Additional Information: He was the first british civilian who left Trinidad to join
Kitchener's Army, having sailed on ss Oruba on 29/9/1914. Cpl in the 1st London
Scottish Regt and fought at Loos, where half of his battalion was lost and all but nine
of his platoon were killed. He fought at Hulluch where half of the Brigade was lost.
He also fought at Vermelles. He was killed by a shot through the head at the battle of
the Somme, in the 3rd german trench, where the regt advanced through a triple
barrage of fire. Fifteen minutes afterwards those that were left were ordered to retire.
The body was never recovered. FYB1919 Grave: Pier and Face 9 C and 13 C.

and Mentioned five times in the Orders of the Day for bravery. He was killed

in battle of St Eloi, France. On the call for volunteers by the brigade Major to capture
a crater 70 yds off from which the enemy was giving much trouble, he took 4 of his
men and went with the result that 4 officers and 65 men surrendered. On his return
and while assembling his men after the incident he was shot through the heart. It is
reported that his name has been sent in for a posthumous VC (No record of this or of
any medals awarded found). He is buried at Vernerale. FYB1919 Grave: I. D. 20.

and was gazetted to the 10th and then 1st and 2nd battalions, West Yorkshire Regt.
He was seriously wounded at Ypres in Oct 1916. In Aug 1917 he joined the Indian
Army, and had only been a few months at Jhelum, India, when he died of sickness
after a brief illness at the Station Hospital, Landour, India on 5 Jun 1918. FYB1919

and afterwards of Interpreter to the Portuguese Expeditionary Force. He was killed
by a shell, whilst bravely trying to find shelter for civilians during the bombardment of
a village some distance behind the line, on 4 Feb 1918. He was awarded the War

personal risk, he found important papers belonging to the Col of the Cheshires who
had been killed when a certain position was retaken by the germans. For this he was
highly commended by his superior officers. He was killed by a sniper after having

the 48th Canadian Highlanders soon after. Left with the 1st CEF on 3 Oct., arrived in
England 14 Oct, left for France 12 Feb, went into the trenches early in March and
was wounded and gassed at the second battle of Ypres on 22 Apr 1915. Did not
recover from gas effects until more than a year later when he was again passed for
active service. He went through the terrible fighting, in which the Canadians played
so great a part, all through April 1917 and on May 1st, Sgt Wilson, as he then was,

Army, obtaining a commission in the 4th Batt., Royal Warwickshire Regt.. After a few
months training he secured a transfer to the RFC, and was ultimately to join the
famous "Ball's Sqn" with which he was flying when Capt ball was killed. "Jack"
knaggs showed all that daring and indifference to danger which made Ball the
airman he was and he was considered one of the most intrepid and experienced
aviators. On Mar 16th, 1918, his fatal day, he had done extraordinarily well in a fight
with enemy scouts and was gallantly attacking a 2-seater when his machine, being
hit in a vital spot, was seen to crumple up and fall to earth. FYB1919.

ex H.M.T. "Magdalena". On arrival in England he was attached to the 8th Batt of the
BWIR and saw service first in France where during the Ypres-Paschaendale
operations in 1917 he stood the shellfire with astonishing coolness, and as a hen

gathers her brood, so he got his men safely out of the curtain of shellfire. Up to within
3 weeks of his death, he was to all appearances in the full bloom of health and
carried himself with an aplomb which earned the admiration of all the men. He later
saw service in Italy. Died of pneumonia after a short illness contracted in the later
