Fanning the Flame Sponsored Walk – MINI WALK ROUTE (11/2 Miles)
Notes: This route is mostly across The Forest on gravel paths. It goes up to Setley Pond (‘the lake’ ) round and
back. You can extend your walk by doing extra laps of Setley Pond if you feel energetic!
Points of local
interest :
Setley Pond was
formed in 1941
when gravel was
extracted for the
construction of a
wartime runway
at Stoney Cross in
the New Forest.
It is used from
time to time to sail
model boats.
To the north of
Setley Pond is an
Bronze Age
barrow (marked
on the map as a
Tumulus.

1.
Leave The Priory through the gate and turn right onto the road. Take care to watch for cars
since there is no pavement for this short stretch.
2.
Pass several houses on the right. As you pass a car park in the trees on the left look out for
and take a gravel path on the right onto the forest heath. Follow this path as it climbs up hill
and cross the bridge over the railway.
3.
Carry straight-on, taking the path that passes a house on the right. Shortly after the house
take the gravel path that bears left. Continue on this path until you reach Setley Pond.
4.
Circle the pond. Consider doing extra circuits of Setley Pond. For each extra circuit you can
add ¼ mile to the length of your walk.
5.
To return to The Priory retrace your steps: along the gravel path from the south end of the
pond to the bridge over the railway. Then onwards along the path and downhill through the
heath until you reach the road.
6.
Turn left onto the road and retrace your steps the short distance to St Dominic’s Priory.
