EQUINE CLUB MEETING MINUTES – Jan. 4th, ‘07 Trainer’s Panel o Attendance: Kyle estimates 40 ppl, incl. 1 non-member (34ppl + the exec) o Trainers confirmed: Linda Hale, Cathy Wilcox-Chapman(Western trainer), Ian Maddox (used to be assistant trainer –Thoroughbred), dressage + jumper need to be confirmed A back-up dressage person from Dr. Sheard also available o Our club cards should be ready on Monday!! so we can also make use of those along with the thank you gifts (horse treats + Tim Horton’s gift cards) o Dr. Stone = confirmed The panelists will introduce themselves, but she would like a list of back-up questions just in case Questions: 1) What is the number one quality that you look for in your vet? 2) Do you think there is there still a gender stigma in the industry? 3) How important do you feel it is that your vet knows the blood lines in the field you work in? 4) How much do you expect your vet to know about your discipline/ how much of an advantage is it if they know it well? 5) How much advice on training do you allow your vets to give/ do they give? 6) What information do you find your vet to be the least informed/trained about? 7) How do you feel about the veterinary industry shifting towards shared time/less working hours? 8) How much freedom, in terms of treatments, do vets give trainers? What do you treat on your own? 9) Would you hire a new grad? What is the best way for a new grad to get established? How do you pick your vet? Do you have any advice for a new grad? 10) What would you like to see changed in the industry? 11) What do you feel is your vet’s greatest weakness? 12) What do you like in your vet/ what do you get the most out of your relationship with your vet?(Support, advice, care?) 13)Is your vet expected to know how your horse ran the night before? Or how they did at a show? Is he/she expected to be up on these types of things? TO DO: - Colleen: o write a blurb, like the one for trainers panel, to give to those calling practitioners in the area, so that the message is unified o confirm that Dr. Frost can attent - Amanda: confirm that Dr. Springett can attend - Jordan: is Dr. Hennessey confirmed?? - Beth: o email Allison Moore to get her to send the info out on the listserv; get practitioners to RSVP to Stephanie o go to the CVO website and get a list of practitioners that are within 1 hour from here (bordering and including= Milton, Hamilton, Stratford, Fergus), and distribute this list among the exec for contacting + inviting - Kyle: nametags - Marisa + Kyle: table set up and organization - Christina: program - Everyone o remember to bring in centerpieces o start thinking about writing bios for the panelist you know best Talks this semester o Pfizer business talk The business club would like to do a talk that includes us, to cover the large animal side of things TO DO: Colleen and Amanda will speak with Laura concerning this o Cruz physiotherapy/treatment talk Rehabilitation talk o Lameness short course talks o Emerg preparedness talk o Foal nutrition talk Colleen was emailed over Christmas by Grober to see if we were interested in them giving a talk this semester If we were to agree we would need to get clear information on what they will talk about: ie all aspects of foal nutrition vs. only their product However, we already have 6 talks this semester…perhaps next fall Wound Management Talk: - Discussion: Do we want to postpone it to the fall semester since we have a lot of talks this semester? Would this disappoint Dr. Trout, or reflect badly on us?? It would be a useful talk even for small animal Wound management would likely be well received + interesting for 1st years - Vote results: to try to fit it in anyhow TO DO: o Beth: email Dr. Trout to see which day in either late January or early February would work best for him, check the schedules and get back to Colleen so that she can book a Semester Meeting: - Date = Monday, Jan. 14th @ lunch - A general meeting with a case report presented as well TO DO: o Marisa: send out email to the club o Colleen: book the room o We need to get a case report speaker (an intern or resident – Andressa or Luis?)
