Interdepartmental Centre of Women’s Studies
(five Departments refer to this structure: Sociology and Political Science, Political
Economy, Linguistics, Philosophy, Educational Science).
12 people are working with the Centre:
- 4 full time teachers (full and associated professors)
- 5 PhD students
- 2 Technical staff
- 2 Junior researchers
The Centre is an institutional structure of the University of Calabria It was officially
recognized in 1997. At present the Centre includes five Departments:
Sociology, Philosophy, Political Economy, Linguistics, Education Science.
It is also open to associations, organizations, individuals outside the institution as:
- Women's Documentation Centre and Regional Library “Nosside”
- CIDI (Italian Centre of Democratic Teachers - in the secondary school)
- Centre against Violence on Women “Roberta Lanzino”.
The Centre strongly supported the rising of the local coordination of the Italian
Network “Up to 30 something-Next Genderation”.
ACTIVITIES
The Centre offers:
1) W&GS courses, lectures, seminars in Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy.
Courses (undergraduate level) have given by two full professors (Sociology of Change,
Cultural Anthropology), three Associated professors (Political Science, Philosophy,
Linguistics), supported by five postgraduate or PhD students.

Together with the Sportelllo per le Pari Opportunità and the Faculty of Political
Sciences, the Centre is involved in the planning and implementation of the project
“Women, Politics and Institutions”, funded by the Ministry of Equal Opportunity. Since
October 2004 to January 2005, a vocational courses on the topic is organized at the
University, involving 100 women of different ages and disciplinary fields.
2) Local, national, international researches.
A research group of young women refers to the Centre. They are trained in qualitative
and quantitative research methodologies.
The Centre is particularly involved in researches on young women and work, women
and education, women and violence.
EUROPEAN EXPERIENCES
The Centre was responsible in the last past years for the following researches, funded by
EU:
“The School of Politics ‘Hannah Arendt’ – Women’s Presence in the Public
Sphere”

It is a Daphne project on the institution of a school of politics through theoretical
exchange between European countries, seminars and an empirical research on good
practices.
Project “EWSI – Employment and Women’s Studies: the Impact of Women’s
Studies Training on Women’s Employment in Europe”

The project seeks to collect systematically quantitative and qualitative scientific data on
women who have undergone Women’s Studies training in order to understand the
impact of that training on their employment and in order to provide policy
recommendations regarding the training and employment of women.

3) Services
Starting on May 1999 the Interdepartmental Centre of Women's Studies promoted a
“Centre for the Quality of Life” in the Campus of the University.
This Centre offer researches and monitoring on:
- quality of gender relations inside the University
- harassment, violence, safeness;
- quality of the relations between students, staff members, teachers; quality of the
environmental context.
4) Working Groups
Young Women and Higher Education in Southern Italy. The case-study of the University of Calabria
The group produced a qualitative and quantitative research on female students, their
choices and motivations, difficulties encountered during their course of study
Women in Teaching and administrative staff
The group produced a report on women working placing, women career difficulties,
personal motivations and choices, difficulties encountered, their relationship with the
working environment.
Women places and quality of life in the Campus
The group produced a report on the different relationships women and man have with
university spaces and places. Particular attention has been devoted on quality of life and
security in the campus.
Teaching and curricula
Aim of the group is the research of new teaching methods in the field of Women’s
Studies and gender differences.
Communication
The group is working on the implementation of new ICT’s tools, as the Centre web site.
Pilot project on the relationship between University staff and students
The research group produced a report on the 3 components of the University, stressing
three key factors: involvement, responsibility and professionalism. A second report
emphasized teaching staff and students’ point of wiev on services supply.
Women, society and politics
The project aim is to analyze young high school students imaginary on the relationship
between women and politics.
Women and life-time in Cosenza
The group produced a report on the relationship between women and their life-time
(time for themselves, working time and care time).
