Overview
Western NSW LHD offers a number of different transitional programs including:

Base Hospital Program
•
Mental Health Program
•
Regional Hospitals Program
•
Rural & Remote Program
These programs are designed to give a broad range of clinical experiences in order to equip
newly registered nurses with the necessary skills and confidence required to practice as a
competent registered nurse. There is a strong focus on the special skills required by
registered nurses practicing in rural and regional settings, which enhances and consolidates
your nursing knowledge. All of our programs are available either part-time or fulltime with
some flexibility regarding clinical rotations.

The opportunity to acquire ward management skills in all clinical rotations. In the Base
Hospitals and Regional Hospitals the transitional nurse is rostered on as the second
registered nurse on duty at all times

Tailored Development plans, Clinical Competency Workbook and Professional Portfolio
Formal orientation program to the Western NSW LHD and the Hospital as well as
individual orientation to all clinical rotations

5 Study days though out the year

Locally based nurse educators at all Base Hospitals and Regional Hospitals and Cluster

Rural & Remote Transition to Practice
(RN) Program
Rural and Remote Clinical Rotations
With the flexibility of the Rural and Remote Transition Program you have the opportunity to
undertake one or all of your clinical rotations in a rural and/or remote community.
Transitional RNs can complete their entire 12 month program in one rural or remote facility or
rotate around 2 different facilities. These programs allow newly graduated RNs to develop
advanced practice skills and clinical leadership in a unique clinical and community
environment.

Baradine Multi Purpose Service
Baradine is a small community located 493 kilometres northwest of Sydney and 68 kms
east of Coonamble and the commercial centre of what is known as the Pilliga Scrub.
Baradine MPS is a small rural hospital and health service. It provides emergency services,
acute and subacute medical inpatient services, low and high care residential aged care
services and a range of primary and community health services.

Blayney Multi Purpose Service
Blayney is a small rural town located in the central west of NSW, 40kms from Orange and
38kms from Bathurst. It provides emergency services, acute and subacute medical
inpatient services, low and high care residential aged care services. Health One Blayney is
collocated with the Multipurpose Service providing General Practice, and a range of
primary and community health services within an integrated primary care framework.

Bourke Health Service
The Bourke Health Service provides hospital,
community health and mental health services.
Bourke District Hospital is an acute facility with
35 acute and 8 long stay beds. The acute beds
comprise of 22 medical/surgical, 2 high
dependency, 6 paediatric and 5 maternity beds.
Bourke offers a 24 hour emergency department,
physiotherapy, operating theatre (low risk
elective and emergency surgery performed),
comprehensive onsite pathology and medical
imaging services; palliative care facility and
specialist out patient services.
Air ambulance support is provided from the NSW
Air Ambulance, Dubbo Base. Specialist retrieval
teams are dispatched from Sydney tertiary
hospitals on a needs basis.

Collarenebri
Collarenebri is located in North Western NSW, at the eastern edge of the Walgett LGA. It
is located 40 kms south of the Queensland border. The Collarenebri MPS provides
emergency, acute and sub acute medical inpatient, rehabilitation and palliative care
services and residential aged care services. A range of primary and community health
care services are also provided.

Condobolin
Condobolin is part of the Lachlan Shire, which also includes Lake Cargelligo and
Tottenham and is located on the Lachlan River near the geographical centre of NSW. The
Condobolin Health Service is a small rural hospital and health service providing
emergency, acute and sub acute medical inpatient services, palliative care and post natal
care. A range of primary and community health services are also provided.

Coonabarabran Health Service includes a
30 bed hospital consisting of 22 acute beds.
The Health Service also provides a 24 hour
emergency service as well as resident and
visiting
community
health
service.
Coonabarabran is a friendly country town of
around 3,000 people with 11,000 living in the
region. As the closest gateway to the
majestic Warrumbungle Ranges, it's one of
the best places in NSW to experience nature.
Enjoy bushwalking amongst the spectacular
scenery and ancient volcanic remnants of
Warrumbungle National Park, encounter
wildlife up close and by night, marvel at our
stunning
skies
and

Coonamble Health Service is based
around a 33 bed hospital consisting of 22
acute, one respite and 10 nursing home
type beds. The Health Service also
provides a 24 hour emergency service as
well as resident and visiting community
health services. Nurses on the New
Graduate program also get the opportunity
to work in community health which focuses
on the Primary Health Care Model.

Gilgandra Multi Purpose Service is a 31 bed
facility consisting of 12 Acute beds, 3 Emergency
beds and 19 High Care Nursing Home beds
(includes 1 Respite Bed). The 24 our Emergency
Department is covered by On Call VMO’s. The
new purpose built MPS facility also provided a
broad range of Community and Allied Health
Services including visiting practitioners’ /
clinicians. It also provides an on-site Helepad and
plans for a 2 chair Haemodialysis Unit are
currently underway. Gilgandra has four GP
Practices in the town and the MPS services the
township and surround area which has a
population of 3,800.

Lightning Ridge Rural Health Service comprises a Multi Purpose Service complex
including an inpatient facility of 24 beds to service acute care, aged care, and respite needs.
There are also 4 holding beds for patients being transferred to a referral centre as well as 4
beds for patients with minor conditions. Lightning Ridge is known for its Opal mining and
relaxed way of life. With some 30 plus different nationalities, it is an interesting place to live
and work.

Mudgee Health Service - is a 52 bed hospital. The
health service provides a 24 hour emergency service as
well as resident and visiting community health services.
Acute services include accident and emergency,
obstetrics, medical, high dependency, coronary care and
surgery, ophthalmologic and dental.
Outpatient services are provided for pathology,
physiotherapy and radiology.
On average Mudgee health service is involved in: 706
presentations to the ED, 250 outpatient xrays, 2953
community health consultations and 250 physio patients.
There are over 200 deliveries every year and more than
800 surgical operations. Mudgee is famous for its honey,
wineries, vineyards and gourmet foods. More information

Narromine Health Service is a 29 bed
hospital consisting of 18 acute, 4 Transitional
Aged Care and seven nursing home type beds.
The Health Service also provides a 24 hour
emergency service as well as resident and visiting
community health services, which include
Community Nurse, Aboriginal Health Worker,
Child and Family Health Nurses, Day Care and
Respite Services, Women’s Health, Mental Health
and Drug and Alcohol.
Narromine Shire is both relaxing and full of heartracing activities. Enjoy a relaxing stroll through
the spectacular Swane’s Rose Nursery or
Narromine Iris Farm, throw a line in and try your
luck fishing at various reserves along the majestic
Macquarie River, or relive history with a visit to
the Narromine Aviation Museum.

Nyngan Health Service
Located adjacent to the existing Mick Glennie hostel (aged and dementia hostel), the Health
service is a Multi Purpose Service facility and consists of a 14 bed aged care unit, ambulance
station, emergency ward, staff accommodation, consulting rooms, X-Ray facilities and 6 bed
hospital ward.

Peak Hill Health Service dates back to the
early 1900s. Typifying the building style of that era,
the building has strong architectural appeal and
has gained National Trust recognition. Peak Hill
Health Service is a 10 bed facility consisting of 2
acute, and 8 nursing home type beds. The Health
Service also provides a 24 hour emergency service
as well as resident and visiting community health
services.
Peak Hill enjoys a proud history indelibly linked
with the discovery of gold in 1889. Peak Hill is
situated approximately 50km to the north of
Parkes, with a population of 1,400 people.
Peak Hill lies 442km from Sydney and 364km from
Canberra.

Tottenham
Tottenham is a small village located in central NSW, close
to the actual geographical centre of the state. It is 85km
southwest of Warren and 143 kilometres west of Dubbo.
Tottenham is part of the Lachlan Shire, which also
includes Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo. Tottenham
Multipurpose Service is a small rural hospital and health
service that provides emergency services, acute and
subacute medical inpatient services, post natal care, low
and high care residential aged care services.

Tullamore
Tullamore is a village situated in central western NSW in the Parkes Shire, 85km northeast of
Condobolin in and 119 kilometres west of Dubbo. It seems that a self-important publican by
the name of Tully changed its name from Bullock Creek (after the creek near which the town
stands), to Tullamore. Tullamore Multipurpose Service is a small rural hospital and health
service that provides emergency services, acute and subacute inpatient services, low and
high care residential aged care services.

Warren
Warren is a rural town on the Macquarie River. It is located on the Oxley Highway, 545 km
northwest of Sydney, 80 km west of Gilgandra and 109 kms northwest of Dubbo. Warren
Multipurpose Service is a small rural hospital and health service that provides emergency
services, acute and subacute medical inpatient services, low and high care residential aged
care services, renal dialysis services and a range of primary and community health services.

Walgett Hospital, is a 28 bed hospital
providing acute services including Minor
surgical, general medical, Aged Care, 24 hour
emergency and a 3 bed high dependency
unit. Aged care services include an 8 bed
accredited nursing home area, staffed with
Assistants in Nursing with one Registered
Nurse allocated in charge of the area every
day. Nursing services provide care for
patients in acute and aged areas as well as
some community services including visiting
specialists for ENT, Paediatrics’ and Surgery.
The hospital participates in a trainee enrolled
nurse program and supports 2 trainee
enrolled nurses per annum. Further

Wellington Health Service
Wellington is a large town, the secondoldest west of the Blue Mountains. It is
located in the central west of NSW, 369
km northwest of Sydney and 61kms
southeast of Dubbo. Wellington Health
Service is rural hospital and health
service

inpatient services, post acute surgical
inpatient services, renal dialysis and a
range of primary and community health
services.
It is based around a 29 bed hospital. The health service provides a 24 hour emergency
