Cleopatra
Although Egypt has had lots of well-known kings and pharaohs, probably the
most famous sovereign in Ancient Egypt was, in fact, a woman: the legendary
Queen Cleopatra.
Cleopatra was born in Alexandria in 69 B.C. Cleopatra
and her family were not Egyptian, but Macedonian.
Cleopatra would become the first ruler of her family
who could actually speak the Egyptian language. She
probably spoke other seven or eight languages, too,
including Latin and Greek, and was a particularly
intelligent and cultivated woman.
Following the ancient Egyptian tradition, Queen
Cleopatra of Egypt married her 12 year old brother
Ptolemy and this way became the real ruler of Egypt.
After three years, she was exiled and escaped to Syria.
She was only about 17 years old at the time she met
Julius Caesar, apparently wrapped inside a rug. Caesar
took her side against Ptolemy and Cleopatra became
the sole ruler of Egypt. They had a scandalous affair and a son in common not
long before Caesar was murdered.
Mark Antony ordered Cleopatra back to Rome for questioning. Queen Cleopatra
then seduced Mark Antony as well. However, Mark Antony was killed in war
and Octavian became the new emperor of Rome, invading Egypt, Cleopatra
then committed suicide by letting a snake bite her.
Cleopatra has inspired films, paintings and legends and all sorts, and has been
the protagonist of a good number of theatre plays including William
Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, which tells the queen's tragic end.
