Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Services
Permanent Full-Time
Under the general supervision of the staff pharmacists, the technician will be working in both the hospital
pharmacy and the outpatient pharmacy (The PharmaCentre). In the PharmaCentre, the duties include
outpatient prescription dispensing, compounding, inventory control and purchasing. In the hospital
pharmacy, the duties include unit dose packaging, ward stock distribution, and aseptic manufacturing.
Summary of Duties:
 Dispense outpatient prescription using the Kroll computer system;
 Prepare sterile and non-sterile extemporaneous compounds;
 Purchase, receive and issue inventory in both departments;
 Monitor inter-departmental transfers of medications between areas;
 Operate POS machine, credit card machine, and computer;
 File prescription hard copies;
 Replenish dispensary stock (vials, bags, etc.);
 Third party billings and reconciliation;
 Daily sales reports and statistics;
 Apply for credit of expired products where appropriate;
 Manual prescription cancellations;
 Photocopy as required;
 Perform second check on pharmacist’s or technician’s work as required;
 Maintain a clean work area, front shop and dispensary.
Clinical Duties:
 Answer questions from hospital staff, patients when appropriate (refers to pharmacist when necessary);
 Attends staff meetings.
Educational Duties:
 Teaches and instructs pharmacy students and interns on the role of the technician;
 Orients new staff members to the pharmacy;
 Attend CE seminars on topics of interest to the practice.
Quality Assurance:
 Check all labels, prescription, compounding, etc;
 Perform periodic expiry date checks on all drugs in stock;
 Check expiry dates on all products ready for dispensing.

Qualifications/Skills:
 Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with The Ontario College of Pharmacists.
 Knowledge or previous experience with the following equipment in addition to the Kroll Computer System:
Credit Card authorization machine, Digital scale, Unit Packaging Machine, Laminar Flow Hood,
Biohazard cabinet, and Unguator
 Experience in both hospital and retail pharmacies and the use of the Kroll Computer System are strongly
desired.
 Good organizational and time management skills required.
 Good verbal and written communication skills required.
 Ability to work effectively under pressure, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines required.
 Experience with sterile compounding, unit dose distribution, and knowledge of automatic dispensing is
required.
 Knowledge and ability to operate computer program applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook is
required. Experience with Computerized Inventory Management programs is an asset.
 Excellent attendance required
