Give them the following as a starting point for their research and deductions:

Descendants of the first European settlers from Britain, Germany and
Scandinavia (WASPs) usually had the best jobs, earned the most money and
had the greatest political power in America.

Native American Indians originally lived across America, but from about 1850
to 1890 they were forced off their land by the new settlers.

Black Americans were originally from Africa, brought to America in the 18th
and 19th centuries and forced to work as slaves. By 1920, 11 million black
people lived in America.

In the late 19th century, many Jews and Catholics came to America from
Russia, Poland and Italy.

Hispanic and Latino immigrants descended originally from Spain or countries
formerly ruled by Spain. There have been Hispanic immigrants in America
since the 16th century.

Asian immigrants from the continent of Asia first came to America in the 18th
century. By the mid 19th century, the British and Spanish brought over slaves
from China, India and the Philippines.
