Kindergarten Units
The students will identify the five major parts of a computer and demonstrate proper care of software and
hardware. The students will spend most of the year using prepared software and identifying letters and
numbers on the keyboard.
Unit 1 - Introduction to Computers
Proficiency Goals
Students will identify and name computer components.
Students will demonstrate proper care when working with computer components.
Students will demonstrate the ability to handle software correctly.
Comments
Importance of using correct terminology. Can be taught in a group setting rather than individually. Use visual
examples to teach handling the components and floppy disks.
Unit 2 - Introduction to the Keyboard
Proficiency Goals
Students will associate the letters of the alphabet with the symbols on the keyboard.
Students will use alphabet drill and practice applications to aid in learning the letters of the alphabet
as well as the backspace/delete key.
Students will associate numbers with the symbols on the keyboard.
Students will use number drill and practice applications to aid in learning the numbers.
Comments
Teachers need to teach those letters and numbers which the teacher can be sure are used in each
application first. Teachers can then make use of the alphabet and number drill and practice applications to
extend the students knowledge of them. You may find it necessary to use colored stickers on the keyboard
to begin use of these applications. Also consider coordinating the use of the alphabet on the keyboard into
your reading class.
Unit 3 - Working With Commercial Software
Proficiency Goals
Students will review the proper techniques in handling components and software.
Students will work with teacher launched software.
Students will work with the paint module of Appleworks to paint, edit, and print their compositions. (
Comments
This unit is structured to allow the teacher liberty in selecting which drill and practice applications will benefit
their students. Teachers must launch the application for the students; therefore it is advised that the teacher
be familiar with each application the students are using. It is important that the teacher periodically review
and watch as the students are working.
