CLU3M1- Summative Task “CRIME AND PUNISHMENT”
Throughout this course, you will be exploring the proper legal procedures and practices for a
variety of situations (arrest procedures, jury selection etc.) related to criminal and civil law.
Your task is to create a legally accurate Canadian episode of “Crime and Punishment”. Each
member of your group will create a scene which illustrates your chosen criminal or civil law topic.
You will be responsible for coming up with the concept for the episode, researching Canadian law,
writing the script, producing, directing and starring in video segments all while making sure that it is
legally accurate.
For this project you will be working in groups of 4-5 students. Each member of the group is
responsible for completing one of the following scenes. Please note, your group can use its
discretion with regards to scene selection. The following are ideas for scenes, that you may use, or
you may change.
For example: Scenes could include:
Crime re-enactment
-Must be a crime listed in the Canadian Criminal Code
-For the purpose of creating a mystery, the crime can be re-enacted several times with different
perpetrators
Crime Scene Investigation
-Must demonstrate proper evidence collection and processing procedures
-Evidence collected should appear in the courtroom scene
-Improper evidence handling/’bad’ evidence can be used to further the story
Courtroom Scene
-Must demonstrate a proper understanding of courtroom procedures
-Should incorporate evidence/testimony from the Crime Scene script and/or the questioning of the
suspect, all court actors/players should be present (bailiff, judge, court recorder, jury if applicable)
Jury Deliberation and or Sentencing and or Subject Questioning
-Must demonstrate proper procedures for the chosen topic
-Should use information from previous scripts to maintain consistency
-Can violate proper rules IF it is part of the storyline
Civil Trial
-Must demonstrate a proper understanding of civil law procedures-plaintiff, defendant- appropriate
remedies- balance of probabilities etc.
Be as creative as you can be in your story telling! Just remember, you need to create a
complete storyline, so all scenes necessary to do so must be included. You don’t want your
audience left at the end confused
Video Length-Should be between 25-35 minutes in length
