running across the ice, embarking on a harrowing adventure to survive in the brutal wilderness.

communities in the world. Their roots go back to the Anabaptist movement in Central Europe in
the 16th century. They faced persecution in various locations in Europe, and on two occasions
abandoned community of goods, which is a cornerstone of their biblical faith. But they came
back to communal life both times. In the 1870s, a couple of hundred Hutterites immigrated to
the United States and established three colonies. Today, they number over 30,000 and live in
over 400 colonies. The film depicts their way of life, emphasizing religion, schools, economic

Description: In highland society, status is earned by giving things away rather than acquiring
them, and a moka is the single-most important ceremony. Ongka’s motives in planning his big
moka are to gain influence over rivals and to win a sort of immortality for himself and his tribe
in a changing world. But things don’t go as planne, and Ongka’s painstaking preparations are
threatened by accusations of sorcery and even the threat of war.
Kayapo: Indians of the Brazilian Rainforest (Disappearing World Series)
Description: The film contrasts the reactions of two groups of Kayapo to outside influences. The
Kapot have opposed contact and resisted both non-indigenous Brazilian settlers and gold miners.
They are shown undertaking a hunting trek and preparing for a special mining ritual. The
Gorotire, by contrast, were invaded by gold miners but were eventually able to force the miners
to pay commission, amounting to about two million dollars per year. They are now learning to
cope with the money, both with the problems it brings and the power it gives.
