XX. ERNEST DAVIS8 VANDERBURGH (Alexander7, Henry H.6, Henry5-4-3,
Dirck2, Lucas1), son of Alexander Vanderburgh and Sylvina Palmer Davis, was born on 8
Oct 18702 in Brooklyn, New York and spent his youthful years at Hastings-on-Hudson.
He attended Lawrenceville School for two years and Mount Hermon for three years. He
decided to become a medical missionary and entered New York University Medical
School from which he received a medical degree in 1894. He was an eye, ear, nose, and
throat specialist and also took post graduate courses in New York as well as in a London
Hospital for tropical diseases.
As Dr. Vanderburgh, he was appointed a missionary of the Board of Foreign
Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the US on 15 Feb 1894. On 3 May 1894, he
married ELEANOR VIOLETTA BEEMAN. Eleanor was born on 11 Jun 18713 at
Silvara, PA, the daughter of Amos P. Beeman and Matilda Montgomery.4 She graduated
from the State Normal School, New Britian, CT and taught in the public schools of
Carbondale, PA.
Ernest and Eleanor sailed for the Island of Hainan, China on 6 Sep 1894. After a
year there, they were transferred to the newly established Hunan Mission where they
carried on medical and evangelistic work for the Chinese in the Nodoa Station of the
Hunan Mission.
Dr. Vanderburgh's work began with the rudiments of teaching, building, and
healing. In Hainan, as he learned the language, he taught several students anatomy. He

also began building the Mary Henry Hospital, in Nodoa, which, when the missionaries
left in 1941, was still attending to the needs of the Hakkas, Limkos, Linko-Lois, and
Hainanese.
In 1900, Ernest, his wife and three children returned on furlough to the United
States and resided with his parents at the town of Greenburg, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
They subsequently returned to China in 1903. When the climate became
unfavorable to Mrs. Vanderburgh's health, the Doctor and his wife were transferred to the
Hunan Mission at Siangtan in Central China, where Dr. Vanderburgh began again the
study of the language, the teaching of students, and the building of a new hospital, the
Nathaniel Tooker Memorial. The hospital cost $250,000 and had a 100 beds. In this
hospital, he worked with Dr. Frederick J. Tooker, son of the man who donated the money
for the hospital. However, Dr. Tooker was obliged in 1917, because of health, to
relinquish his service on Siangtan. With the sound beginning of the medical work in
Siangtan, the service was extended to other areas of the city and adjacent territory.
Dispensaries were established, and under the skillful and kindly Christian treatment of
Dr. Vanderburgh and Chinese physicians who had some of their training under him, the
Hunanese learned to value Western medicine and the Christianity which had brought it to
them. In the turbulent years of 1926-27, Dr. Vanderburgh was at one time the only
foreign physician in the Hunan Province. Mrs. Vanderburgh wrote at that time: "We do
thank God that he can still carry on and that his staff is loyal and anxious for him to stay."
However, the Japanese invaded northern China in the late 1920s and Ernest and
his family were forced to leave. This, combined with the years in two pioneer fields had
taken their toll. When Dr. and Mrs. Vanderburgh returned to the United States from
Siangtan, China for furlough in 1928, ill health prevented their return to Hunan. Two
years prior to his retirement on 1 Dec 1930, Ernest and his wife lived in Asheville, NC
where he was a resident physician of the Asheville Farm School, later known as Warren
Wilson College. In later retirement years he gave such voluntary service as his health
would permit in the National Missions field at Swannannoa, North Carolina; but in 1938,
he was obliged to relinquish this service. He returned to his home state of New York for
the remainder of his retirement years. Ernest and Eleanor finally settled at Vintonton,
near West Fulton, NY where they had bought a farm during their second furlough home.
Ernest died at Gilbertsville, NY on 21 Apr 1945 and was buried in the Cobleskill, NY
Cemetery. His wife, Eleanor survived him. Children:

X. PETER8 VANDEBURGH (John P.7, Peter6, John5, Peter4, Henry3, Dirck2,
Lucas ), son of John P. Vandeburgh and Caroline ______, was born about 1838 in Ulster
Co. In 1855, he was living at home with his parents in Lexington, Greene Co., NY.
On 19 Oct 1859 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Prattsville, Greene County,
NY, he married JANE JANSEN. The Rev. William Johns performed the marriage
ceremony. At the time of the marriage, Peter's residence was Lexington, and Jane's
residence was "Shaendeacon." Jane was born about 1841.
Peter and Jane immediately settled in the village of Phoenicia, town of
Shandaken, Ulster County, NY. Here, in 1860, Peter worked as a farm laborer, but by
1862 decided to participate in the Civil War. He enrolled on 14 Aug 1862, and on 22
Aug he mustered in as a private in Company B, commanded by Capt. Simon S.
Westbrook. This company was attached to the 120th Regiment of New York State
Volunteers, commanded by Col. L. H. Sharp. Peter saw action in the area of Falmouth,
Virginia, where about 1 Jan 1863, he contracted typhoid fever. The disease took its toll,
and on 12 Jan 1863 in the Division Hospital near Falmouth, the sickness claimed Peter's
life.
Left in Shandaken as a widow with a young daughter, Jane subsequently married
Ezra P. Smith. The marriage took place on 26 Sep 1868 in the Reformed Dutch Church
of West Hurley, Ulster County, NY. The Rev. David K. Van Doren performed the
ceremony. On 29 Dec 1868, Ezra was legally made a guardian of Jane's daughter in a
Surrogate Court proceeding at Catskill in Greene County, NY.

XX. HERBERT LEWIS8 VANDERBURGH (Alonzo7, Lewis6, Henry5, James4,
Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of Alonzo Vanderburgh and Maria Berry, was born on 1
Dec 1860 at Stanfordville, Dutchess County, New York. After their mother died in 1862,
he and his sister, Ida, were reared by the Thomas Merriott family in Stanfordville, while
their father served in the Civil War. After their father returned from the war, the children
seemed so well established that Alonzo left them there, remarried, and lived elsewhere.
As Herbert grew up, he took on increased responsibilities for operation of the Merriott
farm. Family tradition says that Herbert was assured by the Merriotts that he would have
a life tenancy to the farm after they died.
On 1 Jan 1881 at the Quaker Monthly Meeting in Millbrook, NY, Herbert married
CORNELIA MAUDE HAAS. She was born on 14 Dec 1863, the only child of William
N. Haas and Harriet Sharp. Alonzo and his wife settled on the Merriott farm. However,
despite the previous assurances of the Merriotts, after they died, their daughter, Libby,
succeeded in contesting the will and evicted Herbert and his young family. Together
with his wife and infant daughter, Herbert went to live with his wife's grandmother,
Catharine Allendorf. Evidently, Herbert became disenchanted with his new living
conditions. In the early 1890s, he left his wife, Cornelia, and their three young daughters
and headed west. Cornelia and the girls remained in Bangall where Catharine Allendorf
cared for the children while Cornelia worked as a practical nurse. Later, Cornelia and her
daughters moved to Poughkeepsie, then to Yonkers, and finally to Rhinebeck, before
retiring to Florida.
Not much was heard from Herbert over the years. His daughter, Ditty, kept in
touch with him and evidently convinced him to return east to Rhinebeck in 1927. His
son-in-law, Herman, found work for him as a construction project watchman, and Herbert
tried to reconcile himself with his family. Unfortunately the reconciliation failed and

coupled with his poor health and cold weather, Herbert returned to Southern California
where he worked as a gardener. Herbert died of cancer on 23 Jan 1935. He was
cremated and the remains sent east to be buried in the family plot in St. Paul's Cemetery
at Red Hook, NY. Children:

XXX. ABRAHAM LINCOLN8 DONALDSON (Melissa [Vanderburgh] 7,
Lewis , Henry5, James4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of Melissa Vanderburgh and Isaac
T. Donaldson, was born on 27 Apr 1861 at Hyde Park, NY. Shortly after he was born, he
went to live for a time with his aunt, Clemma (Donaldson) Hammond in Hyde Park,
because his mother had died in 1862. In 1884, Abraham married, first, STELLA
MARITA KELLEY, born about 1866, the daughter of William W. Kelley and Anna J.
Horton of Lagrangeville, NY. Abraham and Stella lived in Verbank, NY from around
1886 to 1898, where Abraham learned his blacksmith trade.
Abraham was living in Verbank when the blizzard of Dec 1888 struck New York
State. The day before the blizzard struck, Abraham drove his team of horses to Pleasant
Valley to visit his ailing father. While there, the snow began to fall very hard. Wishing
to return home to his wife and month old daughter, Abraham set out on foot for Verbank.
The weather was too severe to use the team of horses. He headed for Verbank using
fence posts and stonewalls to guide his way. In the course of wending his way through
the storm, he ultimately found himself at the train station in Moores Mills or Billings.
After spending the night in the train station, he joined other railroad men the next
morning and helped them shovel snow off the railroad tracks all the way to Verbank.
The snow in Verbank had become so deep that Abraham's wife, Stella, sheltered their
chickens in the cellar of the house. The outside well had become so clogged with snow
that the bucket could not be lowered into it. She resorted to melting snow for their source
of water.
Around 1898, Abraham and his family moved to Lagrangeville. Here, Abraham
became an established blacksmith. Around 1905, they moved again, this time to Pleasant
Valley. There, they lived in several different houses on Route 44. One the lasting
achievements of Abraham’s blacksmith trade can be found in the Quaker Cemetery at
Crum Elbow, Hyde Park, NY. When the tombstone of Abe’s grandfather, David
Donaldson, broke, Abe repaired it by heating an iron bar and clamping the stone back
together. He also did the same thing for a near by “Baker” memorial. Both stones are
still standing today.
Abraham's granddaughter recalled that he was allergic to ether. He found this out
when visiting a dentist for a tooth extraction in Fishkill. The ether administered by the
dentist caused Abraham to become uncontrollable and "go crazy." As a result, the dentist

could not extract the tooth. So, Abraham returned home, cut away his own gum, and
pulled the tooth out himself. Later in his life, Abraham required removal of his vericose
veins. Since he was still allergic to ether, the surgery was performed without it. The
operation took place on his own dining room table at home in Pleasant Valley.
Abraham was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pleasant Valley. Stella
died on 22 Jan 1929. Abraham then married on 17 Aug 1935 EUGENIA (HUNTABO)
CAREY, a widow from New York City. On the same day that Abraham married
Eugenia, Jack Cavo married Lois Masten. Lois recalled the following anecdote: After
Jack and Lois returned from their honeymoon, the townsfolk gave them a "skimelton".
They put Jack and Lois on the front seat of abuckboard wagon and headed for the other
bride and groom. The bride was all smiles and ready to go, but Abe, in spite of blowing
of horns and banging of pots and pans, wouldn't come out. So, the men went in and
found Abe under a mattress in the attic. He consented to go, providing he didn't have to
ride in the buckboard. The entourage, with Jack and Lois in the buckboard and Abe and
his bride behind them in the rumble seat of a car, drove all over the valley and had a
wonderful time.
Abraham died on 13 May 1941. He and Stella are buried in the Presbyterian
Cemetery at Pleasant Valley. All children were by Stella Kelley:

NY. If this is true, then there is a contradiction between what in recorded in the 1900
census for Kingston and the 1900 census for Buffalo.
According to the 1900 census for Buffalo, Charles was born in Mar 1869 (which
agrees with the previous mentioned 1880 census) and married about 1893 FRANCES
KELLY who was born in New York in Mar 1870. In 1900 they lived at 861 Michigan
St. in Buffalo, NY where Charles was employed as a printer. Residing with them that
year was Charles' widowed mother-in-law, Cecelia Kelly, who was born in Ireland in
May 1838, and who immigrated to the United States in 1860. Also living with them was
Charles' sister-in-law and Cecelia Kelly's widowed daughter, Margareth Shever, who was

George may have had a first marriage to SADIE LEROY by whom he had at
least two children.82 However, if this is true, then the 1900 census is in error when it says
that he was single and living at home with his parents. Children:83
