ACQUISITION LESSON PLAN for

Grade K-1

Unit: During Reading

Topic: Decoding Strategies – Lesson 1 of 5

Concept: Word Beginnings and Picture Clues

Essential Question:

How can I use the beginning of a word and the picture to help me when I read?

Activating Strategy:

Picture Splash:

Select a Level 1 or a Level 2 book. Show the book cover and read the title of the text.

Ask: What might this book be about?

Carousel Brainstorming:

Ask each student to give an answer to this question:

What words might be used in this book? As each word is suggested, the teacher will draw a picture representing the word on chart paper or a white board. The teacher will ask the student what letter(s) he/she would expect to see at the beginning of the word. The teacher will write the initial letter(s) under the picture.

Accelerating/Previewing: (Key Vocabulary) words, pictures, beginning letter a chart focusing on the steps of this strategy (attached)

Teaching Strategies:

Direct Teaching:

Classroom teacher will show a picture from the selected book with the target word covered (for ease in using this procedure, you may need to use two sticky notes. One will cover the whole word, with the exception of the initial letter(s). The other should cover the initial letter.) The teacher will give three words that could be used on that page, including the word in the text that the picture supports.

Example: Word Choices: ice cream, bowl, scoop

Teacher reveals the initial letter(s) in the targeted word. Following the steps on the chart, the teacher will think aloud to show how to use the initial letter(s) to get his/her mouth ready (say the first sound). Teacher will use the initial letter(s) and the picture to choose the correct word. Model additional pages as needed.

Shared Demonstration:

Show another picture from the text with the targeted word covered. The teacher will say three words that could appear on the page. Reveal the first letter. The teacher asks a student to refer to the chart and explain how he/she would look at the beginning letter and get his/her mouth ready. Then the student will check the picture and choose the correct word. Continue with additional pages as needed.

Distributed Guided Practice:

Ask students to work with a partner on a specific picture from the book. The teacher will give three words that could appear on the page. Teacher reveals the first letter. Refer to the chart to remind students what to do next.

Think Pair Share:

Students decide on the correct response with their partner. Students share their choices and reasons with the group.

The teacher asks students to turn to the next picture. The teacher asks:

What words could be used to describe this picture? Record words.

Ask students to reveal the first letter(s) of the targeted word. Students decide on the correct response with their partner. Students share their results with the group.

Summarizing Strategy:

Whisper out the Door:

Ask the question: When you are reading and you come to a tricky word, what are you going to do?

Each student whispers the answer to the teacher as he/she walks out the door. (Look at the beginning letter and get my mouth ready. Then check the

picture.)
