13-15 A Resolution to have Designated Smoking Areas
WHEREAS,
The current tobacco use policy hasn’t been updated since 1994; and
WHEREAS,
Students, faculty, staff and visitors can freely smoke outside wherever they want
on campus grounds; and
WHEREAS,
Many people congregate by doors, entrances, windows and vents of buildings
allowing smoke to reenter the building and making it nearly impossible for those
who either don’t smoke or are offended by smoke to enter buildings without
inhaling second hand smoke; and
WHEREAS,
Smokeless tobacco does not affect those passing by, but only the one using it;
and
WHEREAS,
As a public university we should accommodate to everyone’s needs and try to
allow everyone to come here to study; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,
By the Student Government of Wright State University here assembled, that:
(1) Wright State University should update their tobacco use policy to ensure that is
it compliant with all state laws; and
(2) Should put designated smoking areas around campus which includes:
a. Property owned and rented by Wright State;
b. These areas are at least 25 feet from any door, entrance, window,
vent and/or any other thing that can allow smoke to reenter the
building; and
c. These areas are not in direct walks ways to the entrances of buildings;
and
d. These areas are easily visible for smokers and non-smokers with
signage that the area is a designated smoking area with the
boundaries visible.
