Reading/journal writing in intensive reading classes Who is That Mystery Reader? Students will guess which staff member is hiding behind his/her favorite book. Students will visit the photo gallery Monday through Thursday to guess which teacher is which! Students with the most correct guesses will win a prize! Special guest reader to do a read-aloud on school news channel at 2:30 p.m. each day. Million Minute Marathon-above and beyond. If students meet school goal, media specialist will eat mystery foods on the Monday, Jan. 26 Tuesday, Jan. 27 morning news-while blindfolded! Mystery Characters-each class will create a child-sized representation of a character from a book. Clues will be read on the morning news shows, and students will guess the identities of the characters. Prizes will be awarded. The class with the best character will earn 45 minute of Bingo with the principal. Guess Who? Teachers will wear a disguise and have their picture taken with most of their face hidden behind their favorite book. Photos will be hung in hallways; students will guess identities. Student who correctly names the most teachers wins a prize. Guest readers in classrooms Bulletin board will advertise Sunshine State and FRA books Media Specialist will focus on Sunshine State and FRA books during lessons. Camp Read-a-Lot School Ring Race for number of books read Millionaire’s Club-individuals who read one million words AR Challenge-for Brag Tags Reading Lunch Bunch with teachers Shelfies-pictures of students/teachers reading books shared on morning news shows Skype session with Jane Paley, author of Hooper Finds a Family, and her dog Hooper Literacy BINGO Escape from media specialist’s library scavenger hunt Windows decorated to celebrate books Mystery Readers who will also discuss their careers and career goals. School-Wide Read-a-Thon (School Goal 100,000+ pages and 150,000 minutes) If goal is reached, administration will be Silly Stringed Participate in state-wide reading goal of 36 Million Minutes! Special celebrity administrator, guest & parent readers reading in classrooms Cross grade-level Buddy Reads Make posters to advertise favorite books Make Your Mark-students describe favorite book on sticky note, then post in hallways for others to read Mystery Story Tellers-mystery readers will perform a storytelling in each house. “Crazy About Reading”-students wear crazy socks to school. Book Buddies-classes partner up to read with buddies Literacy Night Extravaganza-community and school authors and storytellers share. St. Johns County Library and KidzArt Wednesday, Jan. 28 Thursday, Jan. 29 Friday, Jan. 30 participate as well. Food, beverages, prizes provided. School-wide DEAR time Special guest reader to do a read-aloud on school news channel at 2:30pm! Book Swap-students will bring books to swap. Poetry reading, writing, and sharing “Teddy Bear Tuesday”-students bring a stuffed animal to read to. Million Minute Marathon-DEAR time (some with pajamas!) Teacher Books and Brownies book swap Reading Rocks: Wear Some Funky Socks Recognition of “Leaders of the Pack”; students with highest number of books checked out from media center’ Legos with Literature-literature-based Lego displays created by students at home will be placed on display. Book Swap-students will swap books from Tuesday. Students dress as favorite superhero and explain the hero’s reading power. Sign-ups for read-aloud and Character Counts! Lesson with the book Giraffes Can’t Dance. “Hats Off to Reading”-students can wear a hat to school. Book in Your Pocket Day-students create index trading cards Students walk hallways, writing down information on favorite books to create “someday” lists Book cover doors are judged Score with Book-students wear favorite team jerseys Make Your Mark!-students will decorate bookmarks to be displayed. “Shirts with Words” and “T-shirt Thursday”-students and teachers will wear shirts with words on them, to be read throughout the day. Career Night: authors discussing their jobs, students sharing reports about chosen careers, colleges providing information, chili with toppings served, and PTO providing free books and hosting a board game area. 100th Day Celebrations Cozy Reading Day-kindergarten through fourth-grade students will dress “cozy” and spend extra time reading Hats Off to Books Day-students in grades five through seven will wear favorite hats and spend extra time reading Announcement of awards/recognition of grade level with greatest Edmodo participation during Celebrate Literacy Week Buddy Up and Read!-each intermediate class will partner with a primary class to read some great books together. “Pop Open the Perfect Book”; students will read and enjoy popcorn. Million Minute-flashlight reading Students and teachers will donate one dollar to the Humane Society to be able to wear pajamas to school and bring a stuffed animal. “Team up for Reading”-students can wear favorite team jerseys.
