FIRE PRECAUTIONARY PROCEDURES
Site Manager - responsibilities
1.
Ensure all rooms and doors are closed at the end of the day particularly after lettings
sessions, when these occur.
2.
That all electric siren points are tested on a regular basis. Break-glasses checked. it
is good practice to employ a different call point each time on a rota basis, thereby
testing each sounder in turn as well as the alarm system. Exact time schedule this is
usually done weekly and logged. This is scheduled to be completed each Tuesday at
7.00am.
3.
All corridors and emergency exits must be kept clear of furniture and any other
obstacles, including cleaning machines etc.
4.
All Fire extinguishers should be checked regularly by authorised personnel. This is
part of the BMP3 contract and is organized by NPS annually in March. Fixings and
easy release mechanisms checked regularly by the Site Manager each half term.
5.
All electrical equipment is regularly checked and tested to conform with the Electricity
at Work Regulations. This is part of the BMP3 contract and is organized by NPS
usually in the Summer holidays. All equipment has notices put on with dates of
inspections.
6.
Complete log book, which is kept on the receptionists desk.
FT/DT and Science - responsibilities
1.
Electrical points and machinery should be regularly checked for faults. Part of BMP3
and organized by NPS annually. Notices are used for faulty equipment

Emergency exits should be kept clear and unlocked. Evacuation procedures should
be practiced and made clear to pupils. Evacuation procedures are completetd termly.
Teaching staff are not normally told when the evacuation will take place.
3.
Any flammable materials should be carefully stored and labeled.
4.
Fire extinguishers are clearly marked and not hidden or obstructed by other
equipment or furniture. The teacher is responsible for keeping extinguishers
unobstructed and fire exits clear within their classroom.
5.
Emergency stop-buttons on machinery should be clearly marked and regularly
checked. Pupils and staff should be instructed in their proper use. Role play is used
annually for new classes to teach the pupils and staff how and why to use emergency
stop buttons.

Health and Safety Team
This team contains the Site Manager, the teacher elected Health and Safety Representative
and a member of the Senior Management Team with responsibilities to health and safety
matters. The Governor designated for Health and Safety is determined at the first meeting of
the full governors in the academic year.
It is the teams responsibility to :Investigate any accident that occurs to a member of staff or a pupil.
Complete regular inspections of the premises and write a risk assessment on their
findings where necessary.
Investigate any Health and Safety risks that have been brought to their attention by
staff or pupils and write a report on them.
The risk assessments and recommendations will be presented to the Governors Health and
Safety committee meeting and the Senior Management member will be on hand to answer
any queries and to give an update on the situation. This sub-committee will meet at least
termly.
General Instructions
The school has a non-smoking policy. Matches, lighters etc. should not be used. Naked
flames are only permitted in controlled areas, e.g. DT, Food Technology and Science rooms.
Naked flames maybe used in classrooms, as long as a proper risk assessment has been
carried out and the necessary fire precautions observed, i.e. a portable fire extinguisher is on
hand - obtainable from the Technician.
New staff and visitors will be given directions on what to do in the case of a fire by the
receptionist before entering the main part of the school.
Evaluation
This policy will be reviewed by the School Support Manager. She will ensure that the policy
is up to date and relevant to current practice. In addition, she will check that it reflects
current legislation. All testing of any fire precaution equipment is logged in the fire log book,
kept in reception.
