CENTRE REGION COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATION
Minutes
June 1, 2011
The meeting of the Centre Region Community Tennis Association was called to order by
President Cheryl Gigante, June 1, 2011 at 7:10 p.m. at the COG Building, Ferguson Township.
Present were: Cheryl Gigante, Bobbie Hayes, Cooper Josephs, Joan Nessler, Carol Oliver,
Laurene Phillips, Ron Smith, and Tony Wilson. Not present: Cheree Jones, Carol McAdams,
Caitlin McLaughlin, and Margie Swoboda.
The minutes of the May 4, 2011 were approved as distributed.
The Block Party of May 14th at Community Courts was discussed. The expenses were about
$500, including the CRCTA bags to each person who bought a raffle ticket. The raffle brought
in over $4,500. A question was raised of the value of giving raffle prizes to each ticket buyer.
The need for gathering prizes earlier was suggested. The date for the 2012 Block Party was
considered, though scheduling around Penn State graduation, prom, and Mother’s Day were
concerns.
Ron Smith will write a letter of appreciation to major contributors to the Block Party for
inclusion in the Centre Daily Times. He will also write letters thanking all the sponsors of the
CRCTA raffle prizes.
The Centre County Community Foundation gives grants for various organizations in Centre
County and should be looked into.
The State College Visitors Bureau needs to be contacted relative the CRCTA’s vision and
mission and working with the SCVB.
How can CRCTA attract more individuals at the Block Party? Should there be a pro coach?
Should it be more for adults? Should there be other, non-tennis activities, such as face paintings,
a Geisinger booth, community children’s organizations, and inviting Zippy the Zebra character
or the Spike mascot?
Should it be a two-day event, though there appeared to be little desire to do so?
Publicity on Twitter Accounts and FaceBook is needed.
It was thought that Spring Creek Park might draw more individuals to a Block Party. The
basketball courts can be used for those under 10 years of age. It was decided not to have kids on
a specific day and adults on another. It should be done as a family event.
CRCTA, 6/1/11 (2)
The Community Court tournament, June 17-19, under Joan Nessler, was discussed. How can we
get more females to participate? Can we get wider publicity? Can we get mixed doubles as well
as individuals, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles? As previously discussed there would be
competition for 10 adult pairings, as well as 18-and-under and 14-and-under for both boys and
girls. This was considered to be too many groups for the number of projected participants.
It was decided to have only four groups with all participants guaranteed at least two matches.
--Men’s singles (A&B)
--Women’s doubles
--14 and under (mixed sexes) singles
The fee for all participants will be $15.
A Tournament poster will be attached to all email addresses of the CRCTA asking that the
posters be placed in appropriate places, such as grocery stores, drug stores, and public bulletin
boards.
The treasure’s report was given by Bobbie Hayes, who stated that there was $3,451 in the bank
with the additional money from the raffle to be deposited.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ronald A. Smith, Secretary
