My rule: I try not to repeat myself. Instead I ask students who are listening to repeat
what was said in class. Students helping students listen, and ask for help in order to
promote understanding.
Activity 1:
Listening Skills and/ or Following Directions from Scholastic
Magazines. We go over each question to discuss the answers and
how or why they missed the answer.
This is not a test to see who the best listeners are. It is used to help students be conscious
that listening and following directions is a learning event that takes time and practice.
Activity 2:
New Classroom rules:
Stop talking-don’t talk
Remove distraction-discuss classroom and outside
distractions
Show that you want to listen-look at the speaker
so the speaker can see your eyes, sit up straight,
face forward, etc. Body Language
Be patient-discuss ‘flag wavers”, students trying to
get teacher off subject, watch and listen to teacher
for verbal and non-verbal cues to the next step of asking questions.
Ask Questions-learn to ask appropriate questions at
the right time when the teacher can stop with an
answer related to what they are studying.
Stop Talking-The most important rule
The rules are simple steps to use for all listening and following directions activities. We
discuss what each rule means by using examples.
Activity 3:
directions activities
Activities from “Learning Works” or other listening/following
Pick a Pooch
Blackout
Scrambled Shapes
Describe putting on coat
Simon Says
These activities focus on different learning styles; the difference between hearing and
listing; the difference between visual and auditory learners or using both: using our five
senses; as we get older rewards come in different forms. A connection is made between
rewards from home, school, and work.
Activity 4:
Wrap Up and go over classroom rules.
