Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy (SM) Research Associate - Job No. 583
The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is Canada’s national synchrotron research facility located on
the campus of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. CLSI is now accepting applications for a
Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy (SM) Research Associate in the Experimental Facilities Division This is a
two year term position.
The SM Beamline: provides 130 – 2500 eV photons in a high brightness, high flux, medium resolution
and small spot size beam. The beamline consists of an advanced elliptically polarized undulator (EPU)
source, a novel entrance slit-less plane grating monochromator (PGM) which feeds two branch lines, one
optimized for scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), the other for X-ray photoemission
electron microscopy (xPEEM). A description of the SM beamline, with some examples of the science it

Responsibilities: Reporting to the SM Staff Scientist, the successful applicant will, in cooperation with
the SM beam team led by Prof. Adam Hitchcock of McMaster University, assist in the maintenance,
periodic upgrades and operation of the scanning transmission X-ray microscope, one of the two SM
Beamline end stations. Providing STXM user support is a key component of this position. The applicant
will be encouraged to develop her/his own research in their area of interest or in collaboration with
members of the CLS spectromicroscopy beam team, on biological, environmental or polymeric samples
using the CLS-STXM
Qualifications: All applicants are expected to have successfully completed a Ph.D degree in Physics,
Chemistry, Engineering or related scientific discipline. Applicants with a strong M.Sc. and relevant
capabilities will also be considered. Experience developing or operating a synchrotron beamline is not a
requirement, but experience in advanced instrumentation development, operation and maintenance will be
a definite plus, as would be experience in analytical microscopy. The applicant should have a clear
aptitude for science and instrumentation and a desire to participate in an active and exciting science
program. Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
Remuneration: This position is classified as a Level 3 in the Scientific & Research Job Family as per the
CLSI Out-of-Scope Salary Grid with a salary range of $48,000 to $72,000 per annum. A comprehensive
benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, and 4 weeks annual vacation is
part of a competitive compensation package.
