The Annual Jimmy Jones-Marist High School Homecoming Car Show Saturday, October
25, 2011.
We showed up about 8:00 AM for coffee and bagels, and hung out inside to stay warm! I
saw about twenty very nice classics there. As usual, Martina’s and Frank’s 1964 Eldorado
convertible took an award (2nd Place, Peoples’ Choice). The winner? A 1935 Auburn Boat
Tail Speedster in black! Also attending from the Peach State Cadillac & LaSalle Club,
from left in the photo, were: Jimmy Jones (in hoodie – it was COLD!), Stan Tucker, Sandy
Partridge, Martina Butler, Doug Bailey, Frank Butler, Sandy’s friend Doug, and Bob
Hendershott (who is not always this amused). Not pictured: Bill Greene drove his red ’69
Mach I 351 cid Mustang. Richard Hickok made an appearance, and Jerry Peterson drove
his light mint green colored ’69 Lincoln Mark III. Another Great success Jimmy!
Saturday, October 25, Lake Arrowhead Cruise In!
Immediately after the Marist Car Show, five of us caravanned up I-575 to Waleska for the
Lake Arrowhead Cruise-In. Stan led on in the Godfather, followed by Bill in the Mustang.
Jimmy, whose ’64 T-Bird had a fit of silence at the gas station but eventually started, was
ahead of Doug in the Turk. Bob, in the ’66 Eldo, made sure no one got lost. Bob has not yet
named that Eldorado. (Come on, Bob!) Cruising through heavy freeway traffic, we looked
to our left. And Voila! It’s Forrest Ward and Maria in the ’56 they call “The Bismarck,”
(she calls it Minerva for some reason…) We made the trek through the countryside,
following a not-too-trustworthy GPS, but we did finally make it. The weather was sunny
and cool – perfect mountain air.
At the show we met up with Vince and Karen Haaland in Ray’s black and yeller
HUPPMOBILE(!). That took a prize for sure. Larry and Melodie Reece drove that
pristine, low-milage ’51 Series 61. Ray and Dottie Diodati looked MAH-velous in the ’57
Cadillac coupe (which also got a favorable nod from the crowd). Eventually, Mike and
Dianne Dougherty cruised up in their ’63 sedan. (Where’s the hearse, Mike?) Kevin
Garrison showed off his brand-spanking new, green ’55 Fleetwood, which was veddy veddy
classy. Lee Dunn’s ’57 sedan took a crowd pleaser award at the show, and Mary Jean
Dunn could be seen behind the wheel of her red Datsun sportster. Also showing their
support were Paul and Gloria West, and Robert Kipping (who drove the Porsche coupe).
Debbie Tucker helped Mary Jean and Donna at registrations. Jack Hurley kept busy
chauffeuring dozens of folks back and forth between the show and the clubhouse, where we
found our lunches to be superb. We also met two prospective members: Ron Benneche and
Annette Washington in a ’62 Coupe Deville, and Mac Kemp in a black ’09 CTS-V. Both
very nice cars! That makes it 24 members in attendance by my count.
Peach State CLC Membership Appreciation Cookout Saturday October 25th!
By about 3:30 those of us who went to Marist had already had a good day of Cadillacin’ in,
with the closing of the RIDES of Lake Arrowhead. But now it was time for the Peach State
CLC membership appreciation cookout! We all headed for the Dunns and Hurleys lakeside
chateaus. Checked out the cars, including that cool Jaguar 140 in the basement, and Lee’s
racks of models. We told lies about all the great cars we had owned, and immersed
ourselves in the sunshine.
What a magnificent time we always have at the Dunns! We hung out a while, sipping tea,
wine and beer. The club bought the fixins, but the Dunns and their crew (Donna, Debbie,
Melodie, Dianne, Gloria, and Dottie – who have I left out?) did the preparin’! We had
awesome ribs on the grill, with wonderful sides, and the desserts were fantastic. Thanks,
Lee and Mary Jean, you are truly the best!
One car by one, we left as evening wound down into darkness. Home by 9:00 PM, and a 1213 hour day! Another great club activity in the books.
If you have not joined us for a members’ appreciation cookout, you need to make that a
priority for the next one. No kidding. See you at the upcoming Cadillac Clinic (Nov 13th) or
the Junk Yard Tour (Nov 19th) or no later than the Christmas Party (Dec 3rd)!
