SUMMERHILL STUD
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Our aim at Summerhill Stud is to breed top class stock. Mares with poor conformation or known
diseases will not be accepted. The Stud reserves the right to refuse any mare arriving in poor condition
or deemed to be unfit for breeding.
In the interest of all concerned the Stud insists that all mares falling into one of the following categories
have a biopsy to ascertain the condition of the mare’s uterus lining. This will enable any necessary
treatment to take place before a mare comes to the Stud. A biopsy is neither expensive nor painful.
1. Maiden mares over the age of 12 years.
2. Mares who are not in foal and who do not cycle regularly.
3. Mares who have been previously covered but did not conceive, have
reabsorbed or aborted.
It is extremely expensive for the mare owner to have their mare away at Stud all summer and for her
not to be in foal. The majority of these mares would conceive if the necessary treatment were
administered prior to the covering season.
Booking fee. This is due when the nomination form is completed and returned to the Stud. The
booking fee is not refundable but will be deducted from your final invoice.
Stud fees. The stud fee is due at the time of service. Visiting mares may not be removed until all stud
fees and keep fees due to the stud are settled.
If the stud shall give notice that a visiting mare and/or foal should be removed from the stud for any
reason whatsoever, and the owner fail to do so within a period of one (1) month from the date of such
notice, then the stud shall be entitled to sell the visiting mare and/or foal and out of the proceeds of the
sale defray the costs of the Stud’s fees, keep fees and livery for the period between the giving of such
notice and the sale of the mare and/or foal and the owner hereby appoints the Stud its agents for the
purpose of such a sale.
Covering certificates. All certificates will be issued to the owner after a positive pregnancy diagnosis
at the end of the covering season.
Concessions. Mares who have achieved a certain level in competition, or have bred a significant
number of successful offspring, may be eligible for a concession at the Studs discretion.
Multiple Nominations. Owners who wish to send more than one mare in the same covering season
may be eligible for a discount at the Studs discretion.
Swabs. All mares must have a veterinary certificate stating that the mare is fit for breeding and has had
at least one cervical swab taken during the current breeding season that failed to grow any pathogenic
organisms in culture.
Shoes. It is requested that all mares be sent unshod but with their feet freshly trimmed. Mares with
brittle feet may be shod in front by prior arrangement with the Stud.
Nomination Forms. The nomination form must be completed in full. This is important, as the Stud
must know the mare’s history and registration details (if applicable).
Worming. All mares will be wormed on arrival at the Stud and they will be wormed every four to six
weeks. Owners will be charged for this service.
