Level 1 (Holt, Rinehart and Winston)
Course Objectives:

Introduction to the culture of German-speaking countries
Development of basic language skills. This includes basic vocabulary and grammar.
Ability to understand simple spoken German.
Ability to read simple German texts. This involves topics such as home life, school
and hobbies.
5) Ability to speak about simple topics such as those mentioned above. Students will be
able to hold short conversations in German.
6) Ability to write German at the beginner level.
Course Requirements:
1) All students are required to bring their textbook, a notebook, and a writing tool to
each class.
2) There will be several quizzes throughout each chapter. A chapter test will be given
upon completion of each chapter.
3) A final exam will be given at the end of the year.
4) Students are required to follow guidelines for any projects which will be assigned.
5) Daily study is essential for developing skills in a foreign language.

Course Objectives:

2) To build upon vocabulary and understanding of grammatical concepts from
the first year.
3) To further the ability of comprehending a conversation in German.
4) To increase reading ability. Continued development of vocabulary and
grammar are essential.
5) To build on the students’ ability to speak in German. Students will be
encouraged to hold short conversations in German.
6) To grow in writing skills in German using simple but important structures.

Course Objectives:
1) To gain more familiarity with the German culture and society of today.
2) Continuing to build on vocabulary and grammatical concepts of the first
two years.
3) To be able to follow directions in German and understand German
conversations.
4) To advance reading ability from previous years.
5) To become more comfortable in holding a conversation in German.
Students will be expected to show the ability to use concepts introduced
this year as well as concepts covered in previous years.
6) To grow in the ability to write German correctly.
Course Requirements:

Class Expectations

Willkommen!
Welcome!
1) Students should be on time and ready for class when the bell rings.
Punctuality counts. Respect and courtesy will be shown to the teacher
and all members of the class at all times. Repeated lateness will be
reported.
2) Bring textbook, notebook, and writing tool to class every day.
3) You must be responsible for bringing your own materials with you to class
every day. Your quarter grade will be effected if your materials are not
with you.
4) Use the opportunity to speak German in class! Keep at it! Practice makes
perfect. Practice, study, listen, speak, practice!
5) Ask as soon as you need help or do not understand something.
6) Homework must be done when it is assigned. There is no credit for late
homework. (Illness is an exception)
7) When you are absent, you must find out what you’ve missed and make up
your work as soon as possible. Ask for your handouts. Make up quizzes
and tests quickly while information is fresh in your mind. It is your
responsibility to find out about and complete missed work.
8) You must be involved with the activities of the class. You may not work on
work for other classes during class time.
9) Oral work counts toward your quarter grade. This involves speaking in
German in questions and answers in class as well as in group work.
10) If projects are assigned, they will be graded as quizzes.
11) At each level of German, learning new vocabulary is an integral part of the
class. Please make every effort to keep up with new vocabulary as we learn
it. This will make cumulative work much easier.
12) Grading will be comprised of homework, class participation, quizzes, and
tests. See the syllabus for a breakdown of percentages.

13) Finally, learning a foreign language is hard work, but well worth it. Daily
commitment is essential for doing well. Practice is the secret!

1) It is imperative in advanced language study that students remain responsible
for all assigned work and keep up with the class. It is expected that all course
work will be completed and submitted on time.
2) It is imperative that German is spoken in class most of the time. You must
make an effort to speak German during the class.
3) Reading and writing assignments will be due on a regular basis.
4) There will be several quizzes throughout each chapter. A test will
be given upon completion of each chapter.
5) A final exam will be given at the end of the year.
6) Studying is an essential part of the course.
7) Students need to bring German-English dictionaries with them to class.

Various German Literature
Course Objectives:
1) To prepare for the AP German Language Exam by continuing to develop
more advanced vocabulary and grammatical concepts
2) To advanced in speaking fluency and listening comprehension
3) To extend writing skills through compositions on a variety of topics
4) To increase understanding for German culture through discussions of topics
and literature
Course Requirements:
1) Students must be willing to speak German throughout the entire class. It
is imperative for advancement in speaking skills for practice speaking
German as much as possible.
2) It is expected that students will complete all assignments and submit them
on time.
3) Reading and writing assignments will be due weekly. Literature will be
read primarily independently and will be discussed in class. Compositions
will be assigned regularly to be completed outside of class.
4) Students must bring German-English dictionaries with them to class.
5) Quizzes will be given throughout textbook chapter as well as on reading
assignments. Compositions will be graded as quizzes. Tests will be given
upon completion of a textbook chapter or novel.
