TC12A Syllabus/ Overview

Course Description: Students will be given opportunities to improve their reading
comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling. Students will use the 4 square writing
processes to complete a research paper as part of the graduation requirements, and
present the information to the class. Students will update their resumes, references,
practice for interview skills, and practice public speaking skills. English 12A meets for one
hour per day for one trimester.
Instructional Philosophy: Students will be given a variety of assignments and projects.
Students are expected to participate and put forth their best effort on all assignments and
projects. Some activities will require the student to work in groups, but many assignment
need to be completed individually.

 Practice public speaking
Major Course assignment and Projects:
Research Paper—to prepare for the research paper, the students will be
involve in many English activities such as paraphrasing, outlining, note-taking,
and organizing information. Students will choose a person, place, event or
genre from a given list and prepare a research paper. Finally, the students will
be expected to orally present their research paper.
Resume—students will revise their professional resume and reference list.
Daily/Weekly Course Assignments:
Read Aloud— Students will be expected to independently read a novel.
Students will share passages with the class weekly and will also participate in
reading conferences with the instructor.
Journal: Students will complete journal entries weekly or as assigned by the
instructor
Word of the Day: Students will be given a new vocabulary word each day.
There will be weekly quizzes on vocabulary. Students will also be required to
bring in daily connections for vocabulary words.
Course assessment Plan: Grades will be based on a total point system. To
determine students grade, divide the points you have earned by the total
points possible.

Late Work Policy:
 1 day late= minus a letter grade
 2 days late= ½ the points
 3 days late= 0%

Daily Procedures
Before Entering- come prepared to class- I.D., agenda and writing utensil.
Entering – be on time, grab folder/binder and book and be seated.
Tardy – if you are tardy, sign the Tardy Form on student table and quietly join
class- first and second tardy is a warning and third is a referral.
Bell Ringer Activity- read or journal for the first 15 minutes of class, complete
‘Word of the Day’ activity and/or complete any miscellaneous review
activity assigned.
Daily Lesson- follow directions and Learning Target to complete lesson for the
day.
Need to Leave Seat - raise your hand.
Need to Leave the Room- come prepared to stay, must have agenda and I.D. to
leave and must use Sign-Out Sheet when leaving and returning to class.
Restroom- try to go before class (let me know, if possible) or go during down time.
If using the restroom becomes habitual during this class period, a phone call
home will be made.
Pre-Dismissal – return folders and books and return to seat until dismissed.
Dismissal- you will be dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.
Absent- see teacher upon return; you will have equal number of days absent to
complete work.
Behavior Log- all unnecessary and disruptive behaviors will be logged and
documented according to classroom and school wide behavior plan.
