Glass Expansion catalogue represents the widest range of sample introduction components for ICP
emission and mass spectrometers. Today, Glass Expansion support both new and old instruments
for 13 different manufacturers, representing sample introduction systems for over 50 different ICPOES and ICP-MS models. The combination of listening to customers and innovative thinking has
seen Glass Expansion successfully overcome many of the commonly encountered application
issues even with the toughest samples. Innovative new designs include the high sensitivity

quality of our designs. One can have the best methods of production and the highest quality finish, but if the

1. Did you know that Glass Expansion was the first company to introduce the 'Tracey' cyclonic spray chamber,
which has since revolutionized the design and manufacture of cyclonic style spray chambers? That's right,
before the advent of the cyclonic spray chambers, Scott style spray chambers were the norm. The design of
our cyclonic spray chambers helped analysts to achieve sensitivity gains, reduced washout times and matrix
effects that were not possible before.
2. Our fully demountable torches, with all components being removable and replaceable, are also an industry
first. They've helped to make operating and using torches more efficient and cost effective. A great feature of
this torch is that any of the 3 individual tubes can be replaced whilst maintaining accurate alignment and
concentricity. All replacement components are so precisely manufactured that no further optimization is
required once a tube has been replaced. Changing torch tubes is so quick and easy, reducing down time and
increasing instrument productivity.
3. How many other nebulizer manufacturers do you know who manufacture nebulizers to operate optimally at
the gas pressures and flows specified by the ICP instrument manufacturer? Instead of manufacturing
nebulizers which operate within a certain gas pressure and flow range, we go the extra distance in our strive

Reproducibility of analytical results in ICP analyses is of paramount importance. In an environment where a
small change or inconsistency in a product or variable can result in a dramatic change in analytical results,

QUALITY BY DESIGN
Uniformity is paramount
Using advanced manufacturing technology and the most stringent quality control systems, the Glass
Expansion range of nebulizers, spray chambers and torches have set new standards answering the analytical
needs for long-term performance and reliability covering a diverse range of ICP and ICP-MS applications.
Pneumatic nebulizers that are used for liquid samples, by far the most common type, produce a spray of liquid
particles with a wide range of sizes - a 'polydisperse' spray. The size distribution of this spray is governed
intimately by the geometry of the region of gas-sample interaction. If this region deviates from its intended
annular or circular shape, whether by manufacturing variability, mechanical resonances, surface modifications
such as erosion or by dimensional changes with age processes, the size distribution of the spray will alter and
with it the ICP analytical results. Glass Expansion's designers have made a direct attack on the 'Achilles-Heel'
problem of sample introduction (1) by devising components generally - and nebulizers in particular - that
follow the first law of manufacturing - that everything produced should always be exactly the same. Systematic
control at every stage of our production process guarantees that you always get the same high quality
product.
For nebulizers, this requires designs with high mechanical strength, micron-level dimensional accuracy of
orifices and surface finishes that are repeatable. For concentric glass nebulizers in particular, this means that
heat treatments of the glass have been kept to a minimum and that the central capillaries are shaped at low
temperatures. This unique approach by Glass Expansion's designers result in nebulizers that:
1. Give the same analytical results, to within a standard deviation of 1%, for a statistically significant test batch
of nebulizers and where the test instrument drift can be shown to be negligible within the same test period,
and
2. Enable ICP's to achieve 'Rank-5' short term and long term background RSD's, by tests outlined by Mermet
and Poussel in their 1995 review of ICP figures of Merit (2) These 'Rank-5' figures represent best ICP
performance figures that are being achieved in the market place of the new century. When Glass Expansion
nebulizers are used, RSD values of 0.5% or higher are indicative of instabilities from other sources - whether
they be badly adjusted sample pumps, torch RF power instability or simply the photon noise of light-limited
spectrometers.

The SeaSpray concentric nebulizer offers outstanding nebulization efficiency for trace level analyses. It offers freedom
from clogging while nebulizing solutions to the limit of solubility of most mineral salts, and conferring significant sensitivity
gains.

The Slurry glass concentric nebulizer is ideal for specialised applications requiring the aspiration of slurries or
suspensions. It's capillary bore is 50% larger than standard concentrics which reduces the possibility of particle blockage,
while giving excellent signal stability.

Quartz VeeSpray - handles high particle and TDS loads best
This VeeSpray nebulizer is made from quartz. It provides reproducible performance when working with samples
containing large particulates. It has the same 6mm diameter as the standard concentric nebulizer.
 Material: Quartz
 High physical reproducibility ~ 1%
 TDS tolerance, typically up to 30%
 High tolerance to particulates, typically up to 300um
 Must be pumped - does not self aspirate
 Design uptake range: 0.6 - 3ml/min. Operates best between 1.5 - 2.5ml/min

The EzyFit Connector
Glass Expansion developed the EzyFit connector to offer a no-fuss method of connecting sample uptake tubes to
nebulizer. EzyFit connectors are simple to use, reduce washout times, and eliminate dead volume. The connector is
supplied in packs of 10 and comes with sample tubes of 3 commonly required internal diameters:
EZT-025 EzyFit Connector 0.25mm ID x 1.3mm OD x 700mm long
EZT-050 EzyFit Connector 0.50mm ID x 1.3mm OD x 700mm long
EZT-075 EzyFit Connector 0.75mm ID x 1.3mm OD x 700mm long
EzyFit connectors are made to be used only with Glass Expansion glass concentric nebulizers that have the letter 'F' in
their designation (eg. AR30-07-FSS2E), because these nebulizers are made with a sample inlet tube that hNebulizers
such as the AR30-1-C1E Conikal, the AR30-1-S6E Slurry nebulizer and the AR30-1-SS2E SeaSpray would therefore not
be compatible with EzyFit connectors. The user would be required to make his/her own sample tube connection for use
with these 'standard connection' nebulizers. as a very precise bore.
Notes on Nebulizer Uptake
When a Glass Expansion nebulizer is designed for a specified uptake by aspiration, the nebulizer's best short-term
stability will always be obtained at an uptake close to that 'design aspiration level'. Thus for a 'PFA04' OpalMist or an
'FM04' MicroMist, they will be best used at an uptake between ~0.3ml/min and ~0.6ml/min. The reasons for this are found
in the fundamental properties of liquid dispersion from narrow capillaries under the action of turbulent gas jets.
Another point to note is that it would also be difficult to 'force' a nebulizer to a higher uptake by pumping, since pump
pressures required would rapidly rise to very high levels. Thus while an AR30-1-CV6 'VeeSpray' nebulizer could be
pumped to an uptake of 6ml/min, it would be impractical to try the same pumped uptake rate with an AR30-1-FM02
'MicroMist'...indeed, it might burst the pump tube connections. The laws governing liquid flows indicate that there is a 4th
power relationship between applied pressure and the diameter of a tube through which a liquid is pumped by that
pressure.
Unfortunately in one way, there is a law of diminishing returns (for sensitivity) that applies as the uptake of a nebulizer is
increased: this means that uptake (and of course pressure in the pumped sample tubes) can often be lowered without
losing much sensitivity - particularly if the volume of the spray chamber is small. Such an uptake reduction can be made
by simply reducing the internal diameter (ID) of peristaltic pump tube. Reducing the ID by a factor of 2 will reduce the
uptake by a factor of 4, and thus the pressure in the tube by more than 10, if the pump roller speed is unchanged

Constant argon supply and RF power are the two most important requirements for good ICP short term
stability. For example, a half-percent leak of argon can generate RSD's of worse than 2%. The most common
cause of argon leaks at nebulizer ports is a stiffening of the argon supply tube over time, leading to a
consequent loss of seal.
The EzyLok connection is made with our specilally formed nebulizer side arm, which allows it to be pushed
and locked securely into the popular 'One Touch Fitting' which incorporates a flexible o'ring seal. To
disconnect the nebulizer, simply push on the release button located at the top of the fitting.
The EzyLok connection also improves safety by preventing broken nebulizer side arms. When argon supply
tubes made from all or part silicon are used, they tend to bond strongly to the nebulizer glass side arm.
Usually ICP users remove the bonded tubing by cutting it away bit by bit with a sharpe blade...a very
hazardous operation! The EzyLok easily connects and disconnects the argon supply tube to the nebulizer side
arm.

THE ROLE OF THE RF COILS
The RF coil is the last component in the electrical system used to generate an Argon plasma. Being the last
component, there is great importance placed on the coil for transferring RF energy to the plasma.
There are three factors affecting the role of the RF Coil in transferring energy:



Concentricity and alignment - these are very important in producing a correctly shaped plasma, which
consistently needs to be located in the same position. The Glass Expansion RF Coil installation tools
with plastic coil supports make this possible every time.
Correct dimensions - being part of the RF system, the coil dimensions are also important in the tuning
of the circuit. Slight changes in dimensions can produce small changes in resistance or inductance
and are normally compensated for in the tuning circuitry of the system.
Base metal/plating - the most efficient conductor of RF energy is pure silver followed by annealed
copper. There is very little difference in the conductivity of these materials but there is a great deal of
difference in cost. Copper is used as the base material of all commercially available coils but different
manufactures use different plating materials. Silver has the best conductance and gold the best
corrosion resistance.
Being exposed to the environment of the torch box, the condition of the coil has a major effect on the
efficiency of transferring energy to the plasma. The greater the corrosion, the larger the electrical energy that
is required to produce a plasma of the same power. This transfers undue stress on the rest of the electrical
components used in the RF system, possibly contributing to premature failure.
There are three main areas that affect the transfer of energy from the plasma to the sample.

Argon gas flow rates and quality.
The torch containing the plasma. The torch needs to be concentric and of the highest quality Quartz.
If the outer tube becomes devitrified, the transfer of energy is restricted due to losses incurred by
heating on the surface of the outer tube, thereby reducing the available energy for the atoms.
The RF generating system, including the coil. All RF systems available in commercial ICP instruments
are capable of supplying the required power. The one component that is common to all instruments is
the coil. Each instrument has a different type of coil, with different dimensions and different number of
turns.
RF coils are one of a number of critical components needed to produce a plasma. With the Glass Expansion
RF coils and installation tools it is now possible to replace your coil on a more regular basis without the cost of
a service visit. This ensures this part of the RF system continues to work in peak condition.

BENEFITS OF M AINTAINING YOUR RF COILS
The main problem with an RF coil is corrosion, whether from heat or chemical oxidation. Corrosion reduces
the efficiency of energy transfer to the plasma increasing the stress applied to other components in the RF
generating system. In particular, the RF Power Tube or RF amplifying FET's
have to generate more power to deliver the same amount of energy to the
plasma.
Coils are the transmitters of this
RF energy. The efficiency of
different materials in conducting
RF energy plays an important role
in the overall plasma efficiency.
Metal oxides do not conduct RF
as well as pure metal. In particular
copper sulphate is a very poor
conductor, whereas silver oxide
has a much smaller effect on
efficiency. The most RF efficient
metals are pure silver IAC (International Annealed Copper Standard) 105,
annealed copper IAC 100, and gold IAC 74.
If heat is the biggest problem then the best way to deal with this is to use a coil that is plated in a highly
reflective material such as silver. Silver plating however does produce a tarnish appearance after a period of
use. To obtain the best life out of a coil in this situation, the coil should be cleaned frequently with a tarnish
remover. This will eventually lead to the removal of the silver plating. However, if the tarnish is not removed,
excessive heat can build up due to higher absorption and lead to the plating flaking away from the copper
tubing. This exposes bare copper areas that will deteriorate at a faster rate. Copper will oxidise much quicker,
thereby leading to possible arcing between coils, and lower energy transfer to the plasma.
Chemical corrosion is best dealt with using a gold-plated coil. The plating process is critical in the
performance of the coil. Gold plating can produce porous coatings, which allow a chemical attack on the
copper tubing, thereby rendering the plating useless. The plating process used in the production of the Glass
Expansion gold plated coils is designed to remove the porous effect yet still maintain the high purity plating. In
time, the gold plating will show signs of copper sulphate formation on the surface. This occurs due to copper
migration through the plating. For best performance these deposits should be removed using an abrasive
metal polish that is free of acid. Unfortunately once this starts to occur the migration will occur at a faster rate
and the coil should be replaced.
Periodic cleaning of your coil will extend the lifetime and produce a more consistent plasma. This in turn will
lead to better analytical results. It will also reduce stress on the RF generator.

ADVANT AGE OF GLASS EXPANSION RF COILS
Introduction
Glass Expansion Coils are produced from the highest quality raw materials and plated using prescribed
methods to obtain maximum RF (Radio Frequency) transmission efficiency. There are numerous papers
published on RF transmission with regard to conductor and coating resistance.
Plasma Generation
The generation of a plasma is the result of complex RF circuit design. Many of the environmental problems
that affect the coil have little effect on the operation of the RF generator, except that corrosion produces an
added load. In particular, corrosion of the coil has a significant effect on the performance and robustness of
the plasma. Changing to a new coil reduces the load on the RF generator, since the current required to
produce the same level of power is reduced as the resistance of the coil is reduced. Hence, having a coil with
little or no corrosion has a positive effect on the longevity of the PA (Power Amplifier) Tube or RF FET's (Field
Effect Transistor) due to the lower current required.
Conductivity
This can be explained by the conductivity of pure metals and oxides. Pure grade copper has an IACS
(International Annealed Copper Standard) of 100, silver has an IACS of 105, and Gold has an IACS of 74. In
referencing the ICAS system a higher IACS indicates higher conductivity. The following websites contain

The formation of an oxide on the surface of the coil reduces the conductivity of the coil and hence it's
performance. Depending on the instrument and the control feedback system, this can be seen by a reduction
in the intensity for an element of the same concentration over the life of the coil.
Corrosion Resistance
From a conductivity point, the best material to make a coil from would be pure silver but, due to the high cost
this is impractical. Copper is the next best material, but the copper must be of an acceptable grade and
contain a minimum of contaminants. The copper used by Glass Expansion has a purity of 99.9% minimum.
Once the base material is fixed, the environmental conditions under which the coil is placed need to be
considered. The environmental conditions in the torch box include corrosive gases and high temperatures.
These vary with instruments and plasma orientation (Radial or Axial). This leads to the use of plating of the
copper coils to help prevent unwanted corrosion, with the two most common materials being Silver and Gold.
The plating process is vital to the conductivity of the coil. There are many different types of plating procedures
that result in varying degrees of conductivity. The procedure used by Glass Expansion does not use additive
brighteners or corrosion inhibitors in the plating bath. This produces a dull coating, which is then manually
polished to give a final bright appearance, resulting in a coil that retains the highest possible IACS rating.
Coils should be continually cleaned to remove the build up of surface oxidation. The rate of corrosion is higher
for Copper, followed by Silver, then Gold. There are however, distinct advantages to using Silver. The plating
process for Silver leaves a more even surface allowing fewer sites for chemical attack. The conductivity of
Silver is much higher than that of Gold, but Gold does offer a greater protection in more aggressive
environments.

Glass Expansion recommends coils in Silver and Gold due to better conductivity and corrosion resistance.
 There are fewer problems with a silver-plated coil with arcing between windings, compared to the
standard copper coil. This in turn lengthens the life of the coil.
 Another advantage is our installation guide and alignment tools. These allow Do-It-Yourself
installations, saving the expense of a service engineer. These installation guides written on Compact
Discs, will show how to set up and align your torch and coil to the exact specifications. This reduces
torch wear due to misaligned coils, especially in axial systems.
 All coils produced by Glass Expansion will be shipped with a coil former. This former holds the coil in
the correct dimensions during shipping and installation. The tool can also be used to check the
dimensions from time to time, or to reset after an accidental knock.
 The packaging of Glass Expansion's coils will ensure that the coil arrives at the customer's site, in the
correct dimensions.
