Secure Wireless Data Transmission by Diffuse Infrared
TP 35936
Radio-based wireless local area network (WLAN) installations are growing in popularity as
enterprises seek to gain the productivity enhancements of an "untethered" workforce.
However, signals from radio-frequency-based WLANs (also known as "WiFi") leak from the
structure of an office or building, potentially offering security holes into the network. Nor is the
RF spectrum limitless; radio waves can interfere with, and receive interference from, other RFproducing equipment. Some environments are actively RF-hostile, such as factory floors and
similar installations.
The simple physics of the proposed novel technology for diffuse infrared signaling - that IR
waves cannot penetrate solid objects - eliminates most of the security issues in wireless data
transmissions. The signal is restricted to and contained within the four walls of a building or
office. Furthermore, diffuse IR generates no RF interference for other equipment, and is not
affected by other equipment that may generate RF interference.
Diffuse infrared is broadcast in all directions -- much like the light from a light bulb. It bounces
off walls, floors, and ceilings. Unlike the infrared built into PDAs and remote controls, diffuse IR
is available everywhere within a room or structure without concern for antenna direction.
Benefits Summary

Signal does not extend beyond the walls of an office or building, thus enhancing
network security.

Highly reliable and non-intrusive; the diffuse IR signal is not affected by RF-emitters and
will co-exist with RF-emitting devises -- even in RF-hostile environments (such as
factory floors).

Produces an omnidirectional signal like WiFi. Diffuse infrared does not require devices
to point in a specific direction.

Provides untethered connections within an office or building.

Supports industry-wide technology standards.
Development Summary
Several operational systems have been installed in high-profile locations such as stock
exchange offices, trade authorities; other systems have been evaluated for use on air force
and a space station, among other locations.

IP Summary
This technology is supported by 9 US patents, 2 Japanese patents and 2 European patents.
The most recent year of issue is 1999. Several un-numbered patents are pending in Europe,
Canada, Japan, and the US.
Technology Differentiation and Uniqueness
Wireless radio local area networking (WiFi) is omnidirectional from both the individual
computer user as well as from the system’s access points and routers, which allows for an
untethered workforce. WiFi range can be as much as a quarter mile. As a consequence,
access to the LAN easily can “leak” beyond the walls of an office or building. Despite signal
encryption, this potentially exposes the network to penetration from a position behind the
firewall and other security systems. WiFi signals can interfere with other RF-sensitive
equipment, and they can experience interference from other RF-generating equipment.
The diffuse IR of controlled infrared networks is likewise omnidirectional, so that the
untethered workforce can freely move around the interior of an office or building. But unlike
WiFi, infrared does not penetrate the walls, floor, and ceiling of a structure. Non-penetration
allows organizations the benefits of wireless LAN without the security issues of leaky RF
signals. Diffuse IR does not interfere with RF-sensitive equipment, and can operate even in
RF-hostile environments, such as on a factory floor.
Disperse infrared wireless products conform to the common industry standards IEEE 802.3
10BaseT, IEEE 802.3u 100BaseTx, and TCP/IP, and all will conform to 802.11 MAC (media
access control layer) standards.

Controller Registering Motions of Human Body by Simplified Model
ANVR TO_1938GC
A French company has developed and patented a controller that can register motions of
human bodies. The invented piece can be used as the basis for a wide array of unique novel
hardware and software applications: video games, sport training equipment, simulators,
communication, etc.
The company is after a license agreement or production agreement.

Edit/Print Technique for Easier and Faster Reading
ANVR PC-OD-VANCAU
A simple technique for representation of book texts or any other printed materials is suggested
by an inventor from France. The concept of the method is that every other text line is
“highlighted” in print by a shade of black ink or other colour inks, which makes it different to the
lines next to it. As a result, it improves readability of the text, as a reader does not skip to
wrong line. Therefore, reading gets faster. Pre-print editing of texts can be automated with
special software, to be developed yet.
The author would like to make the relevant license agreement with a printing works, publishing
house or a software developer.
Mobile Office, Innovative Software Option for Cell Phones, Personal Digital
Assistants and Notebooks
ANVR TO AL 310404
A French SME is an expert in integrated software applications for cellular communication. It
has developed MM-INSTANT: Instant Mobile Mail, a software product to provide access from a
user’s cell phone, when in the PUSH mode, to all the functions of a company’s corporate mail
server.
The company is looking for a product distributor, partners capable to apply the novelty in the
cellular communication field, or a cellular communication software integrator, for the marketing
purposes and sales of MM-INSTANT.
5-D Interactor - upper body and head movement sensor for control of a
computer
Ref: TO/B/14/27
A UK research centre has developed a low cost 5D head and torso movement sensor that is
not restricted to games. The 5DI finds application in any situation where the graphical display
of a 3D virtual world on a computer screen is involved. Futuristic examples include more
efficient navigation of hyperspace within the world wide web, and the efficient control of
operating systems that are based around multidimensional icons and spaces. The institution is
looking to license the technology.

Aerosol Crimp Depth & Diameter Gauge
Ref: TO/B/14/13
A small UK company has developed a gauge that checks the sizes of the valve crimp on
aerosol cans to BS (British Standard) and ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation)
standards. This is a critical check carried out by all aerosol-filling companies, where reliable
and accurate measurement is essential for the quality and safety of the product. The company
is looking to license the product.
Digital Signal Processing Algorithm
Ref: TO/B/14/28
A UK Research organisation has developed a technique that exploits the sparse structure and
a finite accuracy of the solution in order to reduce computation. The technique guarantees
convergence to the inverse matrix solution. Simulation results demonstrate both a low
computational load and fast convergence. Thus, the proposed adaptive technique can be
effectively implemented in hardware (as well as in real-time software) and find many
applications. The organisation is looking to license.
Innovative resource allocation software
Ref: TO/B/14/29
A UK Research Centre has developed software to assist with resource allocation
problems. The patented method devised eliminates symmetry providing an efficient and fast
solution to resource allocation in such situations. The organisation is looking to licence the
software.
Spectrum-Image Analysis Software (Hercules)
Ref: TO/B/14/30
A UK research organisation has developed a software product, (Hercules) which processes
and visualises 1, 2 or 3-dimensional data. The product should be of use to users of all kinds of
spectrum-image (SI) generating equipment, such as scanning Auger and other electron
microscopes, Fourier transform, time of flight and Infra Red spectroscopy and optical
microscopes. The organisation is looking to licence the software.
