Co-Course Master, Special Topics in Microbial Pathogenesis. Bio5217.
Course for 2nd year PhD and MD-PhD students in micro program. Critical presentation and
evaluation of selected papers from literature. Presentation and critical (in class “study
section”) review of grant applications on topics chosen by each individual student.
Meets four hours per week, fall semester; ~8-12 students most years.
Participant in Phage Hunters for Freshman undergrad course. Bio192.
HHMI sponsored course to introduce undergrads to excitement and understanding of
research (Sarah Elgin, course master). First semester (Bio191, in fall) Entails
Mycobacteriophage isolation from local soils, DNA prep and restriction, etc. during fall
semester. Phage genome sequencing over winterbreak. Annotation and polishing sequence
during spring semester. Enrichment with lectures, discussions and guided reading and
evaluation of reviews and original papers on DNA structure, replication, expression, **
phage biology, phage therapy, phage genetic diversity and evolution, and microbial
pathogenesis, especially in regard to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. I participate in about ten
~two hour sessions during the spring semester, focusing on components of the list above,
starting with ** phage biology; ~25 students this spring semester.
Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology and Pathogenesis. Bio5392. For first year grad students (Joe
Vogel, coursemaster). My lecture in spring semester focuses on phage molecular genetics and
evolution.
