JOB PURPOSE
To provide the technical support to the Tissue Services laboratory in the delivery
of a range of clinical tissues on a timely basis, meeting all quality and regulatory
standards required by SNBTS and its customers. Developing the service in line
with future clinical needs.

KEY RESULT AREAS


















Process, store and dispatch human tissue products according to Standard
Operating Procedures.
Co-ordinate, through communication with source hospitals/testing
laboratories, the receipt and processing of samples and documentation from
tissue donors to ensure the maintenance of the tissue audit trail.
To keep accurate records of all procedures, both computer and hard copy,
maintaining an audit trail.
Ensure that confidentiality of all information relating to donors and patients
is maintained at all times.
Preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
Plan and undertake the development and validation of new laboratory
processing methods and procedures both for development purposes, and for
the QC of products.
Prepare formal documentation for new procedures to enable developments to
be introduced in a suitably controlled manner.
Participate in the on-call rota to take donor referrals. Provide 24 hour
laboratory support for critical equipment and emergency issue of tissue, to
provide an out-of-hours clinical service.
Computer knowledge and keyboard skills are necessary to interface with the
software controlling the receipt, tracking and issue of donor medical and
product data and ensuring that associated files are kept orderly and up to
date.
Participate in the cadaveric and multi organ donor tissue retrieval programme
as part of the collection and processing team.
Understand the requirements for tissue products and their clinical
importance.
Having a working knowledge of UK laws and regulations for organ and
tissue donation.
To be familiar with the aims, policies and future plans for the Tissue
Services.
Contribute to the generation of the Directorate operational plan on an annual
basis.
Participate in the departmental appraisal programme.
Possess an understanding of the principals of the ISO 9000 quality system.
Maintain an awareness of appropriate scientific literature so that work is
carried out according to up-to-date knowledge and practice.
Make a positive effort to promote his/her own personal safety and that of
others by taking reasonable care at work, by carrying out the requirements of
the law or following recognised codes of practice provided or advised by
management to ensure safe working.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND/OR EXPERIENCE




Liaise with SNBTS Protein Fractionation Centre staff on matters affecting
their service arrangements with TS.
Liaise with nursing, medical and surgical staff to advise end-users on
quantity / quality & effective use of tissues and products and to arrange their
timely delivery. Modify laboratory working practice in order to
accommodate the fluctuating requirements of cardiac and orthopaedic
surgeons and other clinicians.
Liaise with National Quality Manager to ensure Tissue Service
documentation is reviewed & updated in a timely manner.
The post holder should possess a Degree in a Biological Science, or a related
subject or equivalent training. Appropriate research experience in cell
biology and/or experience in Tissue Banking or Blood Transfusion would be
an advantage.
Self motivated individual with good communication skills.
The ability to work effectively in a small team.
ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
Assignment:



Weekly meetings will be held with the Tissue Services Laboratory Manager
to discuss any on-going issues.
Monthly lab meetings will be held with Tissue Services Laboratory Staff to
discuss ongoing workload as well as any new projects.
Following appropriate training, the post-holder must be able to work
independently and under their own initiative.

Success in key result areas will be reviewed by Tissue Services Laboratory
Manager and Tissue Services Operations Manager. Formal Assessment of
performance will be done during an annual review.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND EFFORT
Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to hazardous working conditions, including:
 Working for periods in cold environments –40°C to –80°C.
 Working with protective gloves handling frozen bone and tissues.
 Working with dry ice and liquid nitrogen.
 Working for long periods under class A and B clean room conditions.
Exposure to operating theatres and mortuaries during tissue retrieval.
Frequent use of VDUs.
Direct contact with untested blood samples & tissues.
Handling untested and potential/biohazard tissue.
Processing & disposal of tissues known to be positive for virology markers
or microbiological contaminants.
Frequent on-call & out of hours work.
Physical Effort
 There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for
extended periods e.g. lifting and moving boxes and transport boxes of bone
and tissues to and from storage freezers.
 Working in & maintaining aseptic environment to ensure sterility of final
product.
Mental Effort




Collating clinical data to allow clearance of donated tissues for implantation.
There is a frequent requirement for intense concentration within the work
period.
There is a need to respond to the unpredictable nature of the work.
Adapting to the many changes in working practice in a rapidly developing
speciality.
Emotional Effort
 Participate in retrieval of cadaveric tissues in a mortuary environment,
assisting & advising pathologist during tissue retrieval. Physically handling
cadaveric donors.
 Assisting Transplant Coordinators to prepare donor for viewing by family
after tissue donation.
 Frequent exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances e.g. receiving
information on patient death, attendance at post mortems.
