The diving survey NAUTICA has been scheduled to support an ODP proposal to drill in the
Caribbean Region. Unfortunately this proposal has not been accepted. Except one dive, more
than 5000 m deep in the Venezuela Basin and south of Puerto Rico, all the dives have been
performed on the Beata Ridge. This ridge extends from Hispaniola to South America and
separates the Venezuela Basin to the East and the Colombia Basin to the West. This ridge is
made of volcanic rocks that have been formed during a large igneous Cretaceous event. The
Beata Ridge has been drilled by three DSDP holes that sample Cretaceous basalts (Santonian,
85-83 Ma). However, the rocks collected during the diving survey are dolerites and gabbros. It
means that these intrusive rocks have been former deeper in the crust than the extrusive basalts
that were erupted at the surface of the sea floor. Moreover, the date obtained by Ar40/ar39
technique are Campanian (81-75 Ma) in age and therefore are younger than the basalts
sampled by the DSDO holes. It is suggested than the basalts and dolerites are been emplaced
as sills in a basaltic plateau and the formation of this thick plateau occurred during 20 Ma (94-75
Ma). In the northern part of the Beata Ridge an uplift is recorded by a prominent uplift during the
Late cretaceous and the formation of a shallow carbonate platform during the Paleocene-Eocene
that subsided at more than 3 km This collapse is probably connected to a rifting event..
