WHO WAS CORNELIUS PAYTON - Ancestry.com

WHO WAS CORNELIUS PAYTON?
When I was a young woman with my first child on the way, I did an oral history for my
grandmother, Ella Frances Payton Oliver. She gave me the names of her grandparents,
her parents, her siblings, her aunts and uncles and her cousins. Her grandfather was
Randolph Payton who married Sarah Ann Mahaley Talton. He was born in 1822 in
Madison County, Georgia. For years, this was all I had until a fellow researcher told me
about The Peytons of Virginia, Vol II by the Peyton Society of Virginia. They had a
whole pedigree for Randolph’s ancestors as follows:
Thomas Peyton (1580) of Horsley Parish England
Philip Peyton (1612) of Gloucester County, England
Philip Peyton (1644 England) - Westmoreland County, Virginia
Valentine Peyton (1680) of Westmoreland County, Virginia
William Peyton I (1718) of Stafford County, Virginia
William Payton II (1742) of Stafford County, Virginia
Cornelius Payton b. 1777 Va migrated to Madison County, Georgia
Randolph Payton b. 1822 Madison County, Georgia
Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton b. 1850 DeKalb County, Georgia
Ella Frances Payton b. DeKalb County, Georgia (my grandmother)
I eagerly added this information to my genealogy database and was satisfied with it until
several male descendants of this line decided to do a YDNA test. As the Payton/Peyton
YDNA project grew in numbers over the years, something strange began to happen. The
participants from the line of my Payton family did not match any other Peyton/Payton
family, even the ones we were supposed to match according to The Peyton of Virginia
Vol. II. We did not even share the same haplotype. Now, Cornelius Payton and his
siblings were orphans from an unknown ancestry.
The father of siblings1 William C, Margaret, George, Leroy, Gabriel, Elizabeth, Moses,
Cornelius, and Randolph Payton has been speculated by the Peyton/Payton YDNA
project coordinator as William Payton who died c. 1800 in Georgia. The birthplace of
this William has been speculated as Stafford County, Virginia. Descendants of William
C, Leroy, Moses and Cornelius have matching YDNA. Their YDNA does not match any
of the other Peyton families in the project but they do have two Humphrey matches and
two Prichard matches that are close enough in genetic distance to indicate a common
ancestor. Since Humphrey and Prichard (“ap Richard”) are both Welsh names, they
could be related to each other through a common Welsh ancestor who may not have been
named Humphrey or Prichard. The Welsh naming system used the first name of the child
and the first name of the father with “ap” between the two. Humphrey ap Hugh was the
ancestor of the Humphrey family of our YDNA match. The children of his son Owen ap
Hugh took the name Owens or Owings in America. Humphrey and Prichard families

migrated from Wales to Chester Co, PA. See Humphrey and Prichard pedigrees for
families they have in common. I had to approach this problem through the pedigrees of
our YDNA matches and hope that something stuck out that would signal that I was on the
right course.
I learned a lot while researching my family history. I studied books written about my
ancestral families, I took genealogy seminars, I studied for the genealogy certification, I
took courses on DNA and I studied the morals, customs and social lives of the colonists
in early America, I went to family message boards. I learned that when the genealogy of
a family like my Payton family hits a brick wall, the rules have to be bent. Sure,
documentation proof is most desirable, but when it is missing due to fires, floods, wars,
rodents and insects over three or four centuries, other resources must be pursued,
sometimes using unorthodox methods. Hey, if it works who is to say it is unorthodox.
And, during the many years of my research, I learned a few things about researching
Southern families.
1. Marriages before the Civil War were really contracts between two families. The
bride and groom had little say in the process. A lot was riding on finding the
“suitable” spouse2 for a son or daughter: Land, slaves and other goods of value were
at stake. Family reputation was important. Marry someone your family did not
approve of and you got disinherited. I have read many wills that spell this out.
Mostly Southerners married into families they were already related to. They already
knew the family reputations and they would insure that the family fortune stayed in
the family. First cousin marriages were common.
2. Once someone married into a family they brought all their other relations into the
family as well. The children of all the bride’s siblings and cousins would now be
considered as “suitable” marriage partners for the children of all the siblings and
cousins of the groom. They were not marrying a spouse, they were marrying a family.
Family relationships were complicated. Sometimes they knew who they were related
to but not how they were related. The term “cousin” was used very loosely. And, to
make sure family relationships were honored, they named children with names of
prominent families they were related to. Many families gave their children given
names that were the last names of their family connections.
3. Related families moved in herds like buffalo. Siblings, cousins, in-laws, cousins of
in-laws all moved together or one family moved first and others soon followed. If
you find one family in any given area you will find members of families they were
related to in the previous location as well. Moving in groups of related families
insured that you brought your social, financial and spiritual network with you as well.
You were never alone in a strange place.
4. Both men and women, even in the upper classes, had affairs that resulted in out of
2
Sex, Courtship and the Single Colonist , Colonial Williamsburg website
wedlock children, even in the upper classes. The Bastardy Bonds of North Carolina3
are an eye opening volume to read. Women had to reveal the father of the child to the
courts and he then had to post a bond to insure the support of the child until the age of
majority. If she refused to name him, her father or brother or Uncle or another relative
posted the bond for her. Bastard children (that was the term the courts used) were
often bound out to other families to train for a career. Children as young as 4 and 5
were bound out.
5. Once a branch of a family wandered off to another location, all communication was
not cut off with that branch by other branches who stayed put or by other branches
who went the other way. They wrote to each other. I enjoy reading letters from
family members who were separated by distance. They did not write a lot of letters,
but they did write long chatty letters that included births, deaths, illness, financial
problems, weather, crops, friends, etc. They also visited each other, especially if they
were hunting for a suitable spouse for their son or daughter. Families in different
locations knew a lot about each other because family is an important
social/financial/spiritual institution. One member of these two families in locations
separated by long distances might even name a son or daughter after the son or
daughter of the other family to keep the family relationship close despite the miles
between them. This proved to be a big help when trying to connect two families with
the same unusual given names but living in separate states.
6. When a family name is used as a given name, there is usually some connection to that
family. Our Payton family has given names of Randolph, Shelton, Jarrett, Mayfield,
Chesley and Houston. How were we connected to families by those names? I
checked the pedigrees of families by those names to find any connections. And, given
names are carried down the centuries in the same families. When I found the same
given name in two seemingly unrelated families, like Matthew Houston Patton named
after his Houston grandmother and Matthew Houston Payton, a descendant of my
ancestor Cornelius Payton, I want to know how the name got passed down between
the two families. And, how did my great-grandfather get the name Thomas Asbury
Cleveland Payton?

1805 Georgia land lottery. Census 1810 and 1820 Hardin Co, KY along with Charles
Payton, Peggy Payton and William Humphrey who was probably the son of William
Humphrey (YDNA MATCH FAMILY) who married Elizabeth Threlkeld from the B line
below. Gabriel’s brother Moses had Archibald Payton who married Jemimah Humphrey
from the same line. Gabriel’s son Reuben married Jemimah Humphrey Also from the B
line in Hardin Co, KY is Alexander Bryant who married Anne Peyton, daughter of James
Peyton and Susannah Threlkeld. I find it interesting that members of two separate
Payton/Peyton lines would be in the same place at the same time without being related. I
do not believe that they are unrelated. I believe that they are from the same line.
However, there were Patton families in Hardin County, KY which gives some strength to
my theory that Payton could have been Patton and changed their name because they
identified with their Peyton cousins.
Southern families were close knit and tended to intermarry with each other over and over
and tended to migrate to the same places together. Family was the main social, spiritual,
and financial support for individuals. If more than one related family moved to another
location, other related families moved with them or soon thereafter. It is known that
Humphrey, Peyton, Threlkeld and Patton were related to each other and therefore it is no
surprise that they, or families related to them, are found together in Hardin Co, KY as
they were found together in Stafford County, Virginia prior to being in Georgia at the
same time.
Gabriel Payton was in Georgia first before moving to Hardin Co, KY. Leroy Payton was
in Georgia before he moved to TN. Families related to the Humphrey and Threlkeld
families from Stafford Co, Va migrated to the same area of Georgia. There are Pattons
from the Burke Co, NC Pattons in that area of Georgia as well. These families were also
found in TN at the same time as a descendant of Leroy Payton. My view of this is that
several members of the same Peyton/Payton/Patton family split up and migrated to other
areas. Some moved to Georgia and then split up and one went on to TN and then Indiana.
5
Both Price (ap Rice) and Ellis are Welsh names and could be connected to the Humphrey families of PA.
See Humphrey pedigree. Gabriel’s son Reuben did marry Jemima Humphrey from the line of our
Humphey YDNA match who migrated to PA from Wales.
Others stayed in Georgia (Moses, Cornelius, William C) and intermarried with Threlkeld
and Threlkeld related families several times. The family of Gabriel and his Threlkeld,
Humphrey, Patton and Thompson relations migrated to Hardin Co, KY. Check out the
State/County records to see how many of these families were in the same places at the
same times. THIS IS NO COINCIDENCE
See Moses Payton A7 for more connections.
A6. Elizabeth Payton born between 1774 and 1784 in Virginia married John Bell. No
further information.
A7. Moses Payton born 1775 Virginia married Nancy Bryant. 1820 Madison County,
Georgia census, 1830, 1840 Elbert County, Georgia. Died 1850 Elbert County
Georgia. Children: (A25) George Payton, (A26) William Payton (A27) John A
Payton (A28) Nancy Payton (A29) Moses Payton (A30) Archibald Payton (A31)
Elizabeth Payton (A32) Henry D Payton (A33) Ann Payton.
Who was the Moses Peyton in Maurey County, TN in 1811 with Robert Patton and
Henry Payton?
I believe that Moses Payton was named after Moses Threlkeld who married his
cousin Anne Peyton the daughter of James Peyton and Susannah Threlkeld. Anne
Peyton also married Alexander Bryant who in 1780 was on the Hardin Co, KY
military records in Squire Boone’s company. Moses Payton (b. 1777) married a
Nancy Bryant who could have been a cousin. Anne Peyton and Alexander Bryant.
had a Ruth Bryant and Jane Bryant in KY. Did they also have a Nancy or was Nancy
a cousin of Alexander from the same Bryant line?
Squire Boone was the father of the famous Daniel Boone who married Rebecca
Bryan from the same Bryan family as the Bryan ancestors of Milda Catherine Kelley
who married Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton, son of Randolph Payton, son of
Cornelius Payton, brother of Moses.
Moses Payton’s son Archibald married Malinda Threlkeld. Cornelius’ grandson
Matthew Houston Payton married Myrtie Boone (pedigree unclear). Coincidence?
See section B following and see Hardin Co, KY records.
If Moses, Cornelius, Leroy, William C and Gabriel Payton are from the Peyton line
of James Peyton and Susannah Threlkeld, why does the YDNA of other descendants
of this line not match with the descendants of Moses, Cornelius, Leroy and William
C. There could have been an incident such as an out of wedlock birth that left us
with a Payton name but the YDNA of another family. Or, there could have been an
adoption where a Payton family adopted a child from another family with different
YDNA.
It is interesting that William Humphrey (from the line of the Humphrey family with a
descendant who matches the YDNA of descendants of Moses, Cornelius, Leroy and
William C. Payton) married Elizabeth Threlkeld in 1764. Elizabeth was the niece of
Susannah Threlkeld who married James Peyton. AH, that would give an
opportunity for William Humphrey to have an out of wedlock child by a Peyton
woman, either an unmarried woman and the child kept the Peyton name, or a Peyton
wife and the Peyton husband never knew. However, William C. Payton, the oldest
of the brothers was born in 1762 and I do not think that William Humphrey could
have been the father of William C, Moses, Leroy and Cornelius as well as all the
other Payton siblings. It would have to have happened earlier.
William Humphrey was born in 1720 and was married to Sarah Wood first. Could
he have fathered the father of all the Payton brothers. Their father would have to
have been born around 1742 or earlier? It is possible. The Humphrey and the Peyton
families were in Stafford County, Virginia at the same time. And, then the name was
changed from Peyton to Payton? Why? Because the father of the Payton brothers
was illegitimate and the name change was to differentiate them from legitimate
Peyton descendants?
But, there could be another YDNA match that is closer to Payton then Humphrey
that has not been tested yet. We will have to wait to find out if there is.
Then, there is also the close connection of the Patton family to the Peyton family.
Ruth Peyton, daughter of James and Susannah Threlkeld, married James Thompson,
the son of William Thompson and Mary Patton, a descendant of Henry Patton and
Sarah Lynn whose descendants migratged from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA which is
adjacent to Chester Co, PA where the Humphrey ancestors of William migrated from
Wales in the late seventeenth century. There are Pattons in Stafford County Va at the
same time as the Peyton and Humphrey families. These families could have known
each other for many generations before the marriage of Ruth Payton to a Patton
descendant. Descendants of the Peyton line intermarried with the same McInteer
family that intermarried with the Patton family.
This Patton family is indirectly related to many of the same families that are related
to Payton through marriage over the centuries, including the Mayfield family. The
Mayfield family shares many names in common with the Payton family. Mayfield
married into the Buchanan, Coffey and Boone families and these families are found
in several areas where Payton migrated (see State/County records). Cornelius Payton
had Randolph Payton who had Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton. Asbury Coffey
and Cleveland Coffey are both on the Mayfield pedigree, along with 8 other given
names in common with Payton. This Coffey family has members who migrated to
Burke Co, NC and then to Indiana where there is a descendant of Leroy Payton.
Leroy Payton, Jr. married Nancy Smith who had a Buchanan mother. Buchanan also
has Patton and Neely on the pedigree. Neely is on both the Patton and Humphrey
pedigrees. Leroy Payton, Jr and Nancy Smith had Isaac Mayfield Payton, a
descendant of the same Mayfield line. Isaac Newton Payton, son of Cornelius, had
Matthew Houston Payton. See Matthew Houston Patton in Burke County, NC.
Could the father of Moses, Cornelius, Leroy and William C. Payton, who have
matching YDNA be the result of a Humphrey/Patton illicit liason due to the Patton
connetion to the Peyton family of James Peyton and Susannah Thelkeld? Could this
out of wedlock Patton have changed the name to Payton in an effort to show their
relationship with the Peyton family? Since Patton and Peyton were connected
through Thompson it is possible that these families knew each other earlier. And,
since Patton and Humphrey are connected to each other through both of them being
in the same area of PA at the same time, all three families probably knew each other
for some time before the Payton brothers were born.
As you go through the rest of my research, keep these questions in mind.
A8. Cornelius Payton born 1777 Virginia married Susan Unknown. 1805 Georgia land
lottery, 1820, 1830 and 1840 census of Madison County, Georgia, Georgia land

A9. Randolph Payton born between 1786 and 1795 married Elizabeth David. No further
information. Since the date he was born is after the Revolutionary War, perhaps
Randolph Payton was named after Peyton Randolph, with a play on names. Many
children born after the Revolution were named after heroes of the Revolution. There
are many children named after George Washington and Marquis de LaFayette and
Peyton Randolph, having these first names attached to their last name. But, here we
have a name tailor made to honor Peyton Randolph. This is just speculation, but it
would be a fit.

The Elbert County, Georgia census of 1820 has John Threlkeld. If he were of age
in 1820 to be listed as HOH in the census, he would have been old enough to be the
father of Malinda. In 1830 there were other Threlkelds in the census, but none of
them could be the father of Malinda. In 1830 there were Delilah Threlkeld, the
widow of Thomas, and there were Nancy, John and Willis.

I believe that the names Asbury and Cleveland came from the Mayfield pedigree.
Both Cleveland Coffey and Asbury Coffey are descendants of the Mayfield
pedigree. The Threlkeld family married intot he Asbury family and if Payton
descended from Peyton with a Humphrey YDNA donor, then it makes sense
because Threlkeld married Humphrey. Threlkeld also married Peyton.

??? Matilda Threlkeld (1822 Elbert Co, Ga) married Archibald
Payton (son of Moses Payton) and is probably from the same
family. Since there was a John Threlkeld in Elbert in 1820, he
could be her father.
Is our PAyton family descended from the related PEyton family of James and Susannah
Threlkeld (see pedigree B below)? Is our PAyton family descended from a Patton family
who changed their name to PAyton? Either way, it can not be proven as there was an
incident that left us with the Payton name but YDNA from another family, probably
Humphrey. Are Mayfield and/or Coffey names of the unknown maternal ancestors of our
Payton family?
B. FAMILY OF JAMES PEYTON AND SUSANNAH THRELKELD
James Peyton39 was, per POVII, the son of Charles Peyton and Diana Evans (later
married William Simpson). Susannah Threlkeld’s family may be from the Threlkeld line
that had Simpson marriages. Susannah Threlkeld was the daughter of Christopher
Threlkeld who may have been a descendant of the Threlkeld family of Melmerby,
Cumbria, England40. Humphrey Threlkeld who died in 1526 had brothers Rowland,
Richard and sister Margaret who married Robert Simpson after her first husband Thomas
Ballais died in 1499. Sister Elizabeth married an unknown Simpson. Humphrey
Threlkeld had Christopher who had Lancelot who had Christopher. Thus, it is
established that Christopher is a frequent name in that family. Could the
Simpson/Threlkeld connection have been carried on into America41? If so, we would
have the Threlkeld/Simpson/Peyton relationship and it would be Threlkeld who would

Remember that related Southern families stuck like glue to each other and even intermarried with each
other.

have been first connected to Peyton through Simpson even before William Humphrey
came into the picture.
HOWEVER, if William Humphrey and Diana Evans (Welsh name “verch42” Evan) were
related to each other through their Welsh ancestry, then William Humphrey could have
been related to Diana Evans before she married William Simpson. Thus, Humphey would
have an earlier connection to Peyton through Diana Evans, and thus would have known
Elizabeth Threlkeld through Diana’s son, James Peyton who married Susannah Threlkeld
who MAY be related to William Simpson who was the second husband of Diana Evans
Peyton. Sounds like a typical severely entangled Southern family relationship to me.
Could a possible relationship between Diana Evans and William Humphrey have been
the reason William Humphrey married into the Threlkeld family? He could have been
introduced to the Threlkeld family through Diana Evans who had son James Peyton who
married Susanna Threlkeld. James Peyton married Susanna Threlkeld in 1758 and
William Humphrey married Elizabeth Threlkeld in 1762.
If Diana Evans married Charles Peyton in Stafford County, before 1726, it should be
noted in the Overwharton Parish register but it is not. Neither are the births of James and
Evan Peyton. After the death of Charles Peyton, Diana married William Simpson in
whose will of 1749 in King George, Va are named his “Sons in Law”43 James Peyton
and Evan Peyton. King George is supposedly the birthplace of William Humphrey in
1721. William Humphey’s father Joseph was supposedly born in 1700 in Stafford
County, Va.
I can not find any descendants of Million Simpson, daughter of William and Diana
(Evans) Peyton born in 1740 but there is a later Million Simpson with the following
pedigree:
John Simpson 1620 Scotland
John Simpson 1645 Scotland married Mary Thompson44
Richard Simpson 1692 married Sarah Barker
George Simpson 1724 married Susannah Wheeler
Richard Simpson 1745 married Ann Lucas
Million Simpson 1773
Could Mary Thompson be related to William Thompson who married Mary Patton?
Their son, James Thompson married Ruth Peyton, daughter of James Peyton and
Susannah Threlkeld. How much more tangled can these pedigrees get?
“The age of John is derived from various court records regarding depositions taken and
his birth year is determined to have been about 1645. There is apparently no records to

definitively support this date. It is believed that the instant John may have arrived in the
colonies about 1678. One source suggests that his wife Mary arrived with him. There is
some suggestion that he may have been born in VA., or he may have arrived in the
colonies as an indentured servant. It is also suggested that he may have had some
relations in Maryland. There is a deposition given by a John Simpson on 8 February
1687/8 wherein he stated that he was 40, but there is no evidence that this was John 'the
Scotchman' Simpson. Via his marriage to Mary Thompson and her family, John's sons
are believed to have inherited a great deal of land in the area of Aquia Creek in Stafford
County, Virginia.”45
Could this John Simpson be an ancestor of William Simpson who married Diana Evans
Peyton?
John Simpson (1645) also had:
Richard Simpson (1692) married Sarah Barker
Elizabeth Simpson married John Hally (1707)
Sarah Hally (1739) married William Hanie
Sybil Haynie (1783) married Matthew Patton Thomson b. 1773 Augusta Co, Va (Moses
Thomson and Jane Patton, b. 1743 in Ireland?)- There were descendants of Henry Patton
and Sarah Lynn, including several named Matthew living in Augusta Co, Va at this time.
Perhaps Jane was a relative who had recently emigrated ?
So, here we have Simpson married Threlkeld, Simpson married Evans/Peyton, Simpson
married Thompson, Simpson married Thomson/Patton and Peyton married
Thompson/Patton. But, I can not prove that all are connected to each other due to
incomplete pedigree information. Is it all just coincidence?

In checking this above pedigree and later descendants of this Peyton family, I have the
following names repeated from generation to generation: Evan (2), James (6), Anne (4),
Daniel (2) Fanny (2) Jemimah (3), Jane (2), Elizabeth (3) Margaret (2), Sussanna (4)
Mary (5), George (2), Thomas (2) John (3)
This seems to indicate that certain names are passed down within the family . There are
no Cornelius, Leroy or Moses repeats in the names in this Peyton family. In fact, these
names do not even appear in this Peyton pedigree. How did these names get into our
Payton family? One way would be through the female side of the family. One Patton
family48 that is not related to Henry and Sarah Lynn had Cornelius as a given name.
They migrated from Ireland as well.
Once the Patton descendants of Henry and Sarah Lynn migrated to America and settled in
PA and Augusta Co, Va, they must have had relatives in Ireland who migrated later and
settled in other areas of Virginia, such as Stafford. That the Patton family of Stafford
County, Virginia is related to the Patton family of Augusta County, Virginia is evident in
the marriages of these families. Patton/Thompson/Peyton and Patton/McInteer/Peyton.
If the two Patton families were not related to each other in Ireland they became related to
each other in America through their marriage relationships to the same Petyon family and
families related to Peyton. Once a Patton/Thompson descendant was married into the
Peyton family, the Peyton descendants had later marriages to families related to Patton,
like McInteer.
1. Alexander McInteer (1790 Stafford Co, Va) married Sarah Sinclair
2a. Agatha McInteer married James Patton (George Gordon Patton b. 1757
Scotland/Sarah Stringfellow, James Patton 1722 Scotland/Eleanor Gordon)49
48
See Patton pedigree
The line of Henry Patton and Sarah Lynn were living in Scotland before they migrated to Ireland on the
request of the church to “Anglicize” the resistant Irish. Perhaps this Patton family were related and
migrated later. Or, the Peytons identified with this Patton family as they already had a Patton connection
49
2b. Sarah McInteer married Thornton Patton
2. Horatio A. McInteer 1834 Kentucky (William Henry McInteer b. 1811 Va/Margaret
Jennings50 Thompson, William Henry McInteer/Adah Harding b. 1790 Stafford Co,
Va) married Sarah Peyton (Silas, Daniel/Elizabeth Burks, James/Elizabeth Thelkeld)
3. Joyie/Joyce McInteer married William Patton51 (George Gordon Patton/Sarah
Stringfellow)
Could my Payton ancestor and his siblings be descended from a Peyton from this line?
There are several blanks in the Peyton pedigree at the supposed time that the father of
Payton siblings would have been born.52 If Charles Peyton and Diana Evans had another
child he would have been mentioned in the will of William Simpson as Evan and James
were. The children of Evan and James were born around the same time as the Payton
siblings so none of their children could have been the father of the Payton siblings. Could
the Payton siblings be the children of Evan Payton? Children that were not mentioned
anywhere? But, the Payton siblings do not have any descendants named Evan. However
there are given names that do crossover. Christopher Columbus and Isaac Newton are
both given names in the Peyton and Payton descendants. This would be no coincidence if
the two families were related to each other.
Isaac Newton Payton (son of Cornelius) born 1835 in VA
Isaac Newton Peyton (Alexander Peyton, Daniel Peyton, James Peyton, Charles Peyton
and Diana Evans) born 1852 in Hart County, KY
Christopher Columbus Payton (son of John, son of Cornelius) born 1855 in Georgia
Christopher Columbus Edwards (son of Cader Edwards and Anne Peyton, daughter of
Daniel Peyton, son of James Peyton, son of Charles Peyton and Diana Evans) b. 1842 in
KY
Yes, these are fairly common names, but with the other connections, I believe that this is
just another piece of evidence that they are related. These names were passed down in the
family with a later person being named after the earlier who was obviously named after
the famous person by that name.
This PEyton family is the only one in POVII with a connection to a Humphrey from the
line of our Humphrey YDNA match. This is a good indication that this could be the line
of our Payton family. BUT, descendants of this line of Peyton do not match the YDNA
of descendants of my ancestor Cornelius Payton and his brothers. How could my Payton
ancestor come from this line? Sometime around 1700 (give or take 50 years) there could
have been an incident that resulted in a line of Peyton/Payton with Humphrey YDNA.
with a descendant of Henry Patton and Sarah Lynn through James Thompson (Patton mother) who married
Ruth Peyton (daughter of James Peyton/Susannah Threlkeld).

Naturally, after this incident the descendants of the individual(s) involved in the incident
would not match the YDNA of descendants of those not involved in the incident.

I can not connect James Serrill with the TN Sherrill families conclusively. See Chester
County, PA records.
As Prichard is a Welsh name from “ap Richard” there are probably many unrelated
Prichard families who came from unrelated Welsh men named after a father named
Richard. However, it is possible that this Prichard family is connected to the NC
Prichard family with Quaker connections. Humphrey was a Quaker family in PA and
since Humphrey and Prichard have matching YDNA, it could be that Prichard was also a
Quaker family. There is a Prichard marriage in NC to a Quaker Arnold.

With a James Brantley in Isle of Wight in 1790 and the Prichards in Isle of Wight in the
1600’s and in Surry County in the 1700’s could Henry Prichard be the father (or
grandfather) of Benjamin Prichard born in Va in 1792.
Isle of Wight in Virginia is on the eastern coast. Most of Virginia borders with NC with
a tiny part of Virginia to the west bordering with a tiny part of eastern Tennessee. The
most logical migration route to Tennessee from Virginia would be through North
Carolina. This is shown in the Brantley pedigree above.

In trying to determine HOW Humphrey first became a part of our Payton YDNA, I have
looked at many pedigrees and files from which I have created a time line:
Before 1692: John Simpson married Mary Thompson
1704 Diana Evans born62 married Charles Payton before 1726.
1721 William Humphrey born (d. 1800)
1722 Mary Patton born (James/Mary Borden, Henry/Sarah Lynn)
1725 James Peyton (Charles/Diana Evans) born
1740 Million Simpson (William/Diana widow Peyton) born
1746 Elizabeth Threlkeld born
1758 James Peyton married Susannah Threlkeld
1762 William Humphrey married Elizabeth Threlkeld
1767 Ruth Peyton born (James/Susannah Threlkeld)
1784 Ruth Peyton married James Thompson (William Thompson/Mary Patton)

62
William married first Sarah Wood and second Elizabeth Threlkeld
Worldconnect file of Bonnie= wbkearns@yahoo.com indicates that her father was Evan Williams. .

There are two Richard Prichard’s born in this time frame. One born 1739 in an unknown place, the son
of Andrew Prichard and Frances Jenkins, born unknown. The other was born in 1756 in Cohassett, MA the
son of Oliver Prichard and Abigail Tower.
67
There is a William Alexander Patton born in 1730 in Cumberland Co, PA who died in Bourbon Co, KY.
His father was Matthew Leander Patton, the supposed patriarch of the Burke Co, NC Patton line.
68
I find no record, but there is an Osburn Coffey born in 1858 in TN.
69
This is either Edmund Coffey born in 1733 in Nelson Co, Va or the one born in 1735 in Essex Co, Va
who is on the Mayfield pedigree as the son of John Coffey and Jane Graves. Since the one born in Essex
died in Nelson Co, Va, I think they both are from the same family.
70
Could be another brother of Edmund, as per the descendnts of John Coffey and Jane Graves
71
There is a Col. John Thompson born 1764 in Augusta Co, Va, the son of William Thomson. A William
Thompson married Mary Patton of Augusta Co, Va and had James Thompson who married Ruth Peyton,

Burke Co
Burke Co, NC is a pivotal location for families connected to our Payton family
1. PATTON
Descendants of Henry Patton and Sarah Lynn. Other descendants include James
Thompson who married Ruth Peyton, daughter of James Peyton and Susannah
Threlkeld, the aunt of Elizabeth Threlkeld who married William Humphrey who is
from the line of our Humphrey YDNA match, which includes Jemima Humphrey
who married Reuben Payton, son of Gabriel who is the brother of Cornelius, Leroy,
Moses and William C, who share YDNA. A descendant of Moses Payton married a
Threlkeld in Georgia.
2. Sherrill
Descendants of Adam Sherrill and Elizabeth Corzine. Other descendants married into
the line of our Prichard YDNA match in Wilson County, TN. This Sherrill migrated
to Schulyer Co, Ill as did descendants of William Humphrey who married (1) Sarah
Wood (2) Elizabeth Threlkeld
3. Coffey, Boone and Buchanan families with members who are on the Mayfield
pedigree of the ancestors of Milda Catherine Kelley who married Thomas Asbury
Cleveland Payton, the son of Randolph Payton who was the son of Cornelius Payton.
4. Abraham Mayfield (possibly from same Mayfield line)
5. Cleveland Coffey (See Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton). Could Susan, the wife of
Cornelius Payton be a Coffey, or perhaps a Mayfield which has this family Coffey on
it’s pedigree. (see similarities of names on the Mayfield and Payton pedigrees)

Marvel Coffey b. 1775 a descendant of John Coffey and Jane Graves who are on the Mayfield pedigree.
See the Mayfield marriage below. Rachel Boone b. 1777 or 1790 was the daughter of either Jesse or
Jonathan Boone. See 1790 census above for both. They are descended from Squire Boone and Sarah
Morgan who are the parents of the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone who married Rebecca Bryan who is
from the same Bryan pedidgree as Morgave (Mgt) Bryan who is the ancestor of Milda Catherine Kelley
who married Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton the son of Randolph Payton who was the son of Cornelius
Payton. Milda Catherine Kelley was also a Mayfield descendant. This Boone is on the same Mayfield
pedigree as well. Buchanan (with Patton connections) is also on the Mayfield pedigree. This makes
Mayfield a pivotal family for our Payton connection to Patton.

It seems that our Payton family has connections in Burke County, NC92 at some time
between Va (Cornelius born 1777) and Ga (Cornelius on 1805 land lottery). I base this on
the facts:
Matthew Houston Patton was born in Burke. Co NC. Isaac Newton Payton (son of
Cornelius) named a son Matthew Houston Payton. Georgia Storey (father born SC) who
married Isaac Newton Payton had distant Patton relatives in Burke Co, NC. If the Patton
and Payton families had connections in Burke NC then Isaac Newton Payton may have
known or known of the Patton connection to Storey when both families migrated from SC (Storey) and NC (Payton) to Ga.
Asbury Coffey and Cleveland Coffey have Burke Co, NC connections and Randolph
Payton (son of Cornelius) named a son Thomas Asbury Cleveland Payton. Susan
Unknown (wife of Cornelius) could have been a Coffey descendant of the same Mayfield
line as Milda Catherine Kelley (father born SC) who married Thomas Asbury Cleveland
Payton. Southern families were famous for marrying cousins and Thomas A. C. Payton
and Milda Kelley may have been cousins through the Coffey/Mayfield connection.

Jarrett Pedigree
Although I can not connect them to each other, Jarrett is a given name on the Payton
pedigree. See Jonathan Jattett Payton grandson of William C. Payton, brother of
Cornelius, Moses and Leroy Payton. Jarrett is also on the Patton pedigree.

Thomas Jarrett 1735 Isle of Wight Va/Susannah Buckner
William Kinchin 1681 Isle of Wight Va married Elizabeth Ruffin 1685 Surry Co Va
Martha Kinchin 1704 married Thomas Jarrett
There is a line of Boone with the given name Kinchin in NC and Georgia but they are
supposedly from another YDNA branch and do not match the line of Squire Boone.
Kinchen Augustus Boone was born in 1790 in NC and his father William was born in Isle
of Wight, Va. His mother, Rebecca English was the daughter of Nathan English and
Sarah Kinchin who was also the daughter of William Kinchen and Elizabeth Ruffin.
Thus: Jarrett and Boone are connected to each other through Kinchen and Boone and
Bryant are connected by Military and Pryton and Bryant and connected to each other by
marriage.

Devereaux Wynne was the son of John Wynne (1745 Va) and Polly Lewis.
“The following is quoted from an email received from Billie
Gilmore(BGilm59432@aol.com) on 3-13-2004.
John and Mary Lewis Wynne moved to Franklin Co., NC and later to Lebanon, Wilson
Co., TN. John's father Thomas was either a Tory or afraid of them. He was prob. a
Quaker and the Tories gave them a lot of grief for not fighting and remaining loyal to the
Crown. John Wynne's father could be one of several Thomas Wynnes that I have but (I
think) he descends from Maj. Joshua Wynne and Mary Jones. At this time I don't know
how he fits in. It is prob. thru Joshua's son Robert who md Sarah Knibb but I have two
more wives for Thomas and the dates don't mesh. The wives are Mary "Polly" Edwards
(parentage unk) and Nancy Hill d/o Green Hill, II, Pioneer Methodist preacher."

This is in POVII as Line P (page 621) with Robert Peyton being the probable son of
Valentine Peyton and Frances Linton. Again, this line has no YDNA match to the
YDNA of our Payton/Humphries/Prichard descendants. See the AHH’s in the Patton
pedigree below. But, WHAT IF This Peyton line were from James Peyton and Susannah
Threlkeld instead! Susannah Threlkeld’s niece Elizabeth married (as second wife)
William Humphrey (1721 King George, Va) who married first Sarah Wood And their son
Aaron is in this census record!!! OR, what if James Payton was really from the P line.
See AHH’s again. Is it really just a coincidence that descendants of the Humphrey
(YDNA match from PA), Sherrill (on ped of our Prichard YDNA match) and Patton
(from the same areas of PA) are also in Schulyer County Illinois at the same time? And,
is it also just a coincidence that earlier the same Patton, Sherrill and Prichard lines were
in Burke County, NC at the same time as a James Humphries.
