ANTHROPOLOGY MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
The major in anthropology (42 units) is designed to provide a students with a broad base in
archaeology, cultural, and physical anthropology. It also provides flexibility that allows you to choose
the courses that fit your personal and professional interests. Faculty advisors are always glad to
answer your questions about the major and how it prepares you for the future.
Core Requirements (15 units)
All anthropology majors take ANTH 011 Cultural Anthropology, ANTH 012 Human
Evolution, ANTH 013 Archaeology, ANTH 131 Theories of Culture, and ANTH 191
Frontiers of Anthropology (senior seminar)
Research Methods (3 units)
Choose a course that develops research skills in cultural anthropology (ANTH 149
Ethnographic Methods), physical anthropology (ANTH155 Human Osteology), or
archaeology (ANTH 167 Archaeological Laboratory Methods, ANTH 168
Archaeological Methods, and ANTH 169 Archaeological Fieldwork).
Cultural Anthropology (6 units)
Choose two courses from: ANTH 105 Applied Anthropology, ANTH 108 Medical

Major Electives (6 units)
Take two additional upper-division anthropology courses. Your major electives can be
split between the fields of cultural anthropology, archaeology, and physical
anthropology, or you may take both in any one of the fields. The faculty advisors can
help you make the decision that is best for you. One SJSU Studies course may be
counted as a major elective.
Please note that ANTH 180 Individual Studies, ANTH 184 Directed Reading, ANTH 187
Special Topics, and ANTH 195 Practicum may fulfill a cultural anthropology, archaelogy, or
physical anthropology requirement with advisor approval.

SOCS/SOCI 15 Statistical Applications in the Social Sciences, SOCI 102 Introduction to
Statistics, STAT 95 Elementary Statistics, or GEOG 101 Global Geography.
