Research Summary
Early research work focused on the optical properties of lanthanide (rare earth) ions in solids. Key
areas of research involved the development of new x-ray storage phosphors and insight into the
storage mechanism (Ph.D work), probing defect dynamics by high-resolution laser spectroscopy
(post-doctoral research), the electron-phonon coupling of optical transitions of lanthanides and
transition metal ions and the luminescence of divalent lanthanides. Since the appointment as a
professor of Solid State Chemistry two main research fields are being explored:
VUV Spectroscopy of Lanthanides and Quantum Cutting
In order to design new luminescent materials (phosphors) for mercury free fluorescent tubes and
plasma display panels, phosphors are required that convert one high energy vacuum ultraviolet
(VUV) photon into two visible photons (a process called “quantum cutting”). The research in this
area involves both a search for efficient quantum cutters and fundamental research on the VUV
luminescence of lanthanide ions, up until ten years ago an unexplored area of research. An
important breakthrough was the demonstration of a 190% quantum efficiency through
downconversion in the Gd-Eu couple. On the fundamental side, the famous Dieke diagrams, showing
the 4fn energy level structure of trivalent lanthanides up to 40 000 cm -1, have been extended to
65000 cm-1. The VUV spectroscopy involved experimental work at the DESY synchrotron in
Hamburg. High resolution VUV spectroscopy on the 4f n→4fn-15d (fd) transitions resulted in a model
to calculate the observed energy fd-level structure. Energy level calculations involve a close
cooperation with prof. M. Reid (New Zealand) and prof. G. Burdick (USA). Recent research involves
quantum cutting with lanthanides to increase the efficiency of solar cells and luminescence of
lanthanides doped into nanocrystals.

Optical properties of Quantum Dots
Semiconductor nanoparticles of sizes smaller than the exciton Bohr radius show quantum size
effects. As a result of the confinement of the charge carriers (electrons in the conduction band
and/or holes in the valence band) the absorption edge shifts to higher energies as the size of the
nanocrystals decreases and at the edges of the bands discrete levels develop (instead of the
continuum of levels observed for bulk semiconductors). The most widely studied quantum dots are
II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals where for example for CdSe the luminescence is observed to shift
from the red to the blue as the particle size decreases from 6 nm to 1.5 nm. The main questions
addressed in this area involve the synthesis of efficiently luminescing quantum dots, insight in the
relation between optical properties and size and the use of quantum dots to resolve problems in
chemistry, physics and biology. Some main results are the development of size selective photoetching (to control the particle size with the color of light), luminescence temperature antiquenching (providing insight in the role of the surface), luminescence of quantum dots doped with
luminescing ions, applying quantum dots to probe the relation between the spontaneous decay rate
and the refractive index and the use of paramagnetic (double) resonance techniques to probe the
wavefunctions of charge carriers in quantum dots (with prof. Schmidt in Leiden). Recent research
will involves doped quantum dots, bio-labeling with quantum dots, NIR-emitting quantum dots and
luminescence from metal nano-clusters.
