Text: Metas Comunicativas para Negocios with Metas vocabulary cards
Course Description:
The main objectives of this course are: (1) to supply the student with a general
knowledge of business terminology and concepts applicable to an international business
environment; (2) to promote an understanding of differences in cultural patterns within
US and Hispanic business settings; and (3) to provide numerous opportunities for
students to gain confidence in their oral Spanish skills in a variety of business scenarios.
The course is designed to develop listening comprehension and oral skill at an advanced
level.

Tests: You will have three major tests. These tests include 1) a listening and
comprehension part and 2) a written part.
Quizzes: The dates for the vocabulary quizzes are given in the course schedule. The
dates for the verb quizzes are not given since they are surprise quizzes. Therefore,
students must be prepared at any time for a verb quiz.
Conversaciones: This will involve a partner situation. Students will be required to
prepare “fichas” (vocabulary index cards) as an aid for this speaking activity. The
instructor will provide specific instructions before starting the first “conversaciones”
activity.
Final project: The final project will require 1) an oral part and 2) a written part. The
instructor will provide more specific instructions about this project by the third week of
classes.

Attendance/participation:
Due to the nature of the class, the emphasis on class discussions, activities and the pace
of the course, attendance and participation are mandatory. Students are required to come
prepared each day and to complete assignments on time in order to participate in class.
After the first absence, the student loses 1 point for each day missed. There is no makeup for points lost. Also, there are no make-ups for missed assignments, tests, quizzes and
term projects.
*Note: At the beginning of the semester, students with disabilities who need special
accommodations should notify the instructor by presenting a letter prepared by the
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Office. To ensure that the most appropriate
accommodations can be provided, students should contact the SSD Office at 571-6259 or
471-4641 TTY.
**Note: Students who violate University rules on scholastic dishonesty are subject to
disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and/or dismissal
from The University. Since such dishonesty harms the individual, all the students and the
integrity of The University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.
