilient.
Registration - Field trip is free, but participants must pre-register, space is limited
Transportation provided – bus leaves promptly at 1:00 PM: Meet at Governor Hotel main
entrance on SW 11th Avenue.
What to bring: Wear sturdy walking shoes, bring sun protection, water and a snack.
Led by Portland Bureau of Environmental Services’ Kaitlin Lovell, Linda Dobson and Maggie
Skenderian.
Itinerary (Trip begins promptly at 1:00 PM, site arrival times are approximate, we will return at 4:00 PM):
1:00 PM - Depart Governor Hotel for South Waterfront for a tour of a suite of green stormwater
tools, including green streets, ecoroofs and a hybrid waterfront park with restoration.
2:00 PM – Depart for Foster Floodplain in east Portland, a 70+ acre floodplain restoration
project that removed over 60 houses from the floodplain.
3:00 PM - Return via Crystal Springs, one of the coldest streams in Portland where BES is in
the midst of a 2.7 headwater-to-mouth restoration effort, including 9 culvert upgrades, wetland
and stream restoration.
4:00 PM – Return to Governor Hotel.
