(from October Sky, Part II)
Directions: Read this paragraph. Underline the subjects and main verbs in each
sentence.
(1) Homer's father had some strong feelings about the mine. (2) He
was strict about following rules. (3) One time, Mr. Bykovski broke a rule;
he was helping Homer weld a rocket. (4) Homer’s father was angry with
Homer, and (5) he transferred Mr. Bykovski from the machine shop to the
mine. (6) Homer’s father and the other miners were very proud of the coal
mine. (7) Coal was important to the United States. (8) Coal provided
power for the country, and (9) many businesses depended on the mine.
(10) Mr. Hickam wanted Homer to become a coal miner.
