Clover Kids County Fair Participation Examples
Clover Kids members are eligible to participate in developmentally age-appropriate
opportunities at local county fairs. Examples of age-appropriate Clover Kids
opportunities and guidelines are included in this document. County Extension staff will
need to insert the appropriate information in the areas with green print for inclusion in
County Fair Books. For more assistance with drafting guidelines for Clover Kids Fair

Clover Kids County Fairground Scavenger Hunt
1. Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade may participate in a 4-H sponsored
county fairground scavenger hunt.
2. Scavenger hunt materials are available at the 4-H Fair Office during normal fair
hours.
3. All children completing the scavenger hunt materials will receive a 4-H prize.
4. More information is available at the [insert county name] County Extension Office
before the fair or at the 4-H Fair Office during the fair.
Clover Kids Day at the Fair Camp
[Insert county name] County will be sponsoring a Clover Kids Day at the Fair Camp on
[insert date] for children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Clover Kids Day at the
Fair Camp will take place on the [insert county name] County fairgrounds. More
information, including registration forms and a listing of the day’s events, is available
from the [insert county name] County Extension Office.
Clover Kids Fair Showcase
1. Open to all children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in [insert county name]
County.
2. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to discuss their showcase items with a caring
adult as items are entered.
3. There is no limit to the number of showcase items entered by a Clover Kid;
however, all items must be made by the Clover Kid under adult supervision. Items
may be made at home, in school, at day care, or at camp.
Extension programs are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, or disability.
4. Showcase items may be entered on [insert date] from [enter time] to [enter
time] at [insert location]. Contact [insert county name] County Extension Office
at [insert phone number] or the 4-H Fair Office for directions.
5. All showcase items will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be
given for these items.
6. All showcase items will be on display at the [insert county name] County Fair until
[insert time and date]. Items may be picked up at this time. Items not picked up
at the fairgrounds will be available for pick-up at the [insert county name]
Extension Office during normal office hours.
7. The [insert county name] County Extension Office and the [insert county name]
County Fairboard will use diligence to ensure the safety of all items entered at
the [insert county name] County Fair; however, we are not responsible for damage
or loss by fire, theft, etc.
8. Showcase items may be in any of the following categories:
Class A: Animals – Showcase items related to all species and types of animals.
The actual animal may not be brought to the fair.
Class B: Creative Arts – Showcase items related to art, photography, and music.
Class C: Agriculture and Natural Resources – Showcase items related to plants,
agriculture, and the environment. Notice: Due to the risk of bringing
live plants to the county fair, you will be totally responsible for the care
of your plant(s) while they are at the fair.
Class D: Family and Consumer Science – Showcase items related to food,
clothing, or home decorating. Sewn or home-crafted items can be
included in this class.
Class E: Personal Development – Showcase items related to, or created by the
child, such as stories, poems, etc.
Class F: Science, Engineering, and Technology – Showcase items related to
science, engineering, technology, or items designed and built by the
child, such as wood items.
Class G: Other – Showcase items not included under any of the above classes.
Clover Kids Pet Show
1. Open to all children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in [insert county name]
County. No pre-fair entry is required.
2. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to show the audience their pet and tell a
caring adult about their pet.
3. Clover Kids Pet Show animals are only allowed on the fairground during the entry
and show time. Entry of pets will take place at [insert time and date] at
30 minutes before the start of the show in the [insert location].
4. All pets must come properly restrained or contained. Appropriate examples
include on a leash or in a box, cage, or bowl.

5. Livestock animals such as swine, horses, cattle (beef and dairy) are not to be
shown in the Clover Kids Pet Show. All other animals must be less than 200
pounds in order to be shown.
6. Clover Kids and pets must be supervised by an adult at all times. The adult is
responsible for both the Clover Kid and pet. Only one Clover Kid and pet will be
allowed in the showcase area at a time, along with a responsible adult, to ensure
the safety of the pet, the Clover Kid, and the audience.
7. Cats and dogs must have a current rabies certificate. (Use the same health
requirements as for the 4-H Dog, Cat, and Pet Shows.)
8. Any female animal in season cannot be shown.
9. Participants will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be given.
10. Clover Kids may show animals in the following classes.
Class A. Cats
Class B. Dogs
Class C: Gerbils
Class D: Guinea Pigs
Class E: Hamsters
Class F: Mice
Class G: Turtles
Class H: Fish
Class I: Birds
Class J: Other
Clover Kids Stuffed Animal Pet Show
1. Open to all children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in [insert county name]
County. No pre-fair entry is required.
2. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to show the audience their stuffed animal
and discuss the animal with a caring adult.
3. Clover Kids may enter the Stuffed Animal Pet Show at [insert time and date]
at 30 minutes before the start of the show in the [insert location].
4. Participants will receive a participation ribbon; no premium money will be given.
Clover Kids Bucket Bottle Calf Show
Purposes:
A. To design a developmentally appropriate beef/dairy project to fit the physical
and maturity level of young children in Kindergarten – 3rd grade.
B. To introduce children to health, nutrition, and environmental needs of bucket
bottle calves.
C. To provide children opportunities to learn basic record keeping and communication
skills.
D. To nurture children’s understanding of the beef/dairy industry.

Rules:
1. All Kindergarten – 3rd grade animal exhibit opportunities will be cooperative and
not competitive.
2. Project is open to all [insert county name] County children in Kindergarten – 3rd
grade.
3. Children in Kindergarten – 3rd grade must be accompanied by an adult in the show
ring at all times.
4. Calves must be purchased and in possession of the child within two weeks of
birth. Any newborn or orphaned calf - steer or heifer - dairy or beef - purebred
or crossbred - calved between March 1 and July 1 of the current year can be a
part of this project. Bull calves will be allowed at the fair.
5. Calf must be bucket or bottle fed; no nursing permitted.
6. An exhibitor is limited to a maximum of one calf exhibited at the fair.
7. Calves do not need to be ear tagged or entered before the fair. Record keeping
forms will need to be filled out prior to the show day and are available at the
[insert county name] County Extension Office. The record keeping forms must be
turned in at the time of entry on the day of the show between [insert time and
date] at the [insert location].
8. All calves will be shown on halter and should be clean and groomed.
9. Children will be asked questions regarding:
a. Care and management of raising the calf.
b. Showing/handling of the calf.
c. Fitting, general health, and condition of the calf and child’s knowledge of the
project.
d. Appropriate record keeping.
NOTE: Quality and conformation of the calf will NOT be considered in the bucket
bottle program.
10. Bucket bottle calf exhibitors must follow the fair’s rules and health requirements
as stated in the fair book. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. No evidence of warts, ringworm, pinkeye, or other infectious conditions will be
allowed.
b. All exhibitors must show his/her own animal in partnership with a caring adult.
c. Each exhibitor is responsible for the care of his or her animal in partnership
with a caring adult.
11. Calves will be brought to the fair on the day of the show and return home the
same day.
12. A participation ribbon will be awarded to all K – 3 exhibitors.

Class 2 – Exhibitors in grades 2 – 3
