Graduates of this qualification will benefit the jewellery industry by ensuring there is a qualified jewellery manufacturing and repair workforce in New Zealand. Typically, this qualification will be gained over a four year period of indentured workplace training supported by distance modules. Graduates of this qualification will be able to operate to industry standards and will meet the requirements for industry trade certification and registration with the Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand (JIRBNZ). Select appropriate materials based on their properties for the construction of jewellery. Design jewellery taking into consideration budget, materials and construction methods. Present jewellery designs by sketch and detailed drawing. Construct items of jewellery and apply various finishing methods used in jewellery manufacture. Repair worn or damaged jewellery or make alterations to jewellery. Engrave and set stones into jewellery and make jewellery castings to specific requirements. The qualification provides a pathway to the: New Zealand Diploma in Jewellery (Level 5) [Ref: 2646] New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5) [Ref: 2636], or above Graduates of this qualification may wish to undertake further tertiary study at diploma or degree level in the field of creative arts or business. Graduates of this qualification will be employed as a qualified version 1 Page 1 of 3 manufacturing jeweller in the manufacturing jewellery industry. Graduates of this qualification may undertake further study to gain work as a jewellery valuer and appraiser. Qualification specifications Qualification award This qualification will be awarded by the JIRBNZ. The formal document certifying the award of this qualification will display the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) logo and will also include the logo of the JIRBNZ. Evidence requirements for assuring consistency The JIRBNZ requires samples of graduates’ practical work to be submitted as evidence for consistency. Minimum standard of achievement and standards for grade endorsements The minimum standard of achievement required for the award of the qualification will be the successful completion of: (i) workplace training that has covered the skills of the JIRBNZ Jewellery Industry Training Record Book (ii) a practical project assessment (iii) the JIRBNZ apprenticeship training requirements (iv) the trade certificate examination There are no grade endorsements for this qualification. Other requirements for the qualification(including regulatory body or legislative requirements) Applicants to programmes of study leading to the award of this qualification must have 42 credits at Level 1 or above from the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS), or equivalent skills and/or knowledge. General conditions for the programme leading to the qualification General conditions for programme The programme design, including assessment, must reflect the interconnectedness of graduate outcomes and the norms of jewellery industry practices. The programme of learning contains a combination of on-job training and distance modules, and is structured in four stages from induction through to stage 4. Graduates must be indentured and employed in workplace training in order to complete this qualification. Workplaces offering training leading to this qualification must meet the “suitability to train” requirements outlined in the JIRBNZ Apprenticeship Training Requirements. Credits 36 4 Present jewellery designs by sketch and detailed drawing. Credits 12 5 Construct items of jewellery and apply various finishing methods used in jewellery manufacture. This outcome must be achieved in a workplace. Must be able to create working drawings to a standard suitable for presentation. This outcome must be achieved in a workplace. Credits 72 6 Repair worn or damaged jewellery or make alterations to jewellery. This outcome must be achieved in a workplace. Credits 48 7 Engrave and set stones into jewellery and make jewellery castings to specific requirements. This outcome can be covered through off job training or distance learning if not covered via workplace training.
