About India’s Mining Sector

India is endowed with large mineral resources, producing 86 types of minerals with over 2000 mines across India. The public sector accounts for 66.51% of the total value of mineral production; however, most of these resources are under– explored and require state-of-the-art technologies. Ontario has the knowledge and assets to advance the Indian industry to help meet the demand of the high manufacturing growth rate.

Minerals

By product class, coal accounts for 50% of Indian mining sector, followed by iron ore (22%) and limestone (20%)

Platinum group of elements (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, Os & Ru) have witnessed sudden increase in demand in recent years.

• Large deposits of chromium, limestone, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and titaniferous magnetite.

• India rates amongst the top 10 producers in the world for mica; barite, chromium, talc, bauxite, coal, iron ore, Kyanite, manganese ore, steel, zinc, and aluminum.

• Increasing focus now and in the future on gold, lead/zinc, copper and diamond.

Mine Composition

• Approx. 87% of the operations can be considered as small scale mining operations.

• There are approx. 2000 reporting mines in the non-coal sector in India, 113 of these are underground mines

• The underground mines are presently confined to base metals, manganese ore, gold, chromate and some non-metallic minerals like soapstone, mica etc.

• The open-cast mines produce major minerals like lignite, iron ore and limestone.
